Lieuteuaut-Coloncl James E. Barnett, can
didate for State-Treasurer, accompanied by a
number of other ofllcers and mon of the
Fighting Tenth Pennsylvania Regiment, and
also the Tenth Regiment Qleo Club, com
posed of soldiers who fought in Luzon, will
visit Shenaudoah to-morrow evening and
will address the patriotic citizens of the
town in Ferguson's theatre.

Tenth liegiment :

Major Killiiu and Colonel Barnett are close
friends, an intimacy born of war time com
radeship, fighting shoulder to shoulder.
It goes without saying that Shenaudoah
will give tho men who fought under the
Stars and Stripes in the Philippines a royal
welcome and it is safo to predict that Fer
guson's Theatre, to-morrow evening, will bo
taxed to its utmost capacity. The heart of
every Pennsylvania!! throbs with dolight
when roviewiug the honors that havo been
showered upon tho officers nud men of this
gallant Tenth volunteers, and tho people of
Shenandoah will join In tho acclaim. Tbo
Tenth ranked with the crack regiments at
Luzon and made a record of which we are all
proud.
The arrangements for Col. Barnett's recep
tion here are about coraplotcd, and a reception
committed comprising about one hundred of
the leading citizens ot tho town will meet
the party at the depot to-morrow evening and,
headed by a band of music, will march
through tho principal streets to the theatre.

and their ovation w.U bo a demonstration of
popular enthusiasm. It will not be confined
to one particular class, but the people of the
town as a whole will join in the-wolcome and
bestow upon a gallant soldier a testimonial of
their regard and affection which cannot but
bo taken as a compliment to every man who
served in tho Philippines with the peeiless
Uowoy, and especially as a mark of esteem
and love for all the brave ions of tho Koy-

Col. Burnett aud party wilt speak at
Lebanon this evening, and will arrive at
Plnegrove to-morrow morning, and will bo
met (hero by Chairman Quail aud a reception
committee. They will arrive at Pottavillo
at 11.00 a, m, on Tuesday, and will address a
noon meeting of the shops employes at that
place, and during the afternoon will hold a
reception at Pennsylvania Hall hotel and at
the rooms of the Central Republican Club,
and subsequently visit one or more of the
suburbs.
The party will leave at 4:30 p. m over the
I'. s It. railroad, for Shenaudoah, and en
routo will make a short stop at Mabauoy
Piano, and will arrive at Shenandoah at 0
P. m., wkere the party will bo met at the
depot by the reception committee, which has
arranged lor a hearty welcome.
Wednesday will be spent lu the Mabanoy
valley. Ashland, Uilborton, Mabanoy Plaue.
Girardvlllo and Mabanoy City will be visited.

tional commercial congress, composed

sentatives from the most important
chambers of commorco of'all trade cen
ters, will convene In the Auditorium of
the National Export exposition here
on Thursday next.
Assistant Socrotary of State David
J. Hill will preside nt tho opening
ceremonies and deliver an address of
welcome to tho foreign delegates. The
full diplomatic corps at Washington
will be present to give eclat to the oc
casion, and several memoers of the
cabinet will accompany Assistant Sec
retary Hill and take part In the day's
exercises. The address ot the assist
ant secretary will be followed by a
speech by Mayor Ashbrldgo, of this
city, who will welcome the members
ot .the congress to the city and extend
to them the courteslses of the munici
pality. In the morning prior to tho
assembling of tho congress a reception
will be held at the city hall to the
delegates and dignitaries gathered to
participate in the opening ceremonies.
At tho Auditorium, upon tho con
clusion of Mayor AsUbrldgo's address,
Mr. Charles H. Cramp, president of the
Philadelphia Commercial Museum, will
formally open the proceedings In an
address explaining the purposes and
scope of the congress. His address
will be followed by a speech by Direc
tor W. P. Wilson. President McKlnley
Will participate in the opening of the
congress by sending a message im
mediately upon tho conclusion of the
other proceedings of the day.
Among the delegates at the opening
of the congress will be a large num
ber ot representatives from Spain, and
one of tho most interesting figures
among the dolegates will be tho presi
dent of tho chamber of commorco of
Manila.

It is quite likely that at tho coming con.
yentiou of tho Episcopal church that the
preseut Central Penua., diocese of which
Luzerne and Carbon counties are a part, will
be divided and a new diocese created with
Scranton as the residence of the Bishop, who
will likely be the Rev. Israel. Schuylkill
will be included with Luzorue. This is the
divisiou known as the East and West line
and would make a dioceso composed of com
pact contiguous and prosperous counties.

