The great snow blockade on the Denver and Itlo G ramie railroad In the canon of the Grand river has been broken. The comiNiny Is now accepting freight and paeeenger bunlneM for Grand Junction nnd the west. The blockade has cost the railway company tens of thousands of dollars, but at no time did the fight cease, notwithstanding the great dif ficulties presented by mighty winds and great blankets of snow which fill ed the air for nearly a week pt. Three rotarlee and nearly 1.000 shovelers, as sisted by a dor.en powerful steam en gines, were necessary to break through the avalanches and clear the track. The Denver and Itlo Grande has known nothing to compare with this great storm since President Jeffrey assumed charge of the system. Three special trains were sent east from Glenwood Springs yesterday, bringing all the pas sengers that had been detained there, and they arrived In Denver last night. The Colorado Midland has encounter ed fresh dltllcultles, the wind drifting and filling cuts that had been oleared. Besides, the cold Is so Intense that men cannot work long at a time clearing the tracks. Until the Midland Is open- ?h tralr Rio Grande tracks. After weeks of toil the Colorado and Southern has been forced to abandon the effort to open the "High Line" be tween Como and Leadvllle. A high wind Monday night filled the cuts with snow, qnd the rotary was returned to Como, to remain until the weather moderates. The line between Denver and Como will be kept open. This com pany Is having no trouble with Its road to the south, trains running practically on schedule. It lb estimated that 60.000 sheep In southern Colorado are dying of cold and hunger. Many flocks have been abandoned by the herders. "Another 21 hours of weather such as has been sweeping over Wyoming since Feb. 1 and BO per cent of the cat tle of Wyoming will be dead," said B. Frank Hunter today. "The winter is without exception the worst that has ever been experienced In that part of the country. There Is not a shrub or bunch of grass of any kind visible be tween this city and western Wyoming, along the railroad, and It Is almost Im possible for the cattle to find anything to eat. The loss will be almost Incal culable, as thousands of cattle are down already. "Those left standing- are In the last stages of sufferlne; from cold and hunger. They have reached the semi conscious state, when they begin to look for something as a support. From the car windows the cattle can be seen leaning back against the fences. Of course my Information is only regard ing the cattle along the railroad line, but It Is highly probable that the same condition exists all over the state.' AG0NCILL0 IS SAFE.
