Tho Democrats lmve nominated a candidate to succeed Judge Pershing. Mr. AVadlingcr's personal character or legal attainments cannot be ques tioned. He Is an able lawyer and a genial companion, but as tlic nominee of the Democratic party ho places himself and the political organiza tion he represents as opposed to minority representation so far as the judiciary is concerned. There are now three Democratic lawyers on the Bench, and there undoubtedly ought to be one Republican. Commenting upon this subject the Philadelphia Press says : "There are good reasons why no Democratic nomination should hare been made. Schuylkill county- now has four Judges, including the Orphans' Court Judge.and all are Democrats. Though the county went Democratic at the last election for Governor by a ma jority of 4,000, it was carried by Hastings in 1894 by a majority of 2,000, and by McKinley in 180G by a majority of 2300. The. partisan as cendancy in the county is uncertain, und there is not a very great differ ence in the vote of the two parties under ordinary circumstances. In view of these facts It would have been a mere matter of justice to themselves for the Democrats to concede at least one Common Pleas Judge to the Re publicans and to have loft their ticket open so that the name of the Repub lican candidate when nominated could be put on it. "The Republicans of Schuylkill have shown their non-partisan dis position In the judicial elections in that county in a way that should haye borne fruit. When in 1897 the erm of Judge Bechtel, a Democrat, was about to expire, the Republican county convention formally nomi nated him without waiting for Demo cratic action. Later Judge Bechtel also received the nomination of his party and was elected with the sup port of both parties. Itwasaproper thing to do and was no less honorable to the Republicans than to Judge Bec'atel. The fact that Governor Pattison had made the Schuylkill Bench solidly Democratic by the ap pointment of a Democrat to succeed a Republican upon the death of Judge Green was not allowed to create any prejudice against Judge Bechtel. "Last year, when Judge Koch, a Republican who was on the bench by appointment and had' shown un usual fitness for the work was the nominee of his party for election to a full term the Democrats of the dis trict displayed their notions of a non partisan judiciary by opposing him with a Demoorat, whose election put every judicial post in the oounty in Democratic hands. Now Democra tic rapacity makes another partisan contest." What our contemporary says on this question is voiced by all fair minded people of the county, Irre spective of party affiliations. There are, of course, bitter partisans who take a contrary view. It would have been a very graceful and proper thing on the part of the Democrats not to have antagonized the election of a Republican. There were, strange as it may seem, quite a number of delegates in the Democratic conven tiou who openly expressed themselves as favoring the endorsement of ex Judge Koch. He has shown himself to be unusually well equipped for the bench. The Republicans of Sohuyl kill county have frequently shown a non-partisan spirit in the eleotion of Judges, but there has never been any response from the Democrats in the way of appreciation. The Republicans will make their nomination on Monday, and let there be no mistake made in the selection of a candidate. The ablest man should be selected, and if that is done lie can win easily. There are those mentioned who, if nominated, could not possibly be elected and who if Think of Ease But Work On." If your Mood is impute you cannot even "think of ease." The blood is the greatest sustainer of the body and when you make it pure by taking Hood's Sarsa pariila you have the perfect health in tvhich even hard work becomes easy. ccd2 SaiJaparii&i UlMJJilU.l.l.ui.uair ni ii i iifcsif i-iii-Tt "OOLD DUST." Mr. Depow was tho principal spoakor. Ho said in part; "In Europo I found that thero was no sympathy for Spain on account of her defeat in tho lato war. I found nothing but curiosity about tho United Btntcs. Tho pcoplo of Europo oro won dering whothor wo will bo equal to tho task wo have taken In tho cast. An English statesman said to mo ono day. 'Why don't your country square Aguln nldo? We havo found In our wars with tho natives of eastern countries that they cannot bo trusted, and ns soon ns you mako nlllos of thorn you will find that thoy will Btab you In tho back. Wo found that to bring tho na tives to tho right way of looking nt matters of importance was to squaro them.' "I told that statesman that tho peo plo of tho United States would rather sond 100,000, 200,000 or oven 300,000 men to tho Philippines than spend $500 in 'squaring' Mr, Agulnaldo. "In my Judgment wo have not ap preciated thoroughly tho situation in the east. This has been principally due to tho bravery of tho men who aro there. They want tho honor nnd tho lllory of fighting tho contests and win ning without other aid. I think that is a mistake Wo should bend every energy nnd Bend Buch n forco to the Philippines as would crush out those rebels In less than six weeks' timo, Tho war should bo carried on In such a Way as to drive Agulnaldo and his crow Into submission, or Into tho sea."
