Ambassador Hay Talks in London
of tho Nation's Feast Day.
EMBLEM SHOULD BE A TUEKEY.

LonJon, Nov. 26. Over three hun
dred American men and women and a
few lingllsh persons celebrated Thanks
giving Day liy a dinner at the Hotel
Cecil last night. The party Included
John liny, the United States ambas
sador, and Ills wife and daughter;
Henry White, secretary of the United
States jsmbassy; J. It. Carter, second
Secretary of the embassy; Lord Strath
cona and Mountroyal, of Canada; Arch
deacon Sinclair, Louts Astor Chanler
and William Fulch, United States min
ister to Uruguay. The menu, which
was especially designed for the occa
sion, was ornamented with American
and British flags, and over the Beat of
the ohalrman was an enormous eagle.
The list of toasts was long. The health
of Queen Victoria "was proposed by the
chairman, who read a letter, dated
Windsor Castle, from Sir Arthur John
Dlgge, private secretary to her ma
jesty, saying:
The Queen desires me to beg that
the American ambassador will be so
good as to convey to tho members of
the American society in London the
expression of her maJesty'B sincere
thanks for the beautifully Illuminated
address of congratulations she received
from that body. I have further to as
sure your excellenoy how deeply the
queen was touched y the sentiments of
sympathy with the enthusiasm of her
own subjects on the 60th anniversary
of her accession to the throne which
was contained In this address from
citizens of the United States."
Hon. Sir John Garell Barnes, justice
of the high court of Justice, proposed
the health of Ambassador Hay, dwell-
AMBASSADOR JOHN HAT.
Ing upon the great friendliness that he
believed exists between England and
the United States, and saying: "If the
two countries will only put their backs
together they can rule the destinies of
the world."
Ambassador Hay responded with a
bright spweh. He sketched the origin
of the day, which began, he said, "In
that pathetic thank offering of our
forefathers when they were keeping
alight the spark of freedom which was
destined to kindle Into such a beacom
blaze enlightening and admonishing
the world. Some of our peculiar Insti
tutions," continued Mr. Hay, "thank
Heaven wo have lost. The worst pass
ed away In the tempest of the war it
caused, but this, the most unquestion
ably peculiar of all, we can trust to
abide with us forever and forever. This
Is one of the few things we can do that
offends nobody, threatens no one, and
competes with no one. Seventy mil
lions of voices praising God together
would not justify the addition of one
Ironclad to any navy on earth."
Mr, Hay then paid an eloquent tri
bute to "the unknown, nameless artist
Who, In the days of early New England,
first brought to perfection the pumpkin
pie." He endorsed Benjamin Frank
lin's suggestion that the turkey should
be the national emblem Instead of the
eagle, "who, with aristocratic profile,
loud voice and predatory disposition,
hardly commends Itself as the emblem
of modest, Industrious and conscien
tious democracy, while the turkey, like
a true altruist, exists only for the good
of others and perishes by thousand's
yearly for the public welfare."
In concluding his speech Mr. Hay
enumerated the causes for thankful
ness, and said:
"We are thankful that we speak En
glish, or if our friends on this side of
the ocean think that is boasting, that
we talk United States, which answers
equally as well for telling the truth."
Lord Strathcona and Mountroyal, re
sponding to "Our Next Door Neigh
bors," said that Canada, while loyal
to tho queen and to Great Britain, had
the fullest feeling of friendship for the
United States, and he was atlsfled that
if either country should get IntP diffi
culties the other would help its neigh?

THE CANADIAN ANSWER,
Sftld tq llo Unfavorable to Our Gov
pnimont's Main Proposition.
Ottawa, Onf., Nov, 26,. A. reply has
been prepared by the Dominion govi
eminent and fprwarded to Washington
In respect to the negotiations which are
now going on between both countries,
The government will not say what the
reply b until It reaches Mr. Foster at
Washington, but It Is understood that
It Is a refusal to stop pelagic sealing for
a year, as tne umteq plates requtsttd,
The whole question depended upon this,
and therefore it would appear timt the
negotiations are to fall in their object,
However, there Is a report that the
Canadian government has proposed an
alternative proposition for the consid
eration of the United States which
could be laid before congress at Its next
sitting and passed In time to deal with
pelagic coaling and the questions of
dispute next season,
A GREAT SURPRISE IS IN STORE
for those who will go to-day and get a pack
age of GRAIN-O. It takes the place of
coUeo at about I the cost. It Is a food drink,
full of health, and can be given to the
children as well as the adult with great
benefit. It Is made of pure grains and looks
and tastes like the finest grades of Mocha or
Java coffee. It satisfies everyone. A cup of
Uraln-U is better for the system than a
tonic, because Its benefit is permanent. What

