Tiiypiiy.TH Association Files Objections Ullh llio Controller. - The Taxpayers Association, through its executive oillcor, W. L. Sheafer, has ad dressed a lengthy letter to Controller II. J. Muldoon, objecting to tho expensive ad ministration of tho Coroner's olllce, and the excosslvo fees paid deputies and tho large number of unnecessary and useless inquests. The grand total oxpenso for tho past six years was $30.432.01 and tho average for tho past three years is $0,000 per year. Since the Coroner's salary has been increased to $2,000 a year, thcro has bcoii no decreaso in the compensation of tho deputies, which now amounts to about $in00. Shenandoah and Mahanoy City hoads tho listof inquests held, with 40 and 43 respectively, while Pottsvllle has just half that number, being the third ou tho list. Tho cost of oacli Inquost as returned by the Coroner is composed of tho following items ' Viewing body, $5.50; summoning jurors, $2 75; examining witnesses, 25 cents each, aud mileage, 10 ceuts a mile, for delivering returns, making a cost of about $12.00 per in- luest. Jurors fees aro $0.00 per inquest, allowing but one day to each juror for each inquest. Tho Association says the law lu this respect has been violated, as the Coroner is entitled to tulleauo in but one case, aud no allowance enn be made for stenographers, carriaga hire or serving subpoenas. In six cases lcturned from Shenandoah' In March, 1893, mileago Is charged at $3 80 per case, an excess of $1.20 in each case, or $7.20. Othor charges in mileage are oxcessivo. There are a number of cases in which in quests aro held aud which nro noticeably un necessary. The Association supports the position held by Minn Inspector Stein in reference to un necessary inquests, and says the "questlous of salaries of deputy Coroners will .bear scrutiny. These officers beiug principally paid fixed salaries, the number of Inquests held will prove as a guide. Some of the present salaries aro excessive if rated at $5 per inquest, and the amounts paid last year leave no work to be porformed by tho Cor oner himself. The question of jurors' fees. while it may be no direct loss to tho county, is frequeutly arranged to be of benefit to the deputy." PERSONAL MENTION. Dr. G. M.
