OUR COUNTRY : First. Last and Forever. Tim gentleman from Auburn, tbe iioniiiml liunil ot tlie Republican party in this county, lms troubles of hit) own waking. He should pull himself together, and nt once. A ClTr without a single idle industry applies to Reuding today probably for the first time in Its history. More men nre nt work nt better wages than ever before, nnd nt present the city wage earners number probnbly 18,000 to 20,000. Word comes from Nebraska, Iowa, the Dakotas nnd Minnesota that far mers are having difficulty in getting help enough to harvest their crops, nnd in many localities it has 'been necessary for women and boys to assist in gathering the grain. Em ployment agencies in Chicago nre sending hundreds of men to the harv est ilelds and the constant demand is for more. The lack of help hns had the effect of raising wages in an un usual degree. Six dollars a day is offered for engineers to run threshing machines ; $4 is offered for feeders nnd sack men, and 3.25 and $2.00 for common hands, including board. That "Matchless" Leader. It is interesting to note the differ ence of opinion which exists between some of the great men of the Demo cratic party on the question of ex pansion, says the Philadelphia Star. Even if there were no uightmare of silver to rise up nnd terrorize those who nre seeking to bring order out of the chaos which exists in the Demo cracy, there is still grave danger that the subject of expansion and anti expansion will prove a source of seri ous concern to the chief meu of the Democratic party. On the one hand he who the Penn sylvania Democrats have styled "our matchless leader," is striving with might nnd main to array his party followers upon the side of anti-expan sion, or, ns he delights to cnll it, nnti imperialism. By speeches and by writings he is endorsing the views and policies of the Hon. Edward Atkinson, nnd he has lately used the columns of the Independent tonttnek the policy of the Administration in dealing with the Filipinos. On the other hand, we see the star- eyed goddess of reform, in the porson of Henry Wntterson, taking up the cudgels in behalf of the expansion side of the question. In tho Louis ville Courier-Journal he riddles Mr. Bryan's arguments fore and nft. He exposes the vulnerable points in the article, and points out clearly that the doctrine of expansion in the United States is ns old as the Govern ment itself. "If," says Mr. Watter son, "we cannot acquire sovereignty over the Filipinos, then we could not acquire sovereignty over the Creoles in Louisiana and the Spaniards in Florida, and rightfully Louisiana still belongs to Frauoe and Florida to Spain." Without presuming to settle the quarrel between these two eminent members of the Democratic party, it is proper to say that the position taken by Mr. Wntterson Is the correct one. Tbe United States entered into the war with Spain with no idea of waging a warfare for the acquisition of territory. The sudden and unex pected viotory of Dewey in Manila bay opened up a problem from -whioh tho United States could not get away, even had it been so inclined. Mr. Bryan and his followers need not worry themselves nnneoessnrlly about the matter. The Republican jmrty wjll meet und settle this ques tionns it has met nnd settled other momentous questions in the pnst, and that, too, without the nBsistance of the Deinooratio party. In the mean time let the bloodless Internecine war between the DemooratlB brethren proceed. It amuses them and doesn't hurt anybody. 53.00 to Niagara Fall ami ICetuni via the Lehigh Valley Railroad.
