The situation In the Philippines causes considerable anxiety In otllclal circles here. Dis patches from deneral Otis stating' that It was to the Insurgents that the Span ish General Hlos surrendered Hollo, nnd the uncertainty as to what has foltowed this surrender. Indicates the possibility of serious complication be tween the American forces and those of the Insurgents, and leaves the gov ernment here In doubt. The arrival of Colonel Potter at Hollo after the In surgents had taken possession may have resulted In a conflict between the American and the Insurgent forces. The most Importnnt dispatch from General Otis was as follows: "Sent Colonel Potter on fast vessel to Hollo on the 24th to communicate with the Spanish General Rlos. -The latter evacuated on the evening" of thi 21th, and Potter arrived 33 hours late. The Insurgents took possession of the city on the 26th, and Potter found Agulualdo's flag Hying. Cannot now report the probable result. Will not hear from there for four days, as there Is no cable communication. The Span ish forces have evacuated alt stations In the southern Islands except Zam boanga, Mindanao, by orders, as they say, from Madrid." The evacuation by the Spaniards of all the Philippine ports, as reported by Oeneral Otis, although doubtless In spired by a desire to secure their safety by concentration, undoubtedly has done much to complicate the problem al ready presented to the war department of extending the military Jurisdiction of the United States over the Islands. It will now be necessary to expedite the execu'lrn of the original plans, and It may be fully expected that within a week Important events will have happened In the Philippines. It Is pre sumed that General Otis will demand the surrender of Hollo Into his hands, and this demand may at once raise the Issue between the Insurgents and our own government of possession of the 'islands. The province of Hollo Is st down in the official directories bb having a pop ulation of 472,000, and It Is the second seaport of Importance In the Philip pine group. It Is located on a river navigable for vessels of IB feet draught, so that very few of our gunboats would be available to, assist the troops In case It should be necessary to take forcible possession of the city. The Spaniards have chosen a strong place for the concentration of their troops In the town of Zamboanga, which Is strongly fortified and possess ed of considerable natural strength from a defensive point of view. It Is not doubted that they will be able to maintain themselves for nn Indefinite period of time against the Insurgents, presuming that they are not cut off from obtaining supplies from the sea, The town Itself has a population of 21,. 000. DEL AWAKE'S ATTORNEY GENERAL ArmioH Tor u 1'lrnt llonrco Vortllot unci tlio l'rlHiinui'H Counxol Mnkus n lli'llllitnt I'll' I "or the Acquittal of Ills Clluttt. San Francisco, Dec. 29. Yesterday was the most Interesting day of tho Uotkln case since the trial of the wo man for the murder of Mrs. Dunnlnir commenced. The proceedings opened with an argument hy Attorney General White, of Delaware, for the prosecu tion. Mr. White addressed the Jury quietly, and proceeded to review the testimony hrought out during the trial. He called attention to the chain of elrcumotanclnl evidence against Mrs. Uotkln, and said that If the Jury be lieved the evidence of the witnesses for the prosecution then Mrs. Uotkln must he convicted of murder In the first de gree. Mr. White dwelt upon the awful ness of the crime and the unsuspected, defenseless condition of tho victims. Ills argument lasted all through the morning, and during Its progress Mrs. Botkln listened most attentively. As Mr. White concluded she leaned her head on her arms and seemed to be greatly affected. At the nfternoon session Attorney George Knight mudo the argument for the defense. Mr. Knight's reputation as an orator and ability as a criminal lawyer attracted an enormous crowd to the court room. Mr. Knight talked for nearly three hours and endeavored to convince the Jury of the weakness of the prosecution's case and the lack of a motive for committing such a crime by Mrs. Dotkln. Mr. Knight urged the Jury not to be Influenced by tne outcry caused by the recent ac quittal of Walter Itosser, the Tennes see soldier, who murdered an Inoffen sive citizen of San Francisco, nnd re ferred to the Mnyhrlck and Dreyfus cases as Instances of suffering of In nocent people because of nubile onln- lon. Mr. Knight denounced Dr. Blshon. the Dover physician, who attended the poisoned woman, and was most bitter In his condemnation of the methods of the San Francisco police. Mr. Dunning, tne nusiiand of one of the murdered women, also came In for a share of the attorney's vitriolic sentences. Particu lar attention wns called to the fact that Mrs. Ilotkln, the alleged author of the anonymous letters that were mail ed in San Francisco In June, was In Eureka. Cal., all of that month, and could not have possibly mailed the let ters here. Mrs. Grace Harris, who Identified Mrs. Uotkln as the woman who purchased the handkerchief which was found In the box of poisoned candy, was denounced as an untruthful nnd dissolute woman. The testimony of th candy girls who identified Mrs. Dot kln as the woman who purchased the candy was also vigorously attacked by the lawyer. In speaking about the alleged pur chase of arsenic by Mrs. Botkln on June 1 Knight sought to show the Im probability of her keeping the poison yntll July 31, when she bought the oandy. lie did not. however, directly deny the purchase of arsenic. Writing Expert Ames, who came here from New York and testified that Mrs. Botkln was the nuthor of the anony mous letters nnd also addressed tin wrapper on the candy box, was de nounced as coming here and testifying for the prosecution because he was paid to testify that way. Mr. Knight lay great stress upon the faot that arsenlp found in the candy was n lump form, whereas Druggist Grey testified that MrB. Botkln purchased powdered arsenic. He aim said there was no legal proof that Mrs. Dunning had died of arsenical poisoning. An autopsy, he said, wax necessary to prove tins cause of death in uny poisoning case. Mr. Knight contended that the prosecu tion had failed to show a motive of Mrs, Botkln's part for the t-onimlslon of the crime. It had been shown dur Ing the trial that Mrs. Uotkln had per sistently refused to assist her husband to procure a divorce, and this showed that she had no desire to marry Mr. Dunning. Mr. Knight closed with a brilliant peroration, In which he described Mrs. Botkln as nn Innocent, persecuted wo. man, and he urged the Jury to acquit her of the horrible suspicion that had tested on her through the machinations of the police. Today Attorney McGowan opened his argument for, the defense, and District Attorney Hosmer will close for the prosecution. It Is expected that the case will be given to the Jury tomorrow morning. The leak was small when he found It, but he knew that the action of the water would enlarge It long before morning, and wash away the entire embankment, inundate the country and destroy his own and thou sand of homes.
