Wllkcsbarre, Pa., Feb. IS. It was 2 clock yeBterday afternoon before court opened for the trial of Sheriff Martin and his deputies, charged with the kill ing of the Lattimer strikers. The morning session was abandoned owing to It being election day. None of tho urors voted, however, although four of them live In this city. The first witness called was John Platak. He told about the march to West Hazleton, and said that the sher iff flourished his rovolver very freely, and told the strikers they had better go home, or thero would be trouble. When they arrived at Lattimer the deputies were waiting for them with their guns ready. When the shooting commenced the witness said he stool still, and was so frightened he could not move for a minute or two. Then ho started to run, hut had gone only about 200 yards when he was shot In the left leg, tho ball passing through his calf. He ex hibited the wound to the Jury. He said he saw a number uf men fall, most of them In the ditch alongside the railroad track. When asked If the sheriff did any shooting he said: "He had a re volver, but what ho did with It I could not say." The cross examination of Platek brought out the fact that the Harwood men stopped work upon the order of their bosses, who said that as soon as the McAdoo strikers npproached they should leave the colliery. They did so. The McAdoo men were armed with ticks. He also said that as one of tho committeemen he proposed going over to Lattimer alone, but one of the strik ers said they would beat him if he did so, so he went with the crowd. Casper Wlshnlskl swore' that the sher iff fired the first shot, and the man he fired at fell. Witness was about 20 yards away at the time. Ho said the Bherlff stepped to the side of the road, aimed his levolver and fired. A man standing about thrco yardB away fell. He did not know the man's name. The witness ran away and reached a point nearly 200 yards away from the .depu ties before belntr hit. He then got a bullet In the left leg. Just below tho knee, and one In the right thigh. Neither wound was sorlous. Asked If he knew any of tho deputies who did the shooting at Lattimer, he said he 1 could pick out some, and walking down to where they sat indicated 16 of them. The cross examination failed to break down any tho the evidence about tho sheriff firing the first shot and hit ting a man, but It did break up much of the force of the evidence about the deputies, the witness saying that when he pointed them out he did net niPiin that they were shooting, but that they were there at Lattimer. John Bunk, of Crnnberry, said he wnB shot In the head while 200 yards away from the deputies. The ball carried away the bone alongside the head from the ear to the eye, and there la no bone there now. The course of the bullet Is clearly marked by a depression along the side of the head. The arrival of M. limlle Zola, M. Perreux nnd otherB at the nsslses court of the Seine yesterday, the eighth day of the trial of the nov ellBt nnd tho publisher ot The Aurore, was not marked by nny Incident. While Bome iieople are already discussing the extent of the sentences others regard the ncqulttal of the defendants as cer tain, as It Is evident the court Is be coming more favorably disposed to ward M. Zola. At tho opening of the proceedings the presiding Judge, M. Delegorgue, disal lowed the request of counsel for M. Zola that the experts heard at the Ksterhuzy court martial should be call ed to testify. General Oonso reappeared on the wit ness stand and protested against the assertion made by II. Jaurcs, the So cialist deputy, on Saturday last that the general staff had refused to en lighten the Dreyfus affair. M. Laborle, replying to General Gonse, said that If he desired to throw light upon tho case he (Gonse) could ask the war minister's permission to dn so. To this General Gonso answered that It was not within his province to transmit such a request to the min ister for war. M. CrepluB Janln, a writing expert, was the next witness. Ho strenuously denied that he hud attempted to bribe M. Teyssonnleres to modify his reports of the Dreyfus, bordereau. M. Teysson nleres, M. Crepleux Panln added, had declared that It was on his (Teysson nleres') report alone, and not on M. Bertlllon's, on which Dreyfus was con victed. This statement caused a sen sation. Director Meyer, of the French record office, opened his testimony by affirming himself a Catholic. He declared Unit the published fac similes of the border eau were us exact as possible, and hr thought tint General Peilleux's con tention that the fac simllles looked like forgeries was an exaggeration. The witness added that lie only desired an enllghteiuni nt of this sad affair, und If lie wos allowed to compute the fac simile with the original, if mistaken he would loyally say so. The witness ud , mltted that he had acted wrongly In ' entrusting the examination of the bor dereau to M. Hertlllon, who, he as 1 serted, had noted In a manner devoid of all sense, it. Meyer concluded with saying that the handwriting of Major Ksterbazy resembled that of the bor dereau. M. Laborle then asked permission to examine the experts, Cotiard, Belhom me anu Aanlnaid, but the court re fused the request. Protessor Krnest Mollnler, of the Col lege of France, testified that Major ISs terhazy'H handwriting absolutely re sembled that of the bordereau. M. Clemenceau, counsel for The Aurore, lead letters from Madame De lloulancey admitting the posses sion of letters which Major ISsterhazy wrote her between 1SS1 nnd 1894 and containing serious animadversions of France and the French irmy. Major Esterhazy, It appeared, asitcd that the letters be returned to him, but Mme. De lloulancey refused to do so. In order to be able to prove that she had not committed forgery. Three amateur experts in handwrit ing testified that the fac simile was an exact reproduction of Major Ester- hazy's handwriting. M. Felix Frank, a lawyer of Brus sels, made some long, technical dem onstrations on a blackboard and said: The majority of the experts started on the false Idea that the writer of the bordereau had disguised his handwrit ing. The bordereau, however, was written naturally and In a running hand, which Is Identical with that of Major Esterhazy." The witness con cluded with predicting that some day It would bo recognized that the bor dereau was not written by Dreyfus. Professor Grlmand, of the polytech nic school, deposed that ho signed tho protests against the conduct of the Dreyfus uffuir, because he was con vinced that respect for law, honor and the fatherland was Involved. The whole procedure struck this witness as being extraordinary. He added: "In spite of the disguised threats and acts of Intimidation of which I have been the victim, I here affirm that a revision of the caso is a crying necessity, and I In tend to do my utmost to obtain It." Professor Havert, of tho College of France, said he examined, ns an ex pert, the bordereau and the letters of Major Esterhnzy nnd Dreyfus, as well as a letter written by Dreyfus since his condemnation. The latter, the witness continued, was devoid of resemblance to tho bordereau, of which he was con vinced Major Esterhazy was the author. Comte Esterhazy, In nn Interview last night, declared himself tho "victim of a miserable Jewish plot." He conclu ded vehemently: "It Is Impossible that this drama Fhould close without scenes of violence. Likely enough the streets of Paris will be strewn with 100,000 dead before the miserable business Is brought to a conclusion. For my own part I should nsk nothing better than to lead my regiment against the Jews of Paris. I would shoot them without hatred or anger, as a work of public safety, and as willingly as If they were eo many rabbits." When a man Is struck down by a poisoned arrow tip ped with the venom of the deadliest of serpents, he knows that his time has come. Death is only a question of moments, but not one man in a thousand realizes that when a little extra bile gets into his blood bis whole system is bclnif polsond just as truljr as if a venom tipped arrow was sticking m his vitals. Rattlesnake poison is a good deal quick er than bile-poison but the latter will do just as deadly work if It keeps on accu mulating in the system. Trobably two thirds of the cases that end in consumption begin with "liver complaint" and indiges tion. These troubles would never get as far as consumption if Dr. Pierce's Golden Medical Discovery was used before the bile-poisoning got fairly under way. This remarkable "Discovery" invigorates the torpid liver and gives it power to filter the poisons out of the system rapidly and thoroughly. It strengthens the- digestive fluids nnd enables them to make rich red nourishing blood; it builds up healthy muscle, steady nerve force and enduring strength.