SOME FACTS REGARDING THE RAPID
I INCREASE OF HEART TROUBLES.
Do Not be Alarmed, But Look For the
Cause,
Heart troubles, at least among Americans,
are certainly increasing and while this may
be largely due to the excitement and worry
of American business life, it is more often the
result of weak stomachs, of poor digestion.
Real, organic heart disease is incurable ;
but not one case in a hundred of heart trouble,
is organic.
Tli close relation betweeu heart trotibte
and poor digestion is because both organs are
controlled by branches of the same great
nerves, the Sympathetic and 1'neumogastnc.
In another way, also the heart is affected by
that form of poor digestion, which causes gas
and fermentation from half digested food ;
there is a feeling of oppression and heaviness
in the chest caused by pressure of the dis
tended stomach on the heart and lungs, inter
fering Willi their action ; hence arises palpi
tation and short breath.
Poor digestion also poisons the blood, makes
it thin and watery, which irritates and
weakens the heart.
The most sensible treatment for heart troubles
is to Improve the digestion and to insure the
prompt assimilation of food.
This can best be done by the regular! use
after meals, of some safe, pleasant and effec
tive digestive preparation, like Stuart's Dys
pepsia Tablets, which may be found at most
drug stores and which contain valuable,
harmless digestive elements, in a pleasant,
convenient form.
It is safe to say that the regular, persistent
use of Stuart's Dyspepsia Tablets at meal time
will cure any form of stomach trouble, except
cancer of stomach.
Full si7ed packages of the tablets sold by
druggists at So cents.

Jugo Advooate Hunter Denounces
HiB Abuse of Hammondi
AS BAD AS CHATTEL SLAVERY.
Tho Oflloer Aawiimed an Arliltmry
Power That In Not Upheld by Mili

Pur Humanity on Trial.
Chicago, Nov. 26. In the levering
court martial case at Fort Sheridan
Lieutenant Colonel J. A. Itunter, ot
Fort Snelllng, the department of Da
kota, acting as Judge advocate, severe
ly arraigned Captain Lovertng; for his
treatment nf Private Charles Ham
mond. When the testimony was all In
and Attorney Blair had addressed the
court In defense of Captain Loverlng's
action, Judge Advocate Hunter arose.
After speaking of the importance of the
case he took up the specifications of tho
charge, saying that Loverlng was first
accused of the failure to use legitimate
means to get a garrison prisoner before
a summary court, and second that he
cruelly abused and 111 treated said
prisoner. He reviewed the general evi
dence against Loverlng, saying that
the testimony showed beyond doubt
that Loverlmr, as officer of the day,
kicked Hammond, prodded him with
his sword and cursed him.
"Gentlemen, I submit that In our
military community anything In the
nature of punishment should conform
to law," he continued, "and that a gen
eral use of arbitrary power or punish
ment without trial is calculated to
hasten our disbandment as an organi
zation not restrained by law and In
opposition to the spirit of our free In
stitutions. "lletween the officers who exercise
power In the manner the accused dld
and the enlisted men who are liable
to become their victims there can be
no other relation except that of mas
ter and slave. The general exercise In
the service of power and means such
as the evidence shows the accused to
have employed. In executing his order
to have Private Hammond brought be
fore the summary oourt would neces
sarlly result In our ollloers owning the
enlisted men. There would then be little
necessity for military tribunals and
Judge advocates, for our system of
discipline would be a revival of one In
vogue before the civil war on the
plantations of the south, where the
right of the master to the obedience
and submission of his slave In all law
ful things was perfect, and the power
belonged to the master to lnillct any
punishment on his slave, not affecting
life or limb, which he might consider
necessary for the purpose of enforcing
obedienoe."
'If you establish the fact that an offl
cer may with Impunity order ahy pun
ishment he pleases to be inflicted on a
soldier," said Colonel Hunter, "you re
duce enlisted men to a condition of
servitude. That Is what Is meant by
the false doctrine of being masterful.
But It Is the law that should be ir
master. There are rules published .or
tho guidance of those who may jm-
mand, as wen as those who may 1 jrve,
"That Hammond should have been
produced In court I do not deny, but
that his disobedience and stubbornness
Justified his being roped and dragged
there, and In his prostrate, helpless
condition kicked and prodded with the
sword, I do most emphatically deny,
"The position In which the accused
Was placed by the disobedience of Ham
mond does not appear to have been a
perilously trying one, for he had about
him In the guard soldiers who were able
to lift Hammond and carry him to
court. The conjunction doeB not ap
pear to have been so extraordinary as
to Justify a military officer either
making a mistake of Judgment or los
ing his temper.
"In this trial I think there is some
thing more than a serious accusation
involved. I think the reputation of
army officers for good Judgment, for
command of self, for humanity and
Justification Is all on trial here. The
things which the accused has done
tyrannically ought to appear to you
who have heard Just as bitter and
scandalous as they did to him who felt
-tiia. Tlje.. finding delivered by this
court will live"1bh"srtatte- Jqs have been
sounded over the craves tn? - the men
composing this court," "
The verdict In the court martial has
been forwarded to the secretary of war.
It Is the general opinion that Captain
Loverlng will meet with nothing worse
than a reprimand. The finding Is al
ways a secret one, being forwarded to
the commanding officer of the depart
ment. From General Brooke It was
sent to Washington, where It is discre
tionary with the military authorities to
give it out for publication.
