Deputy Coroner Blssell, of Mahanoy City, last night opened an inquest on tho deaths of John Stephen and Stove Sllcski, who, with nine others, wero injured by explosions of gas in tho Mahanoy City colliery soveral weeks ago. Mino Inspector Stoin was in attendance at the Inquest. George Gilgore, Inside foroman, said he told all tho men in tho part of tho mine whero tho deceased worked to go homo, becauso they wore short of plank. He thought tho deceased went home, until he learned afterwards that they went into breast 09 to find plank, and there set off the gas. Firo Boss Edward Golden sworo that ho told the mon not to go into breast GS any more, as it was not safe. The breast had been abandoned about ten days beforo the explo sion. Goldou, referring to Sileski, said I told him I would knock his brains out if ho went in that breast again." This was prior to tho explosion. With tho exception of the battery door, tho breast was brattlcod to pre vent men from entering it. The air was cut off by tho closing of tho heading. Witness said ho did not consider himself overworked as firo boss, and every place ho traveled In tho mine 'was safe. Michael Kurtz, a driver, testified that four or fivo minutes elapsed between the first and second explosion. When asked when, beforo tho explosion, he had seen tho Inspector In the mine, witness said from two to four months, and that ho visited the mine three or four days after. Mine Inspector Stein stated that tho wit- uess' evidence in this respect was not correct Deputy Coroner Bissell said the Inspector could take the staud after tbo witness, and bo put under oath. Mr. Stein replied that ho is always a sworu olllcer. Barney Sloan was called and said, I was at my breast when the first explosion occurred I called my butty down. I saw lights whero tho loaders sit. I went to the lights and met young Brcnnan at tho door. I asked what had happened. The boy laughed as two men ran out through tho doorway. I went to the doorway, saw a blaze, and was knocked un conscious. Tho two men who set off the gas wero told to go homo that morniug. I never saw the Inspector in my breast." At this point tho inquest was adjourned to meet again at tho call of the Coroner. TROUBLESOME PAY CHECK. John Kovlck Finds Himself u l'rlsoner by ailstuke. The Herald yesterday made a brief mention of the arrest of a man at tho Potts villo office of tho P. & R. C. & I. Co. for presenting a pay check alleged to have been stolen from a man In Mahanoy City. Later developments present tho case in tho light of a comedy of errors. It appears that John Kovlck, of Mahanoy City, while intoxicated, gavo his pay check to a friend fur safe keeping. After becoming sober Kovlck failed to recollect what he had done with the check, and concluded that It had been stolen. He went to Justice May's ofllco aud a warrant was sworn out with the name of tho defendant in blank. At tho same time the P. & U. office at Pottsville was notified to be on the lookout for anybody who might present the check. Subsequent to tho swearing out of tb warrant tbo check was returned to Kovick by tho friend in whose keeping it bad been placed. Kovick was so delighted over tho recovery of the check that ho did not thiuk of notifying Justice May of the return, aud the warrant.and orders issued remained in force. Yesterday Kovick concluded to go to Potts ville and collect tho money. When he pre sented tho check at the P & It, office tho pay clerk concluded that tho thief had bee trapped, Kovick was detalued by conversa tion until an officer could be secretly sent for, and then taken to jail, where he was kept in a cell pending the notification of the Malm noy City authorities and tho arrival of a officer. Mcauwhilo Kovick was mystified Tho more emphatic tho prisoner became in his assertions that ho was the genuine Kovick, the more tho jail olli clals were amused. And such was the case with Constable' Lcitcnbergcr, who arrived at the Jail to tako the prisoner to Mahanoy City. Lciteuberger was unacquainted with Kovick, and when tho latter becamo des perate oyer the situation the constable on eluded that his prisoner was disposed to givo trouble, so the hand cull's were called into piny. Kovick protested continuously durUi tho Journey homo that ho was the real Kovick, but Lultenberger only smiled and occasionally retorted, "You're giving mo Spanish war story." It was not until the manacled Kovlck was presented beforo Jus tice May last night that tho comedy ended and then all but Kovlck laughed until thel side ached. Kovick did not Join in tb merriment, because he was obliged to pay all the costs, and he went home with a very small balance due him ou the check. McGlnnU Out of Dunger.
