The most im portant development In the greater New York political situation yesterday was the unanimous nomination of Henry George for mayor by the united Democracy, composed of numerous free sliver and Bryan clubs which were ac tive in tho oampalgn of last fall. Mr. Ooorge onne polled 08,000 votes as a labor candidate for mayor of New York. Ills strength, if he should ad cept, would be drawn principally from the Democratic vote. The convention nominated John O. Doyd for comp troller nnd Winfleld B. Overton for president of the municipal council. A belief is current that Mr. George will not accept the nomination If Tammany Indorses the Chicago platform. So the Democrats are as much worried over Henry George as the llapubllcans aro over Seth Low. The Citizens' Union yesterday raised a largo Seth Low banner In front of their headquarters, as if to answer those who declare that the union Is negotiating for the withdrawal of their candidate. The Republican city con vention meets In Carnegie Hall today. The talk of the Republican leaders Is all In favor of tho unanimous nomina tion of General Benjamin P. Tracy for mayor. The Democratic city conven tion will meet Thursday evening. Will iam Sohmer, a leader among the Ger mans, a chief In Tammany Hall, and at present register of New York, seems to be the most promising of the can didates for the Tammany nomination for mayor. The Republican assembly district leaders of the borough of Manhattan met last night, and after a long caucus decided to place In nomination at the city convention today; For mayor, Benjamin F. Tracy; comptroller, Ashbel P. Fitch; presi dent of council, Ross Appleton. At a meeting of tho executive com mittee of Tammany Hall yesterday the roll of assembly districts for nomina tions for city and county officers were called, with the following result; Mayor William Sohmer, George B. McCIellan and Charles H. Knox. President of the Borough Council George W. Plunkot and Charles F. Al len. Comptroller Ashbel P. Fitch. District Attorney Wanhope Lynn, Thomas F. Grady, Frederick B. House, John F. Mctntyre, Jacob A. Cantor and Vernon M. Davis. Sheriff E. J. Fltzpatrlck, P. Q. Dool lng, Thomas J. Dunn, Augustus W. Peters. Coroner Dr.- John T. Nagle, Dr. M. B. Feeney, George J. Kraus and An tonio Zucca. County Clerk James W. Boyle, P. J, Scully, Patrick Keenan, James P. Keat ing and Louts F. Hoffen. Justice of tho Supreme Court Rastus S. Hansom and Charles W. Dayton. Justice of the City Court Isaac Fromme, Edward F. Dwyer, John H, McCarthy and Abraham Levy. These names were submitted to a special committee, which will report back to the executive commlttco next Thursday. Much stir was caused In political circles yesterday by the publication of a letter purporting to have been sent to Colonel William L. Brown, of the Now York Dally News, by William J, Bryan, urging that tho municipal cam paign in greater New York should be run In harmony with the principles and declarations of the national or ganization. Colonel Brown is not in the city, and no one can be found who will vouch for the authenticity of the letter. The letter, besides condemning the Citizens' Union movement as wrong tn principle, says: "A triumph of the Democracy of greater New York, except under the auspices of the Issue that animates the party, will have the same moral effect as a renewed and affirmed triumph of tho agencies led by Senator Hanna "When parties cease to represent cer tain fixed principles the supreme pre rogative of tho ballot becomes prosti tuted to a contest between organlza tlons for the spoils of office and the enjoyment of success. To this prostl tutlon of the ballot may be ascribed every chapter of shame and corruption In the history of American municipal government. It is better to have a government by the Republican party, responsible to Its declarations, than government by Democratic partisans without responsibility to Democratic principles. The Democratic party Is the party of homo rule, but home rule does not mean Irresponsibility to the nation at large. The great cities are part of the state and country; they aro the gran arles, treasurers, clearing house and capitols of culture and science; they1 are created, not of themselves, but of the whole people's toll and progress; therefore, It Is unnatural and artificial to avoid responsibility to national Is sues, and the political cowardice and polltloal crime. "Greater New York will be the un crowned capltol of America. The Dem ocrats of New York have a responsibil ity, not only to themselves and the greater city, but to their party and Its living principles and the nation. This election Is the most Important and In fluential political event between 1896 and 1900. To suggest that the Demo cratic party platform has no place In this contest Is to admit a doubt of Its wisdom. The Ipsue Is the life of the party." Don't Tobacco Spit and Smoke Your Life Away. John Iloecker. a farmer living eight miles from this place, Sunday night murdered his wife nnd five children and fatally wounded lila 8-year-old son, Henry. Afterward the fiendish or demented man sent a bullet Into his own head, Inflicting ai fatal wound. The family were pros paxpus Germans, and as far as Is known lived happily. No motive for tho tragedy has been disclosed. Iloeck er'a victims are his wife and these chil dren: Caroline, aged 14; Christine, aged 9; Henry, aged 8; Llzcle, aged G; John, aged 3, and nn Infant. Henry cannot recover from his wounds. Boeclter had an engagement to help a neighbor thresh yesterday morning, nnd on his not putting In an nppear ance his brother Henry went about 9 o'clock to see why he did not come. The doors of the Hoecker house were locked, and there were no signs of life about. Henry tried to get into the house, but met no resistance, and finally he kicked In the door and came upon the hor rible scene. Iloecker, with his wife and baby, slept In a back room, and the three corpses lay on a bed. The wife had been shot In the neck with a shot gun which stood In the corner, the baby had been shot and Its head crushed with the butt of a revolver. The man, still breathing, had a bullet hole In the forehead, and by his Bide was a six shooter with two chambers empty. The Boeclter home Is a story and a half frame house, and upstairs Henry and Lizzie lay on a bed with bullet holes In their foreheads, the latter dead, and the boy still breathing. In the opposite corner of the same room Caroline, Christine and John lay dead, each shot tn the forehead. The Indications are that Boecker first dlspatchPd his wife with the shotgun nnd then used the revolver on tho baby, first shooting It nnd then knock ing out Its brains with the butt end. Apparently Boecker then went upstair? Where the five children were sleeping and killed them. He must have used a light, for his aim was effective, each victim beln shot In the forehead. All but two children met with InBtant death, for the blood clots were under their heads, and two lay as calmly as if in sleep. All except Henry, who is not yet dead, were attired In night robes. Boecker had reloaded the wea pon while upstairs, nnd evidently sent the second bullet Into the oldest girl's brain Just before leaving the room. Going downstairs, he stretched him self beside the corpse ot his wife and thon shot himself. His right hand was burnt by the powder, showing the rapid use of the revolver. The weapon he had borrowed from his brother Henry last Thursday, remarking that he want ed to k)ll rats In the collar. It Is now recalled that Boecker had stneo thon practiced target shooting with It. Boecker was 34 years old, and for over 20 years lived In the neighborhood, Ho hfs been regarded us a prosperous farmer, and only recently bought a 200 acre farm a few miles from the old homestead. On. Sunday he attended Catholic service? at Breda with his vfe and some of the children, Later In the day he was visited by a neighbor, who says that when ho loft tho Boecker home In the evening they were seem ingly a happy family. Members of his father's family say he had no family troubles, his financial affairs were In pood shape, and they can assign no motjvp for the terrible prime, A GREAt SURPRISE' IS IH STORE for tlioso who will go to-day and get a pack ago of GRAIN-O.
