Still orrortnir Odds on Vnn Wyolf.but Colonol SwordH Suococds tn I'lnalucc Throo Tlioiisniid Dollnrs ou Trnayns Against J.ow. New York, Sal. 20. The letter of Itobert A. Van Wyck, Tammany ean dldato for mayor, accepting the nomi nation, was given out laBt night. If discusses municipal affairs solely. A large part of the letter arraigns Uip present alty administration for ex travagance and calls attention to the discomforts the people are enduring through delay In street Improvements now In progress. Mr. Van Wyck than takes up the city's alleged grievances against the state legislature, saying of the Raines law: "In the Haines liquor law we have an examplo of a class legislation ut terly without public sanction. It was imposed upon our citizens against their vigorous and united protest. It has failed to secure a single one of the ad vantages urged In Justification of its k enactment. It has only succeeded, by f uiBpensiug wiin local supervision ana control, In removing the salutary re straints which heretofore protected the reputable dealer from the open rivalry of the dive keeper." Mr. Van Wyck pledges himself to favor the Increase of school houses, the establishment of a rapid transit sys tem, more bridges across East river, more parks, better docks, $1 gas and enforcement of the eight hour law. He I says further that the municipality It self should both own and control its franchises. "Claim everything" has seemingly been adopted as the motto of many of the political master mechanics of New Tork for the pending-campaign. The most sweeping Is that made by MessrH. Sheehan and Croker, representing the Tammany organization, and which haB the practical endorsement of the bet ting men about town, who have all along been offering odds on Van Wyck. The claim, however, that the Tam many ticket will receive 260,000 out of the 475,000 votes registered In greater New York Is scouted by other party leaders, some of whom do not hesitate to assert that the prediction will be reversed more or less completely In favor of the ticket they are advocating. Next to Tammany's the most confident predictions are those given out at Re publican headquarters, where the tone Is most hopeful that the outcome of the election will be the choice of General B. F. Tracy for mayor. The adherents of Seth Low are professing confidence that their man will u elected, and the Georgeltes are professedly hopeful of winning the day. . ' Colonel Henry L. Swords, sergeant at'arms to the Republican national committee, visited Wall street yester day and offered to bet any part of $25,000 at even money that Genorr Tracy will poll more votes than" Seth Low. He succeeded In placing about $3,000 of It among members of the Stock Exchange and half as much more with several of the brokers on the "curb." The colonel announced his In tention to visit the bulls and bears again. "This Is only a small part of the Tracy money lying around loose," said the colonel. "The only trouble Is wo can't find any Low money to put It up a&Ulnst." Van Wyck still leads In the betting on the Stock Exchange. Oddgre go id as 2 to 1 that he vlll win out. Allen W. Thurman, son of the lato Allen G. Thurman, has written a letter to Henry George, which sincerely wish es George success. Mr. Thurruan was formerly ehnlrman of the Ohio state Democratic committee. Henry George last night addressed an assemblage of more than a thou sand people at Lion Park Hall, on the upper west side of this city. Ex-Postmaster Dayton also spoke. After tell ing of his' candidacy for the mayoralty U years ago, on the Identical platform on which he Is running now, Mr. George said: "I will not be cheated and counted out. The great time has come when the people are Interested In this cam paign, and I am honored by being asked to be the standard bearer of the De mocracy. If the people don't want me, then all right. There are two men In this tight with me of whom I am proud. One Is Charles AVOD'ayton. No one will say of him that he Is a dreamer or a man who cannot be trust ed with practical affairs." Mr. George and Mr. Dayton after ward addressed a .second large meet ing Jn Harlem. During his speech Mr. George said: "Mr. MoHugh, of the 'longshoremen, told me he had seen a payroll at Hazle ton, Pa., and there were on It names of men who drew only 5 to 20 cents a day. Think of It, men doing the hard work of these coal miners for this mis erable pittance. And this was not paid In money, but In store orders. Thsse were the men who were shot down at Hazleton. Mr. Pullman was at his office in the Pullman building up to 5 o'clock Mon day afternoon attending to business. Nothing unusual was noticed In his appearance. Mrs. Pullman was not at home when her husband passed away, she being absent In New York. She ras apprised of the death of hr hus band, and at once left for Chicago, arriving here today, accompanied by her two sons George and Sanger. While seemingly In good nealth, Mr. Pullman had been complaining during the last three or four days of the hot pell ajd. feeling rather uncomfortable. At 4.30 yeaterday morning he called his body servant and sent for a physician, but sank Into unconsciousness before the physician arrived. Mr. John R. In 185b .he settled at Chicago and engaged In the business of moving and raising- houses.. This . work was novel then, and he wactuite successful. About this time, ifc -discomfort at tendant, on .traveling at night attracted his attention. A few sleeping cars were in use at this time, but they were wretchedly crude, uncomfortable af fairs. Mr. Pullman bouBtit two old day coaches from the CMbalro and Alton road and remodeled them on something like the general plan of Uie sleeping cars of the present day. They were put Into service 011 the Chicago and Alton, and became popular at -once. He saw th' possibilities of the business, but he had great difficulty In inducing capi talists to join him. His propositions were laughed at. He persevered, how ever, and in 1863 built the first sleeping .car resembling the Pullman cars of to day. It cost 118,000, ic was the "Pio neer." After that the Pullman Palacu Car company prospered. It had shops at different cities. In 1880 the town of Pullman was founded by Mr. Pullman nnd his company.
