It looks as though the Philadelphia newspapers are in a combine with the companies manufacturing Altering machines. Spkaking of banquets why not get up one for tile special benefit of the Democratic factional leuders iu this county. A WiiiKKSUAWtK man kidnapped a fellow who owed him money. It isn't a good plan. You have to pay money for the recalcitrant's keep. Mystkiiious conferences were held in Philadelphia by the leaders of the factions in the Senatorial battle within the past two or three days. Those who profess to know say it will develop in the election of a Senator, Let us hope so. FoiisiEit Senator Coylk testified before the Bribery Investigating Committee at Harrisburg yesterday and emphatically denied the charges made against him. Mr. Coyle took particular pains to deny that he had introduced Archbishop Ryan's name into his discussion over the Jury bill with Representative Engler. and declared that story the most cruel aud unfounded of any that had been told and claims there is a conspiracy against him. Convicted Lebanon Editors At the close of the recent spirited battle between the Quay and anti- Quay factions in Lebanon county for "a. state Senator, the editors of two Lebanon newspapers were arrested for libel at the instance of Mr. Van Valkenberg, of the Business Men' League, who alleged that he had been grossly libeled in a putlication. The trial came on last week and resulted in the conyiction of the editors, the evidence being absolutely conclusive that the statements made concerning Mr. Van Valkenberg were without the slightest foundation. The fact has, since the trial, been developed that the libelous article was furnished to the editor, or to one of the reporters on his paper, by detective supposed to be in the em ploy of the Quay machine, and that the detective vouched for the truth of the statements contained in the libel ous article. If the latter avertments of the convicted men are true, then the unhappy machine editors are the victims of a detective in the employ of the machine whose interests the aforesaid editors were so faithfully serying. If the editors aforesaid should feel revengefully inclined they have it in their power to make things decidedly uncomfortable for the detective wh led them into the difficulty. To many people are apt to forget that there is a law on the statute books of Pennsylvania, which was placed there for the protection of editors against certain class of designing men wh seek to strike cowardly blows against others uuder cover. One provision of that law which is in full force and effect is as follows : "Any person who wilfully states, delivers or transmits Dy any means wnaiever 10 mo roan. ager, editor, publisher or reporter 01 any news paper, magazine, publleatlon, periodical or serial lor publication therein any libelous state ment concerning anv nerson or corooration.und thereby secures' tbe sctual publication of the same, is tiereby declared tfullty of misdemeanor, and upon conviction shall be sentencrd to pay a fine not exceeding 1600, and undergo Imprison ment for a period not exceeding two years, or either or both, at the discretion of the court." Under that law an editor or pub lisher who is made the victim of any designing person has it in his power to at least punish the person who de ceives him and leads him into trouble. It is evident that the Lebanon editors would not have published the libel ous article if they had believed it to be false. That this is the case is shown by their statement that they sought to verify the truth of the allegations contained in It, and were assured In the most positive manner by the detective that the artiole con talned nothing but the truth. Whether or not the deteotive will be prosecuted under the above law depends entirely on the oonvleted editors. Many women suffer untold agony and misery because the nature of their disease is not correctly understood. They have been led to believe that womb trouble or female weakness of some sort is responsible for the many ills that beset womankind. Neuralgia, nervousness, headache, puffy or dark, circles under the eyes, rheumatism, a j dragging pain or dull ache in the back, weak ness or bearing-down sensation, profuse or scanty supply of urine with strong odor, frequent desire to pass it with scalding or burning sensation, sediment in it after stand ing in bottle or common glass for twenty-four hours, are signs of kidney and bladder trouble. The above symptoms are often attributed by the patient herself or by her physician to female weakness or womb trouble. Hence, so many fail to obtain relief, because they are treating, not the disease itself, but a reflection of the primary cause, which is kidney trouble. In fact, women as well as men are made miserable with kidney and bladder trouble and both need the same remedy. Dr. Kilmer's Swamp-Root is the great dis covery of the eminent kidney and bladder specialist, and is easy to get at any drug store for fifty cents or one dollar. To prove its wonderful merits you may have a sample bottle and book telling all about it, both sent absolutely free by mail, Kindly mention Shenandoah Herald and send your address to Dr. Kilmer Si Co, Binghamton, N. The first report, w libit came from New York, was received at .'