Alter Four-Hours' 1'lulitIiiKtho Hoboln Auntii Skudmlillo A Iloport Tlint Airulnnldo nnd Cutilnot Aro DUuubb Iiik Penoo Overtures. Manila, April 28. General MacAr thnr's division crossed tho Illo Grande yesterday and advanced on Apallt, completely routing tho flower of tho rebel army. Most of tho rebels fled to Apallt station, whero two trains were wnltlng them. They left hur riedly, presumably for San Fernando. Tho towns of San Vlncetto and Apa llt wero simultaneously burned and evacuated by the natives. Twenty prisoners were captured, In cluding a Spaniard. Tho American troops also captured n brass cannon and a quantity of arms and ammuni tion, and the.samo evening they cap tured a Maxim gun on tho railroad. Tho American loss Is one man of tho Montana regiment killed and three of ficers nnd bIx men wounded. The fighting lusted from 1 o'clock until 4. The enemy was very Btrongly entrenched on tho river bank, near both sides of the railroad bridge. Gen eral Whoaton sent Colonel Funston ucross, with two companies of tho Twentieth Kansas regiment, a couple of prlvales swimming tho swift stream, under a galling flro, for tho purpose of guiding the raft. The men crossed In squads of 20 and attacked the loft flank of tho rebels, who scattered like rabbits Into covered ways and trenches. The rest of the regiment was com pelled to cross the, bridge In single file nlong the stringers. All tho wood work and much of the Ironwork had been removed. The First Montana regiment followod the Kansans across tho bridge. The First Nebraska regiment, acting as a reserve, attacked the robels In three lines of trenches, driving them out, killing 16 and wounding many. In the meantime a large body of Filipinos, estimated at no fewer than 3,000, led by General Antonio Luna, on a black charger, that was evidently coming to relnforco the robels who were engaged with the Ncbraskans, ap peared In tho open Hold about two miles to the left. Emerging from the jungle, theenemy formed an open skirmish line nearly two miles In length, with very thick reserves behind. They then advanced at double quick until they were about 2,000 yards from tho American line, when General Wheaton ordered his troops to fire. Tho rebels, who wero evidently un aware that the Americana had crossed the river, broke and ran in the direc tion of Macabelo. The other Filipinos fled toward Apallt station. The heat In the early part of tho af ternoon was torrlflc, but a drenching thunder storm, which came later, greatly refreshed tho Americans. Aguinaldo, according to a represent ative of the Filipino commission hero, is now conferring with Is cabinet con corning peace overtures. The next ad vance of the American troops, it Is as serted, will bring about absoluto sur render of the rebel forces. A feeling of hopolessnoss Is spread ing throughout the Insurgent army. and many of Aguinaldo'B and Luna's officers are returning to work In Man ila. On tho other hand Mablnl and Luna aro seeking in every way to prolong hostilities. Thoy Insist that the re sistance shall continue and attempt to cheer their men with highly colored tales of American disaster. Tho common people, however, are strongly In favor of peace. They pro test against Luna's order that all towns abandoned to tho Americans shall be burned. Hundreds have been rendered homeless through the execution of this order, and the feeling against Luna Is intense. Jose Martinez, an escaped Spanish captain, who had beon compelled, dur ing his captivity, to act as servant to an lnsurgont colonel, says that the rebel army is practically disbanded, and. that the Filipino republic Is a thing of the past. The fighting Is be ing continued, however, by Isolated bands of rebels In tho face of Increas ing desortlons from their ranks. Free PlHs. Send your address to H. E. A gather ing storm that had been threatening all afternoon broke upon Klrksvtlle at 6:20 o'clock last night In all the fury of a cyclone. A path a quartor of a mile wide, and as clean as tho prairie, was swept through the eastern portion of the city and 400 buildings, homes and mercantile, -wero lovelod to tho ground In scattered ruins. In tho heavy rain that followed the people who had escaped turned out to rescue tho injured. For two hours not much was accomplished, as all was confusion, but by 8 o'clock 25 dead bodies had been taken from the ruins. It Is confidently expected that tho list of dead will reach between 50 and 60, If It does not exceod that. Almost a thousand people wero moro or less In jured. Several hours must elapse be fore an adequate estimate of loss of life and property can bo had. Each blanched face reports a now calamity. Tho list of killed In tho cyclono, so far as known at present, follows: William B. Howells, student Ameri can School of Ostopathy; Mrs. W. H. Intense darkness prevailed after the cyclone, and the rescuers were at a dis advantage for n short time. Flro broke out In a dozen places In tho ruins and shed light over the sceno. No attempts were made to extinguish the fires, partly because tho rescuers hud no time and partly because of the need of light. On both sides of tho storm's path tho debris was Dlled hieh and burned fiercely. In all probability a numbor of bodies havo beon Incin erated. The storm first struck tho eastern portion of the city near that part oc- cupieu py the boarding houses of tho students of the American School of Ostopathy, State Normal school and McWard's seminary. It was Just sup per time for the students, and It is thought very probable the list of dead will be well filled with studonts, as a largo number of these boarding houses wero demolished. The three institutions of learning es caped the storm. The storm then went northwest and wiped out Patterson's nursery, pulling tho trees out of tho ground and hurling them through the city. A second edition of tho cyclone fol lowed the first, 20 minutc3 later. It came as an inky black cloud, widely distributed, and covered the whole town, but passed above the houses, doing no material damage. It un doubtedly struck the ground a fow mlios out of Klrksvlllo. A dispatch 'from Newtown. 40 mlle3 northwest of Klrksvlllo, reports that tho cyclone struck that town, destroy ing a number of houses and killing 13 persons. AN IOWA CYCLOXB.
