Porter gave out n, prepared statement concerning his Cuban and Porto llican tariff and fiscal work. Ho says in his statement that the fiscal machinery of the two islands was working satisfactorily : "The future of Cuba, in my opinion, can only be in annexation, and tho longer tho Cubans in Cuba and the antl-expausionlsts in the United States continue to docoivo themselves and the people by suggesting any other solution, tho longer capital and enterprise will be held from the island. Cuba must have a good government, and this she will achieve by becoming in due course of time a state of the United States. We cannot, in my opinion, make a special treaty with Cuba as an independent state. The United States is responsible for Cuba, and that responsibility is recognizod throughout the world." The Crime of 1899. A despatch from Lebanon tells of another advance in the wages of the men employed in tho bolt and nut works there, to go into efTeot to-morrow. This Is the fifth advance that the employes have received this year, and will make the rate $3.75 per ton. Other mills in the Lebanon valley an nounce a similar increase in wages. A few days ago an announcement was made that "an advance, amount ing on the average to about $1.00 a day, had been declared in the wages of 45,000 iron and steel workers." The Cambria Steel Company, at Johnstown, this week posted notices of "a general advance of wages of 10 per cent." About 8,500 men are affected by the advance. Nearly every day for months past there have been notices like these in the daily papers of thn oountfy. Tlio nemu. urutio and Populist papers are afraid to omit these notices of wage ad vances. They know, however, that they are death to their dogmas. They make no comment upon them. A "famine in the iron market" is also announced. This means that though the iron and steel workers of the country are busier than they ever were before, they can not meet the demand. The output of pig iron and of the various iron and steol fabrics has touched the highest figures ever reached in this or any other country. The report that there is a "famine" in the market, that the demand far out-runs the supply, shows that a further large Increase in production will have to be made if the orders which are rushing in are to be filled. In a general way this is the case -with all the important indnstries. Nobody ever saw before In the United States such an activity in the princi pal branches of trade. Nobody ever before saw so many wage advances in the same time as take place every week these days. Not only are tho ordinary wage workers benefited by the change which has come through the advent of the Republican party to power, bat farmers are also aided. The prices of all farm products are much above the line at which they stood a year ago. They were higher then than they were in 1890. Every per boh who works with his hands or his head throughout the United States is helped by the Republican prosperity -which has come to the country. Men buy more commodities because they dt more wages. They get more wages now than they did at the latter part of last year. Some of them are v likely to get still more before next year ends. More than 3,000,000 wage workers of the United States have had their Income largely increased since tho days of 1806, when the Bryanite reign of Industrial terjpr was under way. Between $2,000,000 and $3,000,000 more wages Is disbursed to the work ers of the country every day at pres- nt than was given at the time that the repudiation party was making its canvass three years ago. The country hears nothing of the J,crime of 1873" these days. It is the crime of 1809 the immense advance "in the wages of the vast majority of American workers in all the industries and the general high tide n the wave of Republican prosperity that is sweeping over the country which Ihs Non-Irritating Cathartic Easy to take, easy to operate Hood's mils Mrs. Bradlsh, of Detroit. Tr BLOOD POISON Tho doctors nro wnouy unaDio to goi nu 01 this vile poison, nd only attempt to heal up the outward appearance of tho disease the sores and eruptions. This they do by driving the poison into the system, and endeavor to keep it shut In with their constant doses of potash and mercury.
