John and 1'nttl Zellner, who on Saturday murdered Attorney Vetonhaver. nt lloytsville, mid nf.er entreiK'hhiK them Reive In their house, near Hint place. defied nrreitt, were finally taken yester- uny morning, nml are now in ini at Howling ilrcen. Peaceable methods finnllv prevailed in the capture, although it is doubtful If the capture would have been effected except for the fact that the tfeltner Here nearly out of nmtuuuttlon, nnd they knew surrender wan the only method of saving IhemKelvei from nn Infuriated mob. The 'nllltln had planned to make a fttntul about daylight nnd strict picket duty wan maintained by the Hloomdale HillfH nil night, the men being stationed around the house at short intervals and at HUtllclent dbitanee from the house to prevent the Zelttiers from picking the men off. Several narrow escapes from bullets happened during the evening, for the Zeltuers, bVing shnrpihooter, were picking out nnd shooting ut everyone venturing within 500 yards. Lx-Sheriff Itiggs, of Howling Itreen. went to lloytsville during the night l-j see Attorney Hood, whom the Zeltners wished to consult. Hood promised to go to the house nt daylight, but when the time came he refused to go, evi dently fearing the Zeltners would shoot any one approaching the place. At .:.vj yesterday morning ex-Sheriff Itiggs, accompanied by a neighbor named Brown, htarted toward the house. They walked the distance alone. The Zelt n6rs offered no resistance to their ap proach, and they were admitted to the house. The Zeltners seemed not disposed at lirst to give up, and stated that they feared the mob which remained outside the militia lines. After half an hour's talk they agreed, and Sheriff Kings bury was notified. He at once made arrnngements to afford the Zeltners the protection of the militia. Sirs. John Zeltner, who was in the house with her three children during thj trouble, wus not molested, nnd is there yet. Developments since the arrest of the Zeltners indicate that they not only de liberated over the bloody defiance of law, but also prepared for it, having a large stock of ammunition in their resi dence, two miles from Hoyts Corners. IS. II. cstcuhaver, ex-solicitor o' North Baltimore, had been their at torney in numerous cases and sued them for his fees. The jury and witnesses had been sworn before Justice Burgoon, in the township house at Hoyts Corners, in Westenhavcr's suit to recover fees, when Pnul Zeltner demanded some pa pers of Westenhnver and attempted to 'take them from his pocket. John Zelt ner then joined in demanding the papers and immediately- fired the shot that kill ed 'Westenhaver. As the Zeltners had their horses rendy for mounting nnd escape It is thought that they had arranged to get AVesten haver into a fight for the purpose of "doing him," although they did not give the victim time to make demonstrations towards them. The Zeltners kept up their firing until they mounted their horses and continued as hundreds of citizens pursued them for two miles to their residence. After they reached their house they kept up constant fire the rest of the day and during Satur day night. They had a large stock of ammunition stored nt home. While the feeling is intense around North Baltimore on nccount of the mur der of Westenhnver, it is equally in tense nround Hoyts Corners on account of the killing of their neighbor, Clarence Weidmcyer, who was with the sheriffs posse Saturday night. When Weidi meyer fell volley after volley was poured into the crowd from the upper story of the Zeltner house, and the Zeltners knew that they were firing on their neighbors ns well as on the sheriff and his deputies. Before the arrival of troops during the night a cannon used In shooting oil tanks. In case of fire and a quantity of nitro-glycerine had been secured, so that there would have been trouble after sunrise if the troops had not arrived. The Zeltner brothers and their fam ilies were no doubt saved by the prompt arrival of troops under the orders of Governor Bushnell. "The troops stood between the firing from the house and the enraged crowd, nnd not only cap tured the desperadoes, but nlso protected them from violence all the way from the southern boundary of this county to the jail here, a distance of over 20 miles, with excitement nt the highest pitch all along the route. It Is stated as further proof of de liberation that the Zeltners transferred their farm and other property on Fri day to Mrs. John Zeltner. Discovered by a Woman. Another great discovery has been made. and that too, by a lady in this country. "Dis ease fastened its