A dlspntch from Pretoria snvn: President KrilKer nnd the cxecutlvo council met here last evening to consider the reply to bo made to tho British secretary oi staio for the colonies. Mr. Chamberlain They aro Btlll conferring by telegraph with the Ornnce Freo Stato. The tie clslon is anxiously awaited by crowds outsldo the executive building. A communication has boon received from tho British government stating that although anxious for a prompt reply the imperial authorities do not desire to tie the Transvaal autnori ties down to 48 hours. Tho imperial government, when In timating that It did not desire to fix a time limit, pointed out thnt Its chief desire was only- ror "rcasonaDio promptness in order to put an end to the tension. It Is understood that President Km cer is awaiting the nrrlval from Bloom fonteln of Mr. Fischer, of the Orange Free State executive council, before drafting his reply. The reply will possibly come before the volksraad this afternoon. The de clslon of the executive will undoubt edly be Influenced by tho action of tho Orango Free Stato. Tho government is still willing to attend the Joint commission originally proposed. Tho report as to a time limit of 48 hours aroso from the fact that the British diplomatic agent at Pretoria Conyngham Greene, in presenting Mr, Chamberlain s dispatch expressed hope that a reply would bo given by the Transvaal government by Thurso day. Tho Capo Times and the Cape Argus both consider the British note goner ous and conciliatory, and all the pa pers, Including tho Krugerlto organs issumo that the Transvaal will comply with" the British demands. It Is believed that the Orango Free Stato volksraad will be summoned to consider the situation. The Transvaal war office denies any knowledge of the reported offer of 10, 000' Irish-Americans to fight against Great Britain. Military developments continue and the work of preparation for emergen' cles goes on. Upon the arrival of tho next batch of British troops the head quarters staff of the Royal artillery will bo transferred to Klmberly, whither a battery will proceed to pro tect the diamond mines. The war Instructions Issued to rail way officials direct them to remain at their posts as long as possible. When the enemy seizes any section of the line the officials must go to the next unseized point. Thoy are forbidden to carry arms or to resist any regular force. The Times regards Mr. Chamber lain's dispatch aa "clear, resolute and earnest, without being peremptory, not necessarily an ultimatum, but a pre Hide to an ultimatum, should the Transvaal's reply prove unfavorable.1 This fairly represents the feeling of tho London mtfrnlng papers. Even The Dally Chronicle, which Is virtually pro-Kruger In Its sympathies, urges the Boers to accept "the Imperial gov ernment's reasonable demands, which threaten no ulterior danger to the In dependence of the Transvaal." A dispatch from Pletermaritzburg, capital of Natal, says that the out landers' council expresses great dis satisfaction with the British noto, complaining that the Imperial author ities are willing to accept Inadequate concession In order to avoid war. Dourko Cockran, and Wlftconiin wero most numerously represented. The meeting took place In Central Music Hall and was called to order by Franklin H. Head, the temporary chairman appointed by the Civic Fed eration. The delegates listened to an address of wolcome to Illinois by At torney General Akin on behalf of Gov ernor Tnnner. who by Illness was pre vented from appearing In person. Mi. Akin was followed by Dr. Taylor, who welcomed the delegates to Chicago on behalf of Mayor Harrison. With the progress of the speaking It became evident that many of the dele gations had mine with firm convictions for or against trade combinations. Thb speech of Mr. Wooten, of Texas, deliv ered during the afternoon, and ham mering trusts In a merciless manner, aroused the wildest enthusiasm In the ranks of the labor representatives and the delegations from many western and southern states, while tho eastern ers generally smiled critically and kept their arms folded. Tho attempt to round the somowhat shapeless mass of delegates Into work ing form resulted In considerable dis order. Suggestions for the makeup of a committee to arrange a program to be followed the next three days ot the conference popped from every part of the house with such rapidity that It was with difficulty that the tempor ary chairman extracted tho basis for resolutions which were finally adopted. This was not accomplished till W Bourko Cockran and August Gnns, a delegate representing tho Knights of Labor, had become the center of .1 scene which provoked unrestrained laughter, Mr. Cockran Joining. The head of tho New York contin gent. In an endeavor to bring a little order out of chaos, arose while Mr. Gans, in a very loud tone of oratory, was declaring that his delegation was of more importance than that of anv state. When the New Yorker begun Epoaklng the labor delegate fished from his hip pocket a pair of opera glasses, and at a short range contemplated tho speaker, commenting occasionally In such a way that the merriment at tained a volume which drowned the volco of the eastern orator. It was resolved finally that the Civic Federation, lurough Its chnlrman, Mr. Head, should conduct yesterday's meet ing and that a commltteo on program consisting of one man from each state delegation and one from each or ganization national In Its scope should be appointed. The labor organizations did not secure recognition until vig orous speeches had been made by Mr. Gans and John W. Hayes, also a Knights of Labor delegate. Mr. Hayes created something of a sensation by declaring in language as r.cornful ns It was vigorous that "he didn't want to be classed with the New Jersey dele gation, even Ifho did vote In that 'cradle of trusts',' " William Wirt Howe was selected chairman of tho meeting, and after a hot discussion was elected pormanent chairman of the conference, though threo vice chairmen,- each to presldo during one day, were selected. It was a happy solution of what at one time promised to be a split. No one wa3 willing to allow a permanent chairman to be appointed to preside at all ses sions, lest he should favor some fac tion. The chairman and vice chair man method of disposing of the ques tion was hailed with applause. Tho vice chairmen selected were: Thurs? Any disease may be deadly enough when you have no adequate means at hand to confront it. Plenty of peo ple die every day of curable diseases, simply because the stereotyped, "routine, senseless methods and remedies usually employed arc not half-way equal to the occasion. But when a truly scientific remedy Ilk Dr. Pierce's great " Golden Medical Dis covery" is brought to bear upon the complaints which it is designed to cure, it penetrates the tough hide-bound armor of obstinate disease with the same un erring accuracy and power with which a modem rifle penetrates a savage shield. " I had been doctoring and using patent medi cine for about a year and a half, being unable to work mot or the time," says John I- Cough enour, Esq., of Glensavage, Somerset Co.. 1'a. "The doctor said I had heart disease and Indi- f;estion. It began with a choking and oppreited celing In the chest I seemed to be raw from my throat clear down Into ray stomach. My appetite was usually poor, and I was as weak and nervous as though I had been starved out for months. My heart kept throbbing contin ually and I was short of breath. "HlnatlvTMrntflttn, t V Tln- Tl . . T., 1 N. Y., for advice and he informed me that I had indigestion and torpid liver. I did not think that diagnosis was right, but I ordered six bot tles of Dr. Pierce's Golden Medical Discovery nnd began its use. After using three bottles I began to improve slowly and soon went to work; and I have been working ever since." For obstinate constipation Dr. Pierce's Pleasant Pellets are the most perfect medicine ever devised. They trive prompt, comfortable, permanent relief. Philadelphia & Readinq R'y.
