HIGHLY INSTRUCTIVE PAPER Prof. Ihlseng Explains the Various (lasses Manufacture and Their Properties, and Shows How to Detect Their Presence. An Interesting and instructive lecture was delivered at Hazleton on Tuosday ovenlng, by Prof. M. O. Ihlseng, Dean of tho Penn sylvania State College, School of Mines Tho subject selecled was "Timbering and Caupcx of Mine Explosions" and it is one of such great Importance tp tho men who earu their living by working underground and are exposed to dangers which a practical know ledge can avoid, we have decided to repro duce a short synopsis of the lecture. Tho spoaker said in referring to gases and tho causes of explosions, is well to demonstrate by experiment the propeitiesof the gases and their behavior when ignited, also tho various forms of explosions and their causes. Among all the destructive ageccies.said tlie Professor, less attention is paid to tlie presence of white uamp than should be. This is the most violent poison known to tho chemist and is always present in haulage ways and inlets immediately after an explosion. This es causes the death of members of tlie rescuing parties and should bo carefully guarded against. After an explosion tlio men should remain in their room or make their escape by tlie return air way. A blue cap tn the light 11I the lamp indicates the gas, as well as tho presence of fire damp and the equally dangerous stink damp. fire damp or ordinary mine gas is com posed of carbon and hydrogen. It corresponds to tho volatile const! tuants of bituminous coal and has been freed from the original soft coal by pressure and violent changes produced at the time that the rocks were bent and folded to give rise to tho several coal basins of the anthracite district. No coal mine is freo from this gas. Choke damp is composed of carbonic acid and I will show that it ex tinguishes flame and is heavier than air. Stink damp is sulphuretted hydrogen pro duced by the decomposition of the sulphur balls in tho gob. Wherever recognized it may be taken as a warning preceding spon taneous combustion and ilie. Black damp is mine gas having n deficiency in oxygeu and will therefore neither support life nor feed a flame, The Professor gave a series of interesting experiments showing how eagerly oxygen will attack various substances. Watch springs were burned in tho air and other forms of its destructive properties demonstrated, Tho various gases were also manufactured and exploded. The speaker then resumed his discourse. "Mark Twaiu once said he "was never afraid of the powder but of the match, so au explosion cannot ensuoif the gas is not Ignited by a naked flame, a blown out shot, or coal dust Ignited by any of the various sources of (lames. "As a comparison regarding explosions and timbering I will say that out of ten thousand mluers killed in the state since 1870, 000 only wero killed by explosion ami very nearly 4,000 by the fall of roof and coal. Care in tiuiberiug aud a watchfuluoss of the condi tion of tho roof can alone reduce the number of accidents from the latter cauho. For this reason special attention must bo given to tlio correct position of tho timbers aud tho best methods of withdrawing them. Timber is placed not so much for tho purpose of holding up tho roof as for the purpose of showing by its bending, tho danger which threatens. All Mocks of roof and coal near slips aud all scaly roofs should be closely timbered so that each loose fragment snail be held in place. It is also to bo remembered that it is not poor roofs which aro daugerous but it is the so-called good roof which docs the damage A poor root is known as such and is carefully watched, but no precautions ire taken when a roof is regarded as sound. There is, howover, no known rock, parti cularly in this highly disturbed anthracite region, which can be regarded as secure and self-supporting, It is evident, therefore, how important It becomes to the miner to prop his good roof." A contention has arisen between County Controller C. A. Snyder and Deputy Coroner I!. C. Guldln, of Mine'sville, as to whether a deputy coroner is entitled to more than the salary fixed when his appointment is made, should he bold a post mortem examination. The Controller contends he is entitled to the salary only. Dr, Quldin contends otherwise, and it is probable a case stated may be pre sented to court to lnwe the question deter mined judicially.
