News paper agitation doesn't seem to bu effective. Not only aro business men inter ested in securing an equalization of tonnage rate for anthracite and bitu minous coal from tho railroads, but several prominent individual coal operators and many leading manufac turing concerns of Now York and Philadelphia are back of tho move ment. These people realize that dis crimination against hard coal inter feres with tlioir business by causing u decrease in sales. More work in this region means a corresponding in crease in business for thuui. The agitation of this question is to n-sult hi tho nppoiiitniunt ot a com mittee to interview tho coal carrying companies, with u view to equalizing the rates of tonnage. Tlio rate at which bituminous coal is hauled to Kustern points is entirely too low. If tt was raised to enable tho anthracite operators to get their product into the market at about the same rates, hard coal would bo in greater de mand and there would bo more work ing duyu at tho niiiioH in this region. It np Iiearg eptalillnhrd beyoiid a duubt tli.it the reports of an uprising tn the re public of Santo Domlnco nsalnst the power of President lleureatix nre enr rot. The Initial blow wan (truck at Monte Crlsto. on the bordcra of Haytl, the nearest Dominican port to Cnpe Ilaytlen, the revolutionists being trans ported by the Clyde line steamer Fanlta. It would appear that the Fnnlta, In stead of having on board onlv 17 Domlnlcnna, probably had 150 on board. Tho Kanlla anhed here on June 1, half empty, bringing from New York provisions for the navy, which she Intaled at Matthewtown, Great Inagun, Itahoma Islands. She slipped away about 10 o'clock the same night and was to touch at Monte Crlsto or at the keys Just outside, with the object, It Is alleged, of tilling up the empty por tion ot her hold. The camiiln of the Fanlta said the portion of her cargo which was not landed consisted of coal, but there was good reason to suppose that It con sisted of something very different from coal. The suspicions of the Spanish consul hern were aroused. lie de nounced the taking on hoard the steamer or the Dominicans and the sudden sailing of- the vessel without notice and without the nermlsslon of the Dominican consul. The Spanish consul classes this as a great outrage and as an in l of piracy, and entered a formal protist with the Ilaytlen au thorities. General Junn Ysldro Jlmlnes and General l'ablo Vnllaneuva ate believed to have been on board. The former lias long been In the public oyu In Santo Domingo as a desirable man for the presidency. General Vlllenueva fought bravely against President Iletireaux'a alleged usurpation nnd was exiled, lie has been llwnt: at Great Inagua for Home time part, and the Fanlta is said to have stopped theie In order to take him on board. According to the Impression which prevails at Cape Ilaytlen the Fanlta, when she left here, had a tried and resolute body of men on board and also carried a heavy supply of arms and ammunition. It Is charged that she skillfully worked up the Impression that she was engaged In an expedition to Cuba, and was going to Monte Crlsto to take on more men. The (list advices received here stated that the Fanlta anlved nt Monte Crlsto nt 3 o'clock Thursday afternoon, and that the revolutionists had no dllllculty In taking the (own. It was stated fur ther that, under Generals Morales ami Vlllaneuva, they were marching on Puerto Plata, while another detach ment was moving against Santiago do I.os Caballercs, the capital of the Dom inican government. Yesterday afternoon the Dominican consul here received a dispatch from President lleiireaux saying that the at tempted revi-lutlon nt Monte Cilsto had been defeated, that General Jlmlnes lied at the first fire of the government troops, tnklnrj refuge on bonrd the Fanlta and Hint all the others who landed, with the exception of three, had been killed. A correspondent at Puerto Plata ca bles a con'lrmatlon of the accounts of tho repulse of the revolutionary party. General Augustln Morales and Itoml Jlo Huetz were killed. Five of the In surgents were tnken prisoners nnd shot yesterday morning. Tho others escaped In the stenmer Fanlta. President Heureaux left the capital yesterday with three men-of-war. The corre spondent, In coneludlns his dispatch, says tho revolutionary movement Is re garded at Puerto Plata as of no con sequence. The Dominican consul hero reaBseits positively that General Jlm lnez escaped on the Fanltn. He says lhat had Jiniluez been killed President Heureaux would havo been informed of the fact. Hut though the revolutionists have been repulsed, it Is believed mother at tempt wl'l soi n be made. The fact that the Clyde coi lpany furnished tho con spirators with n steamer is regarded ns very significant of the completeness of the preparations nnd tho prospect of their success, since the Clyde Steam ship company's concessions Is the most valuable held under the Dominican gov ernment. President Heureaux Is sold to have recently resumed the arbitrary execu tion of his opponents, sometimes open ly, sometimes stealthily. The tragic disappearances of men of political note have been freauent of late In Dominion. General Pablo Iteves Is said to be anions the olllcers who have risen against the president. i.iiAiir.its or Tin-: isnvoir. Until Havo lleen Conspicuous In I!o lmlf of Cuban Liberty. Mr. Jlmines Is a wealthy merchant, who had houses at Monte Crlsto, Hani, Cape Ilaytlen, Paris, Hamburg nnd Kuw York. He came here very often, and his children were brought ud In American schools. Mr. Jlmlnes has been exiled for many yenrs from Santo Domingo by President Heureaux, who feared the Inlluence exercised by tho merchant. General Morales, the other lender, who Is reported to have been Bhot as soon a he was captured, was the real organizer of this expedition, tho third one he has led to free his country from the dictatorship of Heureaux. The lat ter eared Morales more than he did any other of his enemies, and It wan to be expected that he would show no mercy towards him.