( o'clock In the af ternoon, and was circulated In the de partments just before the close for the day. The- niiliotmceinciit seemed to fol low untmnlly the oilier cablegrams ot the day stating that the venerable states- 11111ns condition and grown worse, and there was it universal expression of re gret, and in many cases personal stress, over the news. The contradiction of the first report did not arrive until 8:30 o'clock. It came in the shape of n positive state incut from Snntlugo, made In" the knowl edge that the report of tie ex-senator's death had been circulated. This diS' natch was Immediately given as wide cir culation In the city n It was possible for It to receive nt that hour. Secretary Hay was placed in possession of a copy of the dispatch, as were nwo Mr. Slier- man s family. "A most marvelous coiv dltlon of nfluirs." remarked the sccre tary. lie then proceeded to express his great relief that the first news was not confirmed. The news of the reported death of Mr. Sherman took ninny persons, friends nnd others, to his house on K street. Among others who were congregated there when the newspaper reporter call cd were the two former private secrc tarles of Mr. Sherman, Mr. Babcock and Mr. Vallc, as well as Miss Kate Wlllack, a niece, nnd Mrs . Colonel Charles Hoyt, whose husband was a consln of ex-Senator Sherman's. They and others present read the dispatch saying the cx-senator was still alive with tromulous ioy. The readme of the glad message had scarcely been concluded by those pres ent than Mrs McCallum, the adopted daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Sherman, burst into the room, accompanied by the daughter of General Miles. They had received the news through a telephone message while nt General Miles' house. and hurried over to impart it to the rest of the family. 'It has been a trying day," said Mrs. McCallum, "but nil Is well again." Indeed there were heartfelt rejoicings and thanksgivings on the part of all those who had assembled at the house when they realized It was true that the Invalid was belter and might yet be re stored to them. Mrs. Sherman was the one person of the cx-secretury's household who suf fered neither from the first announce ment or rejoiced over the second. She was not Informed of either. Mrs. Sher man has been quite 111 from a paralytic attack for several months, nnd had never been Informed even of Mr. Sher man's serious illness, for fear of Its ef fect on her. It was felt, when the news of his death came, thnt It would have to be broken to her, but all hesitated to make the announcement. It was ulti mately decided to postpone Uie sad duty until today. She was saved the shock. Fearing the harm which might re sult from a sudden change from the climate ot the West Indies to a north ern latitude, the family are considering the advisability of having Mr. Sherman taken to Tampa, Fla., for a time. After remaining there until he is well on the road to recovery he can be brought to Washington, stopping possibly for some days at Fortress Monroe, so as tosbe- come gradually accustomed to Jthe. change In temperature. He first was received by the senate, whore he made a brief ad dress, expressing pleasure at being able to visit the body. He then went to the house, where a similar program was cur ried out. Uaeh branch took a recess af ter General Miles had addressed them, during which the members were pre sented to the visitor. Just after leaving the state house one of the afternoon pa1 pers, containing the announcement that Mr. Sherman had died, was shown to General Miles. Unfortunately tho con trudlctory report was not received for some hours later, and while General Miles expressed his intention of carrying out the- day s program Mrs. Miles re quested that her numerous engagements should be cancelled. This was done nt once, and she return ed to the hotel very much depressed over the sad news. A few hours later uewspuper representative brought her the welcome news t:hut Mr. Sherman was still alive. The sudden change from sor row to Joy almost stnggered Mrs. Miles, nnd with tears in her. eyes she thanked the reporter for the good news, saying that Mr. Sherman hud been a father to her for years, In the meantime General Miles stood the test ot hours of handshaking at the Algonquin club previous to the banquet in the same club house. In the midst of the festivities the corrected dispatch was shown him.nnd ie at once expressed his great joy at the good uows and beg ged that the dispatch be sent at once to Mrs. Miles. This had already been done, and he again gave his attention to tiie numerous sieeches. In his own speech, already delivered, he had de clared his belief that Mr. Sherman was still alive.