Welcome to a Schuylkill Soldier.
M. J. Rowlaud, who loft liomesvillo over
five years ago, returned last week from the
Philippines, where he had beeu serving
Uncle Sam for over a year as a soldier in the
First Wyoming Volunteers. Ho arrived at
Ashland and proceeded to the home of his
brother In-law, John Coliban, oxpecting next
day to surprise his mother, brother and sisters
at homo, but next morning, before he awoke,
a delegation arrived to escort him home,
where they made the old village ring with
joy as they escorted their old schoolmate
homo again.

Narrowly IWoaprcl Death.
William Kay, 2(1 years, Frank SchofTstall,
'JS years, are In a critical condition at the
Miners' hospital, Fountain Springs, owing to
an accident at tbo Greenwood colliery, near
Tamaij.ua, yesterday morning, by which they
narrowly escaped death. They went Into
the mines to complete somo work tboy were
unable to finish on Saturday and were caught

sustained a compound dislocation of the
right ankle and his body was badly contused
and lacerated. Kay's right log was fractured
above tho knee, his head was lacerated and
his spine injured. It is feared bo was In
ternally Injured, and he may die. Conrad
Barlet, who worked with' tho men, jumped
away from the fall in time and was only
slightly Injured.

Patrick Conry, will regret to learn that her
illness has taken a rery serious turn. Drs.
Callen and Spalding, tho physicians in
attendance, could extend no hope for re
covery to day.

Ueld For an Assault,
Mike Keran and Stephen Swecz were ar
raigned before Justice Shoemaker Saturday
night, on complaint of Mrs. Mary Casey, who
alleged that ou the night of tbo 1st iust, the
accused murderously assaulted her husband,
Michael Casey. It was charged that Swecz
engaged Casey in conversation while the
other man stood near with a stone in his
hand. Finally Keran boat Casey on the head
with the stone. Casey has not beeu able to
leave his homo since. Keran furnished flOO
bail and Swecz $300 bail.
Choir Augmented.
Last evening Samuel Walker assumed his
position as leader of the Methodist Episcopal
church choir at Wm. Penn. The choir was
so augmented that it filled the entire chancel.
It reflects excellent work at rehearsals and
the anthems were rendered with admirable
precision and effect. Tho service was for the
special benefit of children and the infant
class rendered a number of selections under
tho direction of Mrs. John Knight.

been In the Schuylkill county Jail for several
days, charged by Collector Clay W. Evans,
with the Illegal soiling of cigars without
stamps, was released ou bail Saturday, The
cigars for the sale of which Chappone is be
ing prosecuted, were shipped from New York
to McAdoo consigned as fish.

The suit of Levi Rcfowich vs. Samuel
Block, alleging slander, was not finished Sat
urday. When tbe plaintiff's witnesses had
beeu heard adjournment wa3 made bywgree
ment to Monday, October 10th.
Preparing fur Coal Storage.
A place of storage for coal is being con
structed at Packer No. 3 colliery, so that tbe
colliery will not be thrown idle when there
is a shortage in the supply of cars. The col
liery works six full days every week.
The Teachers' Institute.
The local school teachers, and thoso of
West Mahanoy township, Rlugtown and
neigbboriug places, left here this morning to
attend the 37th annual session of the
Teachers' Institute of Schuylkill county,
which convened at Pottsville to-day. The
Institute will bold sessions until next Friday
afternoon.
Fire at Ashland Yesterday.
A tiro broke out in a house owned by
Bernard Kelly, Ashland, early yesterday
morning, and before the blaze could be ex
tinguished tbe entire inside of the house had

BURNED TO DEATH.

Jacob Shinner, of Bowman's patch, near
Mahanoy City, was burned to death at his
homo at 10:30 o'clock Saturday night. His
body was so badly charred that It was un
recognizable Shiunors lived alone nnd was
last seen at niuo o'clock Saturday night,
when ho entered his houso, smoking a pipe.
About an hour Iator his home was discovered
on tiro. The lesidonts of the patch hastened
to tho scene, but were unable to extinguish
the firo on accouut of tbe lutlammable nature
of the small building. An Investigation
disclosed tho charred body In that part of the
house which Shinners used as a bedroom.
The victim was sixty years old.

Ilg Scare Over Little Fire.
The continued shrieking of Lawrence col
liery whistle at 0 o'clock Saturday night,
threw tho residents of Mabauoy Plane into a
frenzy of excitement. The colliery seemed
enveloped in 'flames and terror-stricken
people rush' d pll moll to the scene along
with the fire department. It proved to bo
the blacksmith and carpenter shop afire, but
the big breaker appeared iu Imminent dan
ger aud the firemen set to work. Ten yards
away stood a well filled powder houso and at
various times it threatened to go up. but by
sticking to their task, tbo lirouien succeeded
lu preventing a spread. Both shops were de
stroyed, together with their coutcuU.
