Lieutenant Gilmora Commanded tho Captured Force. WENT TO RESCUE SPANIAED3 Who Were Surrounded by Four Hundred Insurgents on the Ewt Coast of Luzon. The Rebels Refused to Communicate With Our Officers After the Capture. The Queetioa of What the Filipinos Will Do With Captured Americans Is Causing Gravest Anxiety In Washington. Washington, April U The navy de partment has given oiit the following dispatch from Admiral Dewey: "Tho Yorktown visited Bnler, Luzon, oat coaat of Luson, P. I., April 12 for the purpose of rescuing nnd bringing away the Spanish forces, consisting of 60 soldiers, three officers and two priests, which were surrounded liy 400 insurants. Some of the Insurgents armed with Mauser rifles by na tlves. Lieutenant J. C. Gllraore, while making ambushed were fired upon and captured. Fntp unknown, aa insurgents refnsod to communicate af terward. The following are missing: Lloutenant Gllraore, Chief Quartprmaa lor W. Walton, Coxswain J. Ellsworth, Gunner's Mate II. J. Hygard, Sail makers' Mate Vengit, Seamen W. II. lynders and C. W. Woodbury, Ap prentices D. W. A. Venville and A. J, fetorson, Ordinary Seamen F. Brlso- lose and O. B. McDonald. Landsmen L. T. Edwards, I Andersen, J. Dillon nnn u. a. Morrlseoy." ine uispatch from Admiral Dewey caused mucn excitctnent in naval cir cles as soon as Us contents becamo known. It was received lato in tho day, and considerable delay was occa sioned by the blindness of some of the cipher words. It was Impossible to completely decipher It. and the aster. Isles Indicate the unintelligible words. Lieutenant J. C. Gllmore, tho officer referred to as captured, Is well known In Washington, having been stationed nore for some time and his wlte and family living here. IJawas born in Philadelphia July 10, i8G4. and was ap pointed a naval cadet from Arizona In September, 1S7L Ho reached his present grade of lieutenant In tho year 1SD1. His main service has been on the Monongahela, Marlon, Bancroft, Vesuvius, and Maehlas, besides con sldorablo service on boards. Just a year ago he reported to the St. Paul, then commissioned as an auxiliary cruiser, and served on that vessel, under Captain Sigsbee, throughout tho war. On Jan. 14 last ho -was or dered to tho hospital ship Solace, which was about to sail for Manila, and on arrival there was assigned by Admiral Dewey to the Yorktown. The capture of tho Yorktown's men was discussed with much feeling lu naval circles, Tho misfortune was felt with added keenness, as the navy has prided Itself thus far on Immunity from roversos. The admiral's dispatch was the first knowledge the depart ment had that the Yorktown had gono on this special mission to rolleve tho Spanish garrison at Baler. That the capture should have been effected while tho American forces were on a mission of mercy toward the Spaniards, rainer tnan in tne prosecution of tho campaign, led to tho belief that Spain would have no further ground for questioning the good faith with which the Americans were seeking to relievo tho condition of the Spanlsn prisoners. Although tho dispatch gave no In dication that Lieutenant Gllmore and his men had lost their lives, yet great anxiety was aroused by tho mystery surrounding their fate while In the hands of an uncivilized enemy. This is tno nrst capture or any Amorlcans, military or naval, so that It is un known how the Insurgents will treat our men. If civilized methods were pursued an exchange could be quickly effected, as General Otis has a largo number of Filipino prisoners, but the Insurgents have been averse thus far to oxchanglng Spanish prisoners, and this raises a question as to what they will do with the Yorktown's men. Tho purpose of officials here Is to spare no effort to secure the speedy releaso of our men. Fresh Hotter nnd Kegs, Choice Steals Dally. From the Miners' Journal. James J. Frailer, the Wanamakernf Klmn. audoah, was a visitor to the Journal office yesterday. Here is another example of tho success which follows the exhibition of enter prise aud liberal businoss methods. Mr. Francy's capacity fur businoss is remarkable, in fact has surprised many men, who did not cujoy his personal acquaintance. Ho is always ready with new projects aud If ao was given a free lauco Shenandoah would long bo enjoying business enterprises that would add much to her prosperity, but where he would havo spent thousands of dollars he has been so hampered by his ucichbors and by the local authorities, that he has been forced to curtail tho amonnt of his invest ments. Shenandoah is evidently too small for such a man. Mr. Franey should como to Pottsvillo where ho might not be ass.sted. but where at least ho would not be handi capped In his efforts to increase tho town's business prosperity. Accidents come with distressing frequency ou tho farm. Cuts, bruises, stings, snrains. Dr. Thomas' Eclectric Oil relieves tho pain instantly. Never safe without It. Fttsville's Auditors.
