(Continued from first Page.) pamed the sword to Prculdant MrKln loy. In presenting the sword to Ad miral Dow 9' the president Mid: "Admiral Dewty. from vonr nntrancs In the harbor of New York with your gnllant crew ttnd villnnt ship the demonstrations which everywhere have greeted you reveal the public ee teem of your hemic action anil the full- neea or the love In which you lire held by your country. The voice of the ation 1 lifted In n raise and gratitude for the distVigiilshed nnd memorable service; you have rendered the country and nil the people give yju affeetion- to woieonie home, In which I Join with all my heart. Your victory exalted American valor and extended Ameri can authority. It gives me great pleas ure and groat honor in behalf of all tho people to hand you this sword, the gift of the nation, voted by the con gress of the United States." l)mvtj 'h Spooi-h of TlinnKn, The president handed the admiral the sword with a deep bow, and there was n roar of applause as Dewey re ceived it. The crowd was hushed as he turned to reply. Admiral Dewey said: "I thank you, Mr. President, for this groat honor you have couferred upon me. I thank congress for what It has done. I thunk the secretary of the navy for his gracious words. I thank my countrymen fur this beautiful gift, which shall be nn heirloom In my fam ily forever as an evidence that re publics are not ungrateful, and I thank you, Mr. Chairman and gentle men of the committee for the gracious, cordial and kindly welcome which you have given me to my homo." T he band played "The Star Spangled Banner" and then Cardinal Gibbons pronounced the benediction. Following the benediction the ar rangements for the review of the mili tary escort by Admiral Dewey were carried out. There wore demands from tho crowd to "hold up the sword." Admiral Dewey lifted It. and then It was raised again by one of the com mitteemen. Upon the latter putting It down Admiral Dewey, at tho request of a photographer perched on a step lad der noarby, held the sword In both hands while the cameru was snapped. There was a few moments' delay In the starting of the escort, and dur ing the Interval the admiral and the president wore Joined In the stand by tho cnblnot ofllclals. Tho Olympla men, who bad been placed at points of vantage whonco they could seo their chief honored, lirst marched across the plaza to take the placo of honor at the right of lino and were greeted with continuous cheering. Whon they fell Into place the review began. General Miles and his staff rode by In saluto and then took up a position on the plaza north of the stand. In the rear of the Olympia's men marched detachments from the Ma- chlas, the Marietta and the Iowa, and the famous black goat, which Is the mascot, trotted along with the Jnckies with most nmuslng importance. A Tr.vlnir Dny For Domy, When the review was concluded tho admiral and President McKlnloy en tered tho latter s carriage and were driven to tho While House. Thence the ndmiral was taken to the McLean residence, always through cheering crowds. For Dewey It was n trying as well as a triumphal day. The strain upon the admiral reached almost to the breaking point. None but thoso near est to him could see how he labored to repress his feelings during the ad dress of Secretary Long, but when he nrose to receive tho sword from the hands of the president no one could mistake the flash of tho white gloved hand as It rose to dash away the tears bofore the admiral came to tho right attitude of attention before his chief, When It becamo Dewey's turn to re ply his voice failed him, and he made the effort twice beforo his lips would respond. When he did succeed his tones were clear and stoady, but so low that only those nearest him could hear. There was an exquisite bit of comedy following the trying formalities, though it escaped all but those dl rectly on the stand. As the admiral closed and took his seat he turned to the president and In a tone of quizzical appeal Inquired: "Now, really, don't you think I did pretty well for nn amateur? One of the moat remarkable features of the eventful day was tho ovation to Bear Admiral Schley on the return of tho party from the capltol to the White House. His carriage was sev eral numbers behind that of the presl dent and Admiral Dowey, and received an ovation that could be scnrcely rank ed below that accorded to tho admiral himself. The crowd surgod around hla carriage till the horsos were brought to a foot pace, and finally a company of cadets came to the rescue. Admiral Dewey was given an lm promptu reception nt the Metropolitan club late yesterday afternoon. It was a complete surprise to him, his first Intimation of It being when one of tho club members called for him. The ad miral was accompanied by Flag Lieu tenant Brumby. He walked over from the McLean residence, and at tho club numerous old friends grpeted him en thusiastically. The rest of the after noon the admiral spent quietly In his rooms at Mrs. McLean's residence. Last night President McKlnloy, In honor of Admiral Dewey, gave tho larg est dinner party In the history of tho White House social functions. Covers Were laid for over 80 persons. The guests included the cabinet, the gov ernors of nine states. Justices of the supreme court, some of the members 0t both houses of congress, army and navy officials and others. It was a brilliant affair. An Impromptu Ilocoptlon. The Onnernl n Tnrt I'r ltrlnI Shot Willi Itlillnir Townrit Inina. Manila, Oct. 4.- The statement that Major lYIce asked Admiral Watson to end (he gunlxmiK to his support In the recent engagement of his regiment In the vicinity of Itnus Is Incorrect. General Ijtwton yesterday dispersed Die Insurgents, driving them to the westward. The purpose of the rebels was to cut the communication main tained between Ilacoor r.nd Iinus by means of the road between those places at a point between Imus and tbe east bank of the river. The Insurgents had trenches along the west bank, commanding the open spaces. A force of 1,500 rebels attacked Imus Monday and 600 proceeded against Ilacoor with detachments along the river. Yesterday Colonel Daggett's force spread along the road from Ilacoor to ward Imus, and three companies o( the fourth regiment, under Captain Holds, were thrown out from Imus, the two commands forming a junc tion. The entire line crossed the river and drove the Filipinos from their trenches to the westward, through rice fields and thickets. The marine whose services were tendered by Ad miral Watson, crossed the river nenr the bay, forming a part of the line of advance. Before the forward movement was begun the American artillery shelled the enemy's position. The only Ameri can casualty was the wounding of a lieutenant of artillery. A number of prisoners were taken. General Lawtou. while riding tin tip' road to Imus, was the target for man) shots. 1 itatorilH.v'H firtt'lTr,'i ,rthiM. At Baltimore Baltimore, 10: Phila delphia. 5. They come to consider back-ache, head-ache, side-ache, draRgiiifr, dreary, bearing down feeling, hot tlashes and nervous irritability as a part and parcel of their womanhood. They get used to being half dead alt the time. They forget that they ever were anything else. If they don't have to go to bed and stay there they don't try to get well. Nine -tenths of all the sickness of women is due to some derangement or disease of the organs distinctly feminine. All such sickness can be cured is cured every day by DR. PIERCE'S FAVORITE PRESCRIPTION: It Makes Weak Women Strong, And Sick Women Well. It acts directly on the organs affected and is at the same time a general tonic for the whole system. It cures female complaint right in the privacy of home. It makes unnecessary the disagreeable questioning, examinations and local treatment so universally insisted upon by doctors, and so abhorrent to every modest woman. t. S.
