Eight days yet remain of tlio sixty within which the Governor must call a special session of the legislature to fill the vacancy in the United States Senate. Some think Quay may quit and tillow Magee to be elected, but this is doubted. In fact, the friends of Quay say he has no idea of quitting. A number of important subjects were discussed at the meeting of the American Medical Association, now in session at Columbus, Ohio, and at which Dr. J. S. Callen, of town, is in attendance. Before the Section of Materia Medlca and Therapeutics, Dr. Louis J. Lautenbach read a paper on "The Therapeutic Value of Evap orators in the Living Room." Ho spoke of the constitution of the human body being about two-thirds water and as men grow older they lose of the watery element, and that the body needs water internally as well as to all the external surfaces and that while for the former water is taken directly into the stomach, for the latter it is supplied through the medium of the air. That the amount needed in the air by the human body is 75 per cent, of the saturation point, and that whether it falls much below this, or rises above it, tho atmosphere becomes oppressive and life is carried on under great disadvantages. That very little attention is paid to this relative humidity. In the heaters the water pots are not adequate to Bupply the necessary amount of water. Dr. Lautenbach called attention to the fact that air at 32 degrees P. is saturated when it contaius-2 grains of water to the cubic foot, whereas at 70 degrees F. it takes 8 grains to saturate it and that it is impossible for the air to gather up this amount of 6 grains difference per cubic foot while being simply rushed over small surface of water, perhaps 2 or 3 square feet. in order to accomplish this result lie has devised a porous cylindrical pot, containing J a gallon of water, which is tied to each resistor or radt ator throughout the house and which tirnsontH an evanoratintr s-urface of 150 square inohes, the top water sur face being but 15 inches, and by its means he finds the air of the house is rendered more comfortable and healthful and the temperatare is far more equable, violent changes in temperature not occurring. He has observed when this method is adopted, a rapid amelioration in Lead, throat and nose colds, also in eye inflammations, and looks upon it as a therapeutic and hygienic measure too long neglected. He predicts that cold of tho respiratory apparatus will be less common and more easily controlled when the relutivo humidity Is kept close to normal (75 degrees of liumidity.)
