Tho Twen tieth Kansas reclment nnd tho -100 dis charged soldiers who arrived here on Tuesday night on the transport Tar tar wore landed yesterday. Tho march to the 1'resldlo reservation was a con tinuous ovation. The streets wore thronged with excited people, nil anx ious to honor the returned horoes. Cheors upon cheers passed up and down the lines of neonlo. Cannon wero flrod at Intervals, bolls claused and whistles and steam calliopes added their respective noises to tho occasion. General Funston marched with Gov ernor Stanley, of Kansas, and oscort. Tho throngs surged around General Funston, and ho had great difficulty In making progress. Rounds of cheers greeted him, but his only acknowledg ment was a military snltito and an occasional (lofting of his cap. Tho crowds simply would not let the soldiers pass In peace. Breaks oc curred overy few minutes. Relatives and friends broke Into the ranks nnd marched with the soldiers, some Bmlltng and laughing and others crying. The regimental colors, llttlo tho worse for wear In spite of tho arduous campaign through which they had passed, called forth a tremendous burst of applause whenever they were sight cd. Taking It all In all, tho soldiers looked to be in fair health, but of course there were somo who showed the effects of the severe campaign. Bringing up the roar of tho regiment wore the hospital wagons, not very heavily laden with sick. The parade was reviewed on van ness avenue by General Shatter, Gov ornor Stnnley and Governor Hogcrs, of Washington, and their staffs; General Funston in an interview said: "I have only this to say of the cam- palgn in the Philippines, everything is being done that could he to carry the war to on early and successful con- elusion. The report that I am anti- expansion la ridiculous and not worthy of serious consideration. I never In- timated such a thing and have been wrongly quoted in the matter. "The people must stop to consider when they are passing Judgments that there are countless conditions to be consianuy comuaueu anu overcome before headway can be made. I fear that the exact difficulties to the sit uation are not fully understood, Some mistakes have been made, but tho campaign has been conducted in a most nble and conscientious manner, and every man has done his best. No grave errors have occurred, but It Is always easy to look back and comment upon what has been done, even though that might havo been accomullshed under trying circumstances." Millions Given Away. Cirest prermrmtlons are being made at Southampton for the departure on Saturday of General Sir ltedvera Iluller, and a grant dem onstration is anticipated. The Duke of Connaught, the Duke of York, Iord I.ansduwue, (lenersl Urd Wolseley and Sir Evelyn Wood are expected to ac company him to Southampton from London. It Is announced that the fleet of transports conveying General Sir Ited vers Duller's army corps will be es corted by warn hips, while further dis patch boats and gunboats will be sent to South African waters. The government 1ms already expend ed 5,000,000 In naval and military preparations, the orders placed wttlt contractors this weok alone amount ing to JC 000,000. The authorities, an ticipating a serious reduction in the output of the South African coal mines, has ordered S.000 tons of Knglish steam coal to be sent to the Capo for tho use of tho warships. A dispatch to The Dally Telegraph from Ladysmlth, dated yeeterday, alone among the specials received, declares that war has begun by the Boers lit Natal. The correspondent says: "Free State burghers have seized a train at llarrlsmlth which was the property of the Natal government. Tuesday night a mounted patrol was stoned by Boers, Tho men's orders wore not to Are unless they wero fired upon." The other dispatches only represent that hostilities are imminent. A dispatch from Sandsprult says n council of war has been held and de velopments are expected today. No further council will be necessary, as all plans are matured. The dragging of tho enormous slego gun which has been posted by tho German detachment on the Free State- rnESIIJENT KltUQElt. Natal bordor In a position to nid War kerstroom, up tho declivity to the point where it was to be placed, was a splendid feat. Four teams of oxen failed In nn attempt to move that-gun to tho desired position, whereupon a body of men built a road and dragged the gun up the declivity In six hours. The Dally Mall this morning pub llshps a report of an Interview with J. B. Robinson, tho African million aire, who declares that the Boers havo plenty of food and ammunition and aro quite unlikely to disperse. "On the contrary," says Mr. Itobln son, "they mean to fight, believing they have nn easy task. The campaign, however, will be a short one once Gen eral Buller begins his advance." The rumor that Mr. Conyngham Oreene had been murdered is of doubt ful origin and Is considered extremely improbable, as it is believed that, in obedience to orders from the imperial government, Mr. Greene had already left Pretoria, confiding the care of British Interests to United States Con sul Mucrum. A Johannesburg dispatch says: The commission having the matter in charge Is Issuing very few permits to British subjects to remain here. In subscribing to the oath those who wish to remain undertake to behave In a calm, submissive manner, to remain obedient to the laws and authorities and neither directly nor indirectly to do aught against the independence of the country or the people. The