Tiik ruraor has boon revived that Secrotary Alj-or Is getting ready to retire from the Cabinot. The theory is advanced that his excuse will bo that inasmuch as ho aspires to suc ceed Mr. McMillan in the United States Sonate, his entire time will bo needed to arrange tho contest. Tiik Democrats, those who are laboring so hard to mukc thomselves believe that their platform endorses tho 10 to 1 idea, should remoiuber that in their endorsement of till the past declarations of the party, there are ten committals for sound money to oue of the contrary character. Thk New York Sun is responsible for the statement that Senator Quay has extended the olive branch to Chris. Masree, and will nominate the latter's candidate for Supreme Court. .According to tho same authority, this is to be followed in November next by a special session of the Legislature to make appropriations for public school purposes and for the charitable Insti tutions of the state from funds that have flowed into the state treasury from unexpected sources, and to elect a Senator in Congress to succeed the Hon. M. S. Quay. No predictions as to the outcome of the balloting for Senator is made, except that there will be only one ballot in the joint convention of the two Houses. There are those who believe the Sun is correct. Thk merchant.who knows how to develop a market has before him a direct road to success. His standing and personality are of course factors in the building up of trade, but the controlling agency by which he may secure a paying market for his wares is newspaper publicity, such as the Heham can furnish. With a well conducted establishment, amply and conveniently stocked, a tradesman who shall judiciously and regularly use the columns of a fully accredited newspaper may justly hope to realize his most sanguine expectations. The business announcements in a high grade journal go out like trusty messengers bearing needed informa tion to the purchasing public, whose custom, once secured, the shrewd merchant will expect to retain. THE PRESIDENT'S SUNDAY. llns.r liny For tlio Clilcf Mtitrt-.trn.to at Ilolyoko nnd South Hnilloy. Holyoko, Mass., Juno 10. Sunday for the president was anything but the day of rest that was hoped for. Tho continual crowding of tho curious cltl zons, the Immense jam at tho church In the forenoon and later in tho day an unexpected and totally unprepared for reception In connection with tho baccalaureate oxerclsce at Mt. Tho prosldont was not content with going onco to church, but went twlco, leaving Mrs. MoKlnley in tho hnnds of her lady frlonds on each occasion. It waB an ordorly, do oorous crowd, and hardly a word was npokon by thorn during tho enttro Journey. At the Socond Congregat ional church, which tho Whlttnga at tend, a much larger crowd had assem bled, and It wns only by deviating and entering tho side door that admission was gained. The congregation rose respectfully as tho prosldont entored, and remained standing until ho Bat down. The Btatemonta published to tho effect that Admiral Sampson was 111 and would retire from the command of tho North Atlantic squadron have been authoritatively domed by an officer of his staff as wholly unfounded. On tho contrary. Admiral Sampson is now In bettor health than he has boen at any tlmo since or during the war, and has no Intention of giving up his command. Brighter Prospects Ahead. Saturday was General pay-day in this section, and with their semi monthly stipend the colliery em ployes were greatly encouraged with the announcement thut the collieries would work five days this week. Dur ing the past few weeks mine workers and business meu in Shenandoah have been greatly encouraged by the announcement of better time to be made at the collieries during the summer and fall months. At this season of tho year, when the eoal trade is always tho dullest, tha announcement of the improved working time is indeed encouraging, Th mines in the Slmmokin and UnzUton regions will work six days & week, and this schedule will be maintained indefinitely, and it is not unlikely that within a few weeks the same condition of affairs will exist hare. Notwithstanding that many people constantly decry the anthracite re gion, and predict that it has seen its best days and will never again amoun to anything, the prospects for better times in this region are daily growing better. Reports of prosperity all over the country appear in the metro politan papers, inoreased wages and a domand for labor, and this same con dltion must exist in tho anthracite re gion sooner or later. Wo are juBt beginning to feel the effects of the general improvement in business circles. There is n saying, and a true one, that the coal region is the first to feel the effects of hard times, and the last to reap the benefits of an im oroved market. And bo it is at the present time. Together with the in creased working time, we are reaping the benefits, though slightly, from the prosperity experienced in every branch of trade. May it continue.
