Dandwood. S. D.. Oct, 23. Evidences of tho richness of the Philippine Isl ands In the precious metals have been shown In tho Black Hills towns since the return of tho three volunteer com panies which served a year In the Isl ands. The Black Hills boys, many ot them, have had practical exporlenco In mining for gold and sllvor ores, and they have been watchful of the Philip pines for Indications of ore doposlts. Captain Paul McClelland, of Company I, has brought back from Manila a piece of bamboo, corked at each end, which contains a very rich piece of decomposed sllvor ore. Captain McClelland formed the ac quaintance of an old native, who said tho rich specimen In tho bamboo stick came from a wide ledge, stepping off a distance of nbout 100 feet when he told the captain the width of It. The sam ple of ore Is nearly half silver. The ledso, the natlvo stated. Is about ten miles from Manila, Many of tho na tives have learned something of the valuo of tho ore veins of the country, having seen Bomo of the mining done by the Spanish. Pleco3 of rich gold quartz ore have been given tho Black Hills boys by the natives, which came from Luzon, and the ore resembles very closely tho rich free milling veins of the Black Hills. Chunks of gold ore have been exhibited on the streets of Deadwood by some of the returned sol diers, which bristled with gold threads, flakes of nuggets, and it would be taken for Black Hills ore by tho most ex perienced mining men. Many of tho Black Hills boys have remained in the Philippines for the purpose of being on tho ground ready for the gold fields lis soon as order Is restored In the Islands. Sev eral outfits have been organized which are already In the gold fields around Manila. Some of tho returning sol diers have small bottles of placer gold which they panned out of tho creeks and larger streams of water with com mon pans. Thero seem to be large quantities of black sand, which Is full of bright yellow gold, easily panned and believed by tho Black Hills men to be of great quantities. Glorious News. Comes from Dr D. H. Sir Thomas Llpton spent yostertlay on board hi steam yacht Krln. During thtt grtt er portion of the morning he was busy with his secretaries, but In the after noon he took a rest. He saw a few visitors, although hundreds of small boats floated around the big yacht. Some of the most venturesome went up to the gangway and sent cards on board. The owner ot the unsuccessful cup huntor talked freely to a reporter, and chatted tor more than an hour about his plans for the future. I shall not challenge for tho cup next year," he said In roply to a query. "You see, the time is nil too short to doslgn a boat, build her and have her tuned up to the concort pitch to race next fall. I shall, however, issue a challenge for 1901, and shall complete the arrangements for It in m day or two. The matter must be dis cussed fully with the committee of tho New York Yacht club. I havo accept ed Commodore Morgan's Invitation to dine tomorrow night nt the Metropoli tan duo. I oxpect to meet Mr. Iselln and the members of the committee there, and we shall doubtless talk tho matter over then. Will Fife design tho boat? Most assuredly ho will, but in his present Btnte I do not caro to approach him on the subject. There will be plenty of time for that, however, after the chal lenge is Issued. My now boat must bo between 15 and 20 minutes faster than the Shamrock, and she must bo an im provement on the Columbia,' which means nlmost a miracle, for she Is a marvelous boat. If any other yachtsman wants to challenge for tho cup I shall willingly step aside, but In a'ny event I shall stand willing to give every assistance in my power to the man who tries to lift the cup. ino Shamrock and my crew will be at his disposal, so that he can have a trial horse whoso powers are known. If my challenge is the one accepted 1 shall havo the Shamrock in commission, and will use her in tun ing up the new boat." Sir Thomas commented on the pro posed trip of the Columbia abroad, saying. "If she were my boat I should take her across at once, and you can take my word for It, she would sweep every thing before her. I sincerely hope she will cross the Atlantic, If for no other purpose than to show them over there what a Yankee yacht is like. Believe me, It will teach them something. I can assure Commodore Morgan and Mr. Iselln that they will bo cordially welcomed, and we shall have plenty of cups for them to race for. If the Co lumbia races In English waters I shall certainly put the Shamrock against her. "The Shamrock will bo fitted with her small yawl rle at once. She will bo ready by a week' from tomorrow, which time'I have fixed for her and the Erin to start on the return voyage. I shall then feel free, and shall sail the next day on the American liner St, Louis. I want to see the Shamrock safely oft before I start. "I want to say again that I have been treated with the utmost courtesy by everyone that I have met. Never for a moment hae the yachtsmen here mado rae feel otherwise than perfectly at home. I have failed to win your cup, but I proved what I said before I sail ed for It, that any yachtsman who came for the cup would have every fair opportunity to win It. I am deeply toucneu at tne spirit shown by you Americans In arranging for that lov lng cup for me. I shall prize It above all things. It shows that my estimate of American character Is not wrong, "I am at liberty to say now that the wild guesses as to what Shamrock cost were all of them far out. The cost of the boat alone as she Is now, without considering the expense of tho crew or anything else, is about half a mil lion dollars." Thor Ilnvo vlrondy Killed Two Men mid Wounded Two OtHer. Atchetton. Kan., Oct. 23. Two rob bers Saturday night shot and killed one nmn and wounded another in n store at Doniphan, which they lstor robbed, and yesterday ambushed and killed a policeman and wounded an other man, both members of a poeee puraulug them. The robbers are sur rounded six miles north of Atchison. The dead are: John Ilrown, Doni phan; Robert N. I)lckeron, Atchison. Wounded: Charles Kuclig, Doniphan! James Hayes, Atchison. The robbera entered the store of Kucha, at Doniphan, and at the point ot revolvers ordered a number of men present to hold up their hand. The order was obeyed quickly, hut Kuche and Ilrown, son of the postmaster at Doniphan, made a move to resist. The pistole in the hands of the robbers cracked instantly. Ilrown fell dead where he atood and Kuchs got a wound in his arm. This waa the signal to flee, and the store was cleared In a wink, while the robbera hurriedly emptied the till and made off. A party, made up of Atchison and Doniphan men, all heavily armed, started out yesterday morning in search of the robbers. Late yesterday, six miles north of Atchieon, they come upon the robbers unawttres, the latter firing upon them from ambush. Rob ert Dlcrteraon, an Atchieon police of ficer, waa shot and killed at the first volley, and before a successful rally could be made by the pursuers James Hayeo fell with a bullet In his arm. Then the pursuers determined to wait a favorable opportunity for capturing the men alive. Much admiration Is extorted by the bravery shown by the Doers. The Times, which voices the general opin ion, says: 'They are honorable foes, ami well worthy our metal. Their sterling qualities ought to do much to facilitate the ultimate pacification of South Africa. That Is now the real end of the war. We have to settle for all the question of British supremacy and to banish forever the phantom of an Afrikander nation." Not so very long ago pirates attacked a vessel in the Chinese sea.