oath Is not regarded as one of neutrality. A satisfactory reply from the British government Is not expected, and all arrangements have been made for the declaration of martial law. A dispatch from Newcastle, Natal, says that a meeting held there In tho Interest of peace a crowd of patriots Invaded the hall, stormed tho plat form and moved and carried a reso lution to support the government iu the war. The police were called upon to restore order and finally cleared the hall. No news has been received as to tho rumored advance of the . Boers upon Charleston, but a movement in the Boer camp is reported. A dispatch from Glencoe camp, dated yosterday noon, says that the burgh ers are reported to bo beyond the president's control and hostilities are expected at any moment. The military authorities in South Africa have instituted a censorship over all the telegrams in order to pre vent information regarding British movemonts from reaching the Boers. A dispatch to The Times from Sand sprult reports that parades were held there in honor of tho anniversary of President Krugor's birthday. The cor respondent says: "By General Joubert's kindness I have been in tho Boer camp four days. Notbln'g noteworthy has occurred. General Joubert's headquarters and the artillery camp are about ten miles from the border. He carefully patrols the frontier, but forbids large armed bodies to cross tho border or show themselves near the border. The ar rangement of the camps and commls tarlat Is rough and ready. There U yery little drill or discipline, but the general result is satisfactory, each man or small mess attending to their own affairs. The following cablegram was received last night by the Chicago Tribune from President Kruger, of the Transvaal republic. The cablegram was sent In answer to a message from The Tribune asking a btajqiuent of thcuosltlqu of the Trans- tr varmmh8 rfrrterfl trKIs. The Cable gram follows. "We wish to thank our many Arneri can friends for sympathy In the pres ent crisis of the republic. Last Mon day we gave ISngland 48 hours notice within which to give assurance thai tho dispute will be settled by arbitra tion or other peaceful means. The no tice expires at 6 today. An answer of ten words from Th Tribune to President Kruger giving the time of the receipt of the message In Chicago was prepaid, the people In Pretoria being evidently somewhat ap prehensive that the message might not get through. LOYAL CANADIANS. Tlio.v Will Ak to llnr All Ittpmiio of Fui'mImIiIiik Tro. Toronto. Oct, 12. The Globe. th official mouthpiece of the Dominion government. In its Ottawa correspond ence, states that the Imperial govern ment has cabled the Dominion author ities asking how many men Canada can furnish for service In South Af rica at once. A reply has been sent stating that 1,000 men, the pick of the Canadian troops, can be put on board a transport within ten days or two weeks. It is said that a transport has already been engaged to sail from Montreal on the 23d or 24th Inst. A contract was given Tuesday to a big clothing Arm In Hamilton. Out., by the government for 1.000 uniforms. Cav alry, Infantry and mounted Infantry are to be sent forward. The greatest enthusiasm is mani fested throughout Canada, and a sec ond contingent of 1,000 men will un doubtedly be offered In a few weeks. Tho Imperial government states that Canada will be asked to land the troops at Natal or Delagoa bay, aud that all expenses are to be paid by tho home government. It Is probable, however, that Canada will ask to bo allowed to boar the entire expense of equipping, transporting and looking after tho men. 'DEATH IN THE POT." " Death in the pot." That sentence condenses the story of a tragedy. A little family gathering. A fine dinner cooked in the large copper kettle long disused, and the entire family poisoned by the accumulated verdigris. The utory was told by the newspapers from oue cud of the laud to the other. But it was soon forgotten. The moral of it is, that tltc purest ot toou, put into a toul vessel, instead of ministering to life may be come a minister of death. If the stomach is diseased it is like the poisonous kettle, which taiuts everything that goes into it. The symptoms are irregular appetite, undue fullness after eating, distressed feeliug in the stomach, of fluttering and sinking sensations, pal pitation, dizziness, ringing in ears, sour or bitter risings nnd constipation. Not all these symptoms may be present at the same time, but any of them shows dis ease in the digestive or alimentary tract. The intimate relation of the stomach to the blood, heart, liver and lungs makes it a medical maxim in exploring the causes of obscure diseases to " start with the stomach." It is upon this principle that Dr. Pierce's Golden Medi cal Discovery effects so many and such remarkable cures. It cleanses the stom ach and the system is cleansed. It in creases the action of the blood .making glands, and the body is enriched by the purified blood. It strengthens the di gestive or nutritive organs and these strengthen the whole body by increasing the quantity and quality of its nourish ment. It carries off the poisonous, effete matter. In this way it re-establishes health, banishing the bodily aches, which are but symptoms of the stomach's condition. All medicine dealers sell " Golden Medical Discovery." If they try to substitute something else, it is because "something else'' pays better. Insist on "Golden Medical Discovery" if you want to be cured.
