Too The use of the surgeon's knife Is be coming' bo general, resulting' fatally In such a large nutnber of cases, as to occasion general alarm. Mr. William Walpolc, of Walshtown, South Dakota, writes; "About three years ago, there came under my left eye a little blotch about the size ot a small pea. Itgrcv.'rap!dly, and shooting pains ran In every direction. I became alarmed and consulted a good doctor, who pronounced it can- Wccr, and said that it ) J must be cut out. This I would not consent to, having little faith in the Indiscriminate use of tlicknife. Head ing of the many cures made by S. S. S.,1 determined to give that tnodlcine a trial, and after I had taken It a few days, the cancer became irritated and began to discharge. This after awhile teased, leaving a small scab, which finally dropped off, and only a healthy little scar remained to mark the place where the destroyer had held full sway. "Tell tho Oli vette to eet under way at once, Cap tnln Cowles, slfinal the Haclie that the United States lleet Is ready to clear out of Itnvuna, and please follow the llacho out." These were the words of Consul Gen eral Leo at G:1B Saturday afternoon as he stood on the poop of the Fern with a ftroup of correspondents around him, It was evident to all that General Lee Intended to bo the Inst to leave, and a murmur of applause went around in support of his Intention. The Evelyn hnd nlrendy passed Morro Castle when the Olivette weighed anchor. Tho llacho was close behind and the Fern wos the last of the line. Tho whnrves and boats on both sides nt the narrow entrance to the harbor were crowded with Spaniards, who hissed and jeered as each boat pnssed out. As the Fern rounded to, heading for the open sea, she passed near the Mnlne wreck. The croup on deck had been InuRhliiR and talking, expressing their satisfaction at leaving Havana. With one accord each man doffed his hat in salute to the bravo (lend, while silence fell on all for tho space of sev eral minutes, General Lee belnrr on board the Fern, made thnt boat a target for redoubled hisses, groans, cat calls and whistles from the crowds on shore. "Get out, Yankee swine," was among the mildest expressions used. This seemed to strike everyone on board as ludicrous. Vlco Consul Springer, who had been In the Island 30 years, waved his hand, to a particularly abusive group, saying In tones loud enough for all to hear: "Walt, wnlt, my friends; we shall all be back soon." There was one pretty Incident. On the Cabanas shore a British steamer was unloading at her wharf. As tho Fern passed the Union Jack was dip ped, while tho Encllsh crew cave a hearty cheer. It Is needless to say that the compliment wns returned with all possible gusto. Havana seemed dazed when the peo ple found that General Leo was really going nnd that all tho Americans were going with him. Not to see a single United States llait lloatlng from tho staff at Casa Nuevo struck many resi dents as little less than a calamity. Th correspondents were besieged with eager questions qs to the Intentions of the Americans, and when tho fleet ex pected a bombardment was likely to commence. The government officials Beemed as much at a loss as all the rest. A Spanish officer of high rank besought a correspondent to tell him If ho had any news not made public and affecting the future of tho city. Leo nnd (iollnu Visited lllnnco. The fact that Mr. Gollan, the British consul, called with General Lee on Captain General Blanco also puzzled many, some believing that this meant an English alliance had been settled. Tho truth Is that the Havana news papers have been under such close surveillance for months, have been made to publish so many untruths and have printed so many tales of the Uni ted States backing down at the demand of Germany, Italy, Austria and Rus sia that the residents take no stock whatever In anything published. Con sequently, when they saw the Ameri cans leaving, despite the statements of the papers that they had no .Inten tion of going, the people believed a crisis at hand. Under instructions from. General Lee, who went on board tho Fern Immedi ately after his farewell call on Cap tain General Blanco, the consular peo ple and the correspondents went quietly on board in twos nnd threes. No one was molested or Insulted, but the people stnred curiously as tho news paper men, to whose presence all had grown accustomed, rodo down to the dock with their grips, canes and other hand baggage, showing their Intention to depart. In fact, Havana was kinder than the ocean outside. All arrived at Key West yesterday In a stnte of wreck. Every body was sick, some more than others. Even the naval men did not escape. From the crowded decks of the Olivette heaity