I Oklnlioma City, Jan. 12. There Is an , uprising In tho Seminole nation, and . 200 armed Indians have killed 25 citi zens of Pottawattonile county, this ter ritory. Tho Indians are seeking to avenge tho recent burning of Lincoln McQelsey and Palmer Simpson, two In- , dlans of the Seminole tribe, who were accused of murdering and outraging i Mrs. Leard, of Maud Postofllce. A spe cial tralnload of armed citizens has gone to Karlsboro, ten miles from Maud, and excitement Is higher than ever be fore known In the territory. A telegrnm received by tho train dis patcher of the Choctaw, Oklahoma and Gulf railroad 'from the station agent at Carlcsboro states that a band of 200 Seminole Indians Is on the warpath, and Is leaving behind It a trail of blood. The brief Information conveyed was that the Semlnoles were avenging tho work of tho mob of white men that burned two Seminole Indians at the stake on Friday last, and that the In furiated Semlnoles had already massa cred 25 men, women and children. ft'!... olntlnti nn-at.f irnt'ji tha ntl.llttnnnl Information that the band started from a point six miles south of Earlslioro 1 with the avowed Intention of setting ' fire to Tecumsch and killing all whom they met: that the Indians were re ported to have changed their course and were at the time of the sending of the message headed toward Earlsboro, The receipt of this startling informa- tlon has created Intense excitement In South McAlester. Federal Judges Townsend and Springer, who are In the city, are anxiously awaiting further news. Scores of people who have rela tives and friends at Earlslioro and other points In that section are be sieging the telegraph office for news, but the agent has left the Earlsboro station to gather further Information, or perhaps was slain or driven to seek refuge. If the Earlsboro agent cannot be reached soon by wire a train will be dispatched from McAlester bound for the scene of the reported massacre. A special from Shawnee, O. T., says: The train from the east last night brought to this city a car containing every woman and child at Earlsboro. The passengers confirm previous re ports, and say that a pitched battle between tho Indians and the settlers took place yesterday afternoon near Maud Postolllce, resulting In the wiping out of several families. A message calling for men and arms has Just been received from Earlsboro, saying that nearly 200 Indians have sworn ven geance on the town and are moving toward the place, declaring that they will burn It. A special from Wewoka, I. T., de clares that everything Is peaceful In that section. The telegram says: United States Commissioner W. T. Fears and Mr. J. F. Wisdom, chief clerk to Indian Agent Wisdom, ac companied by C. P. Lynn, the national physician of the Seminole nation, went to the farm of Henry Taylor, where the burned bodies of McGeisey and Simpson are burled, and opened the temporary grave. Only the trunks of the bodies remained. The legs and arms were entirely burned off, and they were unrecognizable. A chain was around the neck of each and secured by a padlock. The chain was removed and brought back to Wewoka. It will be used as evidence in the Investiga tion. Commissioner Fears Is thorough ly Investigating the matter. It Is rumored that the people along the Oklahoma line are much excited, and fear the Indians will cross the line and endeavor to avenge the death of their brothers. This, however, need not be feared. Second Chief Huldbutter has directed the band chiefs of the Seminole nation to urge the Indians to be quiet, and not commit any reprehen sible acts. Mrs. II. II. Ford. The sen ate voted l'J for McKlsson nnd 17 for Hanna. The house stood: Hanna, 50; McKlsson, 49; Wiley, 1; Warner, 1; Lentz, 1, nnd one absent. The only absentee wasHepresentatlve Cramer, the Democratic-Populist mem- I ber from Paulding county, who Is serl- ! nil.lv nlr Tlla nlivntntnn ntntpil Inst night that he could not possibly be In his seat today. After the vote was recorded yesterday In each branch of the legislature separately a majority of a (luorum of those present Is all that Is necessary In the Joint balloting to day, so thut the serious Illness of Mr. Cramer might become an Important factor. The scattering vote yesterday for Lentz, Wiley nnd Warner was cast by Representatives Wiley, Ilnzlett and Hess, all Democrats. If Cramer had been present and all other Democrats In line McKlsson's vote In the house would have been 5:1, or still three short of a majority In that branch of the legislature. With Hanna having a ma jority uf three In the house, McKlsson having a majority of two In the sen ate, the chair will announce today that there was no election yesterday, and that a Joint ballot will be In order. If all the senators and representatives are recoided on the Joint ballot today a they were recorded yesterday on their respective ballots Senator Hanna will have a majority of only one over all. Dut In the absence of Representative Cramer, and In event of some of the Democrats refusing to vote for Mayor McKlsson, he Is likely to have a larger majority. With the result apparently hanging on the change of only one vote the contest continued all night as it has for the past two weeks. The seven Republicans whrJ refused to vote for Senator Hanna yesterday signed statements that they have burn ed their bridges behind them. Senator DurkP, Representatives Scott, Mason, Jones and Rutan say they will vote for Hanna If the Otis charges of attempted bribery are proven to be untrue. Rep resentatives Otis and Ilramloy, how ever, simply signed a codicil to the statement of the other five dissenters. In which they concur In asking for an Investigation, but they state that they will not vote for Senator Hanna under any circumstances. While the bureaus of claims and charges are In full operation on both sides, as usual, there are also reports about the bribery charges being pre sented to the grand Jury of Hamilton county nnd Franklin county. The grand Jurors are In session In both of these counties, and there are current reports of efforts to secure Indictments before noon today. As Representative Otis claims to have been offered a biibe at his home In Cincinnati, that case would be brought only before the grand jury of Hamilton county, and It will be necessary for Representative Otis to lie there as a witness. Mr. Otis and othei. who would be wanted as witnesses in that case are hero this morning, and it Is not thought probable that he would absent himself today. It the vote is cast today as it was cast yesterday the absence of Mr. Otis aud others opposed to Hanna would have no effect on the results. There was talk of filibustering, but the oppo sition could not break a Joint quorum If all their members should remain away. The other case of alleged bribery comes from the other side. Represent ative Snider, of Green county, who has been stopping at the Neil House during the past week, voted yesterday for Hanna, for Hoxwell for speaker last Monday a week, and attended the Re publican house caucus one week ago last Saturday. The opponents of Sen ator Hanna have been after him close ly and constantly. It is alleged that Mr. Maddey came to the Nell House last week to see Mr. Snider, nnd that he claimed to represent Kurtz and Bliss. It Is charged that Mr. Snider was offered $5,000 for his vote, and that the names of his backers were given by the caller. A report of the conversation between Snider nnd Maddey, secured by u hidden stenographer. Is In the hands of Hon. K. G. Rathbone. While it Is not likelv that any in dictment will be made, yet it is quite probable that there will be nn attempt in the legislature today to make a dramatic scene on the bribery charges. The opposition Is charging the Hanna men with voting down the motions and the resolutions yesterday for an Inves tigation of the bribery charges made by Representative Otis. The Ilanua men say they will give the fullest con sideration to this investigation at the proper time, hut that the purpose of these charges now is to stampede the legislature on the balloting for senator, and that such a scheme cannot be car ried through. Some of the Hanna men also state that at the proper time they will reorganize the house, as the vote of yesterday showed that they 3iad a majority of three over all In that body. The Democratic steering committee gave out a signed statement declaring that "Hanna will not be elected by this legislature." Mayor McKlsson was In conference during the evening with the opposition, and It was declared very emphatically by the leaders that the fight had not by uny means been lost, and that they would again rally their forces In tho Joint ballot today to a sudlclent degree to win the battle.
