The landing of the Amerlcnn troopi at Snu Fabian last Tuesday was tho most Bpectacular af fair of tho kind since Oonoral Shatter's disembarkation at Daiquiri. The co rporation of the troops and the navy was complete. The gunboats mado a terrible bombardment tor an hour, while the troops rushed, waist deep, throuEh tho surf, under a heavy, but badly aimed, rifle fire from tho Insur gent trenches, and charged right and left, pouring volley after volley at tho fleeing rohols. Forty Filipinos wore captured, mostly non-commissioned of ficers. Several lnsurnont dead anu flvo wounded were found in a building which had suffered considerably from t the bombardment. Tho town was well fortified. Thu sand dunes were riveted with bamboo 20 foot thick, which uf lorded a lino cover. When the transports arrived In the gulf they found tho gunboats Prlnco ton, Bennington and othors waiting. After consultation with Goneral Whea- ton Commander Knox, of the Prince ton, and Commander Sheridan, of tho Donnington, anchored on the shallow two miles on shore. The gunboats formed a line Inside, tho Helena, Callao and Manila close In shore. With the first gun of tho bombardment the small boats were filled rapidly, without con fusion, by Major Cronlte s battalion of the Twenty-third Infantry and Cap tain Buck's battalion of the Thirteenth Infantry. While tho lines of boats moved shoreward the gunboats poured the full force of their batteries into the trenches, soon forcing the Insurgents to flee through the burrows dug back of the trenches. About 200 men held their places until the keels of tho boats grated on tho shore, wnen tneir Mau ser bullets began to sing overhead. The battalions formed in gooa oraer. Captain Buck, with Pierce's and Pat- ton's companies, pursueu uio msui gents on the left Into tho bamboo thickets. On tho right was a frail foot bridge across the river, leading to the towns. Oeneral Wheaton, per sonally commanding, ordered a charge across the bridge, ana captain tiow land, of his staff, led Coleman's and Elliott's companies or tne inirteenin and Shields' company of the Twenty third, who behaved splendidly under their first lire. Into tho town, which was found to be nearly deserted, ex cept by the aged and some Spaniards vho had hidden in tho buffalo wal lows, and who came shouting delight edly toward the Americans. Twenty eight Spanish prisoners wero also res cued, Two companies of the Thirty-third bad a skirmish along the Dagupan road with the retreating Filipinos. The troops camped In the rain dur ing the night, and In the morning General Wheaton established his head quarters in a church, quartered his men In the houses and sent tne cap tured Filipinos beyond tho outposts, with orders not to return. The inhabitants describe all the roads as practically impassable, and say they believe Agulnaldo has se creted a yacht In the river Longapo, near Subig, for use in his flight when he finds his capture is inevitable. Wednesday was devoted to recon naissances. Major Logan went north ward to Santo Tomas and burned the Filipino barracks. Captain Buck's Thirteenth went to San Jacinto and disposed of small bands. Marsh's Twenty-third went toward Magdalen, on the Dagupan road, and had several sharp fights with small parties. They killed eight men, brought in 20 pris oners and had five men wounded. The British public must per force bo content with the brief, stureo typed report which the censor allows tu filter through from Capo Town. That this condition of things Is no longer due to pressure of work or de fective cabins has beon amply proven, tho Eastern Telegraph compan) reckons that the real delay in trans mission is about two days. It Is evl dont, thorefoie, that the censorship Is responsible for the othsr two days of delay which sewns to befall all the dispatches. Moreover, The Dally Telegraph an nounces that Its "appropriated" dis patch from Ladysmlth, dated Mon day, which the war office published on Tuesday, wbb not delivered In Ktset street until yesterday morning. It Is believed that the war office received further dispatches last evening, but nothing has been published. At a banquet in the city of London jesterday the Duke of Cambridge, sponking of the war, said: "We ought never to havo allowed ourselves to bo in the position In which the outbreak of war found us. It is said that General Duller uever wpected to commence the campaign before Christmas, and it now looks as though this will be the case. Cer tainly no artillery can reach Durban before Nov. 14, and without additional guns an advance from Estcourt would bo Impossible. No doubt, as Lord Salisbury said In a recent Bpeech, England will "muddle through It." and et another Illustration of muddling has become apparent in tho fact that gunnery Instructors have only Just ar rived at Woolwich arsenal for Instruc tion In siege train duties. Although hurried preparations are being made to prepare tho siego trains, the fact that the men aro at Devonport and the guns at Woolwich seems to show that the Idea of tho slego train was quite an after thought. Tho statement from Ladysmlth that the British guns do not reply to tho Boer artillery because tho concrete beds for the guns have not yot har dened Is Interpreted In some quarters to mean simply that tho British aro husbanding their ammunition, as th Boer Ore is only a trick to get tho British to waste shells.
