Wlilta the pros pect for a settlement of the strike of the street railway men are brighter thl morning than they have been Rt any time since the trouble began, thero was more serious rioting: yesterday than at any previous time. The dis turbances began early In the morning, continued throughout the day, and last night a big mob surrounded the South SIdo barns of the Big Consolidated company, determined to get non-union men who are housed there. While the syinnathlaers of the strikers were hurl- ItiK bricks nnd Stones at non-union motormen and conductors a special committee of city council was trying to get the representatives of the strik ers and the o Ulcers of the company to gether, and it succeeded to the extent of Inducing the strikers to submit n proposition in writing and getting the consent of President Everett, ot tho Dig Consolidated, to submit the ganio to the board of directors today. The strikers' proposition abandons the de mand for the recognition ef the union, but asks that all the old men be taken back save these who may be convicted In court of destroying property. The members of the council committee believe a settlement Is In sight. There were two Incipient riots late yesterday afternoon. At the corner of Central and Wlllson avenues a crowd of 2,000 persons obstructed the pas sage of two crosstowu cars. UrlckH and stones were thrown and the win dows of the cars broken. One ot the non-union motormen, who gave hla name as Charles Jones, of Grand Rapids. Mich., was hit with a brick and so badly Injured that It was necessary to send him to a hospital. Later ii car on tho South Side line was at tacked near tho suburb of Brighton. The motornmn nnd conductor wero chased Into the woods by a mob, and they had not returned when It camo time to stop running the cars. No arrests were made In either case. The people of the South Side nursed their wrath all day. They made no at tempt to Interfere with the running of cars on the Clark avenue line so long as there was police protection, but In the evening there was a- determined effort to get at the non-union men who were taken to the Holmden avenue barns to oporato the cars from that end of the line. Soon after dark a mob of 6,000 people assembled. There were about 20 policemen at the barns, but they wero powerless to handle the mob. Fences wero torn down and tho crowd broke into the barns. In the meantime the non-union men had es caped to the attic, and the rioters con tented themselves with smashing, a few of the cars. By that time several wagon loads ot police had arrived and the mob was dispersed. At another place on the South SIdo switches wero torn up and the track blockaded. Four hundred employes of the Cleve land Foundry company struck late yes terday aftornoon because the company rofused to discharge a man who had ridden on n Big Consolidated car. The man was a foreman. When It became leuown that he hud ridden on a car tho molders went to tho officers of the company and demanded his discharge The officers refused to comply with tho demand, and all the men walked out ot tho works. Mothers who suffer undue pai" prior to or succeeding the liaby's birth are invited to consult Dr. R. V. Pierce, by letter, abso lutely without charge. The great success which has attended the careful methods pursued by Dr. Pierce, has caused imita tors to spring up, who make offers of free advice, which they are not competent to give, not lieing physicians. When you are invited to " write to a woman," ask the simple question, " Is this woman a physician?" You will find that she is not, and does not, and daros not claim to be, a physician. To offer such advice is deceitful. To receive it is dangerous. Prospective mothers should send for a free copy of Dr. Pierce's great x.ooo page book Uio "Common Sens Medical Adviser." A copy in paper-covers will be sent to any address on receipt of 21 one-cent stamps to pay cost of mailing only; in cloth-binding 31 stamps. Ad dress Dr. R. V Pierce, Buffalo, N. Y. CURE GUARAHTEED.