cheers went up as -the launch from the Fern, with the correspondents and consular agent on board, put ashore. Several hundred persons on the dock added their shouts to this lusty welcome, and for some hours stayed gazing at the Fern, on which General Lee could be seen pacing the deck. At about 11 o'clock General Lee came ashore and secured an answer from Washington to his request for orders sent earlier. After a brief re ception General Lee went on board the Olivette, which had been kept In wait ing, and sailed for Tampa at noon. He goes direct to Washington. Nineteen refugees landed from tho Bache, and 100 from the Evelyn. Tlio OlIvotto'H Motley l'nK'Joiitror List The steamer Olivette arrived from Havana at 2 o'clock yesterday morn ing with 219 refugees on board. Forty of these landed hero, and tho re mainder proceeded for Tampa, Among those on bonrd hound for Tampa are Miss Clara Barton, Dr. Elwell, Dr. Eagan nnd four Bed Cross sisters, composing, with others, the regular Bed Cross party. Dr. Brunner, United States sanitary Inspector at Havana, and Dr. Dudley, his assistant, and Messrs. Lawton und Chllds are also among the passengers hound for Tam pa. Messrs. Lawton and Chllds are ac companied by a large staff of clerks lately employed In the banking houses. The passengers filed nshore after un dergoing a cursory examination. With few exceptions the passengers were either colored or Cubans, and spoke the tongue of tho land from which they had Just lied. A good sized crowd greeted them, and much kissing, patting on the back and Jabbered wel come ensued. It Is hard to believe that these were American citizens, forwhose sake tho notion of congress had been delayed. Among the few educated per sons on board tho Olivette considerable surprise was exhibited at finding them selves once more In thilr nnttvo land. Even up to Saturday morning they hud scarcely believed It would prove neces sary for them to leave Cuba. Many People Cannot Brink cofl'eo at night. It spoils their sleep. A fact that lends horror to the fear ful tragedy Is tho,t It may never be known with any degree of accuracy Just how many lives were sacrificed, who they were or where they came from. Many a poor fellow lies burled where no human aid can reach him, and his remains must rest until the summer rain melts the tons of snow and Ice under which he lies. Upon the crowded trail no record was kept of the living mass of humanity braving hard ships and facing death Itself In the mad rush for gold. In the procession that dally passed were peoplo from all parts of the world, unknown to one another. Tho work of rescue has continued night and day ever since last Saturday, being gradually more systematized and consequently meeting with hotter re sults. Thus far work has been confined to the outskirts of the slide, in the hope of rescuing those who arc Injured, but not yet dead. The main body of tin avalanche, wlfich Is estimated to be 50 feet deep and ISO yards long, has not yet been touched. If there are any bodies underneath they can not be res cued in time to save life. Four men were taken out alive after thev had been burled 19 hours. In many in stances the bodies of the dead are not bruised in the slightest, and appear as natural as life, Indicating that they were suffocated In the snow. Many unclaimed bodies were buried near the scene of the disaster. Seventeen employes of the Chllkoot Railway and Tram company, who went up to tho summit on the morning of the slide to work, are mlsslnf, and It la feared they are among the lost. 'It Is estimated that la.OOO tons of out fits are burled under the snow and lee. There were several smaller slides be fore the death dealing avalanche start ed. About 2 o'clock in the morning a, small slide occurred which buried sev eral cabins. The alarm was spread, and many people were endeavoring to work back to Sheep Camp when the biggest slide occurred. The snow storm was blinding, and crowds were coming down by the aid of a ropo when overtaken. The slid. covered the trail for sev eral hundred yards, at a depth of 50 feet In many places. It has effectually discontinued travel for the present, and It will be some toine before It can be resumed. J. A. Raines, of Maine, who wns for tunate enough to be dug out alive, says: "All of a sudden I heard a loud re port and Instantly felt myself going swiftly down the hill. Looking around, I saw many others burled, some with their feet out and heads buried out of Eight, and others with only their heads showing. When I struck the bottom I tried to run. but the snow caught me and I was Instantly burled beneath 30 feet of snow and rock; and was on the very verge of death by suffocation when I was reached by the rescuers."