clutches upon her and for seven years she withstood its severest tests, but her vital organs were nndermiued and death seemed imminent. For three months she coughed incessantly, and could not sleep, bhe finally discovered a way to recovery, oy purchasing of us a bottle of Dr. King's New Discovery for Consumption, and was so much relieved on taking first dose, that she slept all night ; and witu two bottles, bas been at solutely cured. Though apparently their form was much smaller than that of the Americans, they had an Immense advantage In position and In oppor tunity to retreat. General MacArthur's ndvance guard, the Third artillery and the Twentieth Kansas regiment, joined General Wheaton's brigade shortly after Ma llnta was taken, approaching along the Novallche road westerly. The soldiers were much oxhausted, and there were several prostrations from the heat, which was Intense. The dead and wounded were collected In tho shade of the trees and carried on stretchers by Chinese across the river to the train. The Second Orogon reglmont en countered a thousand Filipinos wost of Mallnta. who were retreating from Mnlabon. The enemy had taken up a position behind four rows of Intrench ments. but was driven out after nn hour's heavy firing. One Oregonlan was killotl and five wounded. The Third artillery, acting as In fantry, with two guns of the Utah ar tillery, and the Kansans, had a sharp fight east of Mallnta. The Americans had but slight loss. Five Filipinos were found dead and several were taken prisoners. General MacArthur's division Is ad vancing upon Polo along the railroad. As the bridge Is destroyed and tho river cannot be forded tho advance is temporarily checked. In the lighting west of Mallnta the Orogonlans captured a Spaniard, but he denied that he was taking part In tho battle. Catoroelsone of the most Interesting places In Mexico Here are found the cus toms of Mexico in their purity, unaffected by the InllueiKX) of the stranger Difficult of nocess, the town can be ranched only by horsebHok or on foot. Catoroa lias seldom been visited by any except those making business trips The ride up the mountains Into the town Is something, once accom plished, always to be remembered, partly front Its element of personal peril, but more because of the beauty of tbe land scape encountered at every turn. Glancing down as you near your Journey's end. you catch a gleam of tho white walls of Im Catorce outlined against tbe green of the mountain side. Thousands of feet below shimmer the waters of a mountain stream. The shifting coloring of the mountains as light and shade chase each other over their rugged expanse, the browns and greens of the valley below and the hills In the hazy distance aro "beautiful exceedingly." The Ileal de Catoroa Is built on the side of a ravine near tbe top of the range, and has a varying population of from 8,000 to 40,000, as the mines are paying well nr poorly. Hero are found nil varieties of silver ore from carbonates to refractory ore assaying $15,000 to the ton. Catotve has a fine cathedral, richly decorated, and a pretty plaza, the only level sot in the place. To use a railroad phrase. It is n combination of cut and 1111, so that to tumble Into It on one side nnd out on the other would bo extremely disastrous. The streets nre neatly paved and run up and down hill, many of them at an angle of 45 degrees. Altogether this is ono ot the show places of Mexico. Modern Mexico DANdER AVERTED. Tf a man should cross a deadly snake In his n.ithwav. he would nuicklv crush it beneath his heel before it could sink its ooisonous fanes into his flesh. He would not step out of the way and temporize with the dangerous reptile. And yet how many peo nle are there who temporize with a still more deadly enemy consump tion. Like a silent serpent, it glides along almost unno ticed. First a cold, or tore throat, then a slight cough, then ca tarrh, then bronchitis, then bleeding from the lungs and finally death. The way to crush out the threatenme evil is to fortify the system and purify the nlood with Dr. Pierce's Golden Medical Dlscov ery. Every weakness and abnormal condi tion that precedes consumption is cured by this non-alcoholic remedy. At the first sign of derangement of stomach, liver and blood, look out I It is only a question of time until tbe lungs will be attacked throuRh the impure blood, and then the danger will be most deadly. It should be known to every sick person that Dr. R. V. Pierce will give carefully con sidered, fatherly, protessional advice by mail to all who write him at Buffalo, 1ST. Y.
