OUR COUNTRY : First, Last and Forever, EX-SECRETARY STRHIjINO Morton says tli nt tlio Trusts ure their own worst enemy and that they are bound to break themselves in the long run Mr. Morton says that the standard Oil Trust and the Sugar Trust are the only organizations that hare had large and. permanent success. If Mr. Morton's assertions bo true there is going to bo a tremendous wrecking time in the financial world one of those days when settling time comes. As the time for hiring teachers is at hand the Greensburg Tribune-Herald ofTors the following bit of good ad vice to' those whose duty it is to select the teachers for our boys and girls : "In this Important matter the direc tors should exercise the care that none but competent teachers are em ployed. Favoritism and nepotism should be cast to the winds, and the best and most competent persons chosen. Merit should be first con sidered, and, this being the case, our schools will take a step forward that will redound to the interest of the boys and girls of tho country." No public men, except Bryan, Towue, and two or three others, now talk of the free coinage of silver at the ratio of sixteen to one as essential to national prosperity. No promin ent newspapers now give any space in their columns to tho advocacy of the double standard theory. There is no ardent discussion of the old question in local or state conventions, and, although tho platforms of such conventions frequently contain a resolution reaffirming the Chicago platform of 1800, such resolutions are evidently put in from political motives and not to express an earnest convic tion. Immigration Question. AVithln the last few weeks the Im migration Commissioners have or dered back to their native land a number of immigrants who, it was alleged, had come here under contract with the Illinois Steel Company. A few days ago three more were sent back on the steamer Switzerland, who it was charged, had come here under violation of the contract labor laws and who were bound for Joliet, III., near which place there is a branch of the Illinois Steel Company. If these oharges are true the gov ernment should take some drastic measures to bring tho steel company to account for its violation of tho im migration laws The fact that the men did not escape the scrutiny of the Commissioners, and that the steel company did not profit by their at tempt to evade the law, is no reason why the company should not be held responsible. The law was designed to prevent the importation of an un desirable class of laborers who would enter into ruinous competition with the American workmen, and whose presence would tend to promote dis order In the country. Our own state has been for years a sufferer from this class of immigrants -who years ago were brought into the coal fields and iron foundries in differ ent parts of the state to take tha place of the labor then employed In these industries. Those imported have been a menace to the state ever since. They do not beoomo assimilated with the people of the state, and they have re. talned all the vicious traits which they brought Into the country. The strong hand of the law has been necessary on many occasions to keep them in subjection. There Is no lack of both skilled and unskilled labor in our own country and their is no necessity for any con cern to go abroad in search for cheap labor to enter Into competition with the men who have made this their permanent home, and who are law abiding citizens, striving to live as becomes the people of a civilized .country. The Government does right to pro teat, us far as possible, its people from the scum of the earth, too muoh of which has already been permitted to enter the country, w 0 r. - . ough, prompt, healthful, satisfactory IJCNKKHKTIO u 1 1 .1 it rt -.riii rs fur oar hard 1 Nt.rf ry Stock BxpHDnea a . nUri u ',tu)e iusving bum , rorrmtailoo to 1cm cat agent fVrraanedt ev. 1 ulormriH Tho boilnoo Bf THE mttr Jearri '11 Ml HI If.
