Captain Jo seph AVhltesldes, of the whaler Ke varch, lost in the Arctic, together with 35 of her crew, came down on the steamer Humboldt from St. Michael. The Nevnrch left San Francisco on March 2 last, and entered the Arctic ocean In July. She aoon got caught In the Ice at a point 120 miles northeast of Point narrow. They hoisted signals of distress, truiting that the revenue outter Hear or some of the other whalers would see them and come to their assistance. But the fog obscured them for four days, and they drifted rapidly northward with the icebergs. Finally they decided to leave the ship. On Aug. H the whole crew took the small boats and started across the Ice. After dragging them for five miles they came to open water and embarked The current caught them at once, and 1 l00'81" tbo no,t wonderful cure fordls before they had gone ten miles they I oa'e cvcr known. It etirei where all others Were In another Ice pack. They then I discovered that they only had five days' provisions, and they abandoned the boats and started across the Ice on foot. They got back safely, and then commenced preparations for a second attempt to save themselves. All but eight men decided to push across the Ice fields on foot. The weatjier was not bitterly oold, but It was foggy nnd disagreeable and neces sitated more clothing than was con ducive to raptd travel. For tills reason a limited amount of food was carried, for they thought they would surely reach the Hear or one of the whalers within two or three days. The elrtht men loft In the boat thought they were better off there thnn on the ice, and were left to their fate. Away across the treacherous Ice went lhev7 men and the gritty woman. Hut ono day out the captain and his wife and seven of the others changed their minds about the likelihood of saving themselves by the method they had undertaken. These nine went back to the ship, leaving 29 on the ice. Nothing has been heard of the 29 since that day, Aug. 12. The party got back to the ship sa'nly. and un Aug. .14 made another start with eight in thp party Captain White sides, his wife, and six men. They took a small canvas boat, Into which they put a week's provisions. It was a heavy load for the little craft, but this was the last hope they had. and they had to take desperate chances. Only the comparative quiet of the sea ac counts for the miraculous escape. Hough weather would have Instantly swamped them. They cot into clear water in a few hours, and paddling through the fog and darkness avoided as best they could the drifting ice. Finally they could go no further, and they got out and walked over the ice. For CO hours they kept on, first walking und now taking to the small boat. At last land was sighted. It proved to be Copper Island, a barren, desolate island, and from which position they were rescued the following day by the Bear. Cap tain AVhitesides thinks the 29 men left oh the Ice are surely lost, Constipation is tho cause of all sorts of serious disorders of tho blood. Strong cathar tics are worso than useless. It Is repoited that the Muflah of Hadda has failed to rnlse the gathering he ex pected and will retire to Tlrah. Fort Gulistan Is still hard pressed by the enemy. In a sortie the garrison suc ceeded in capturing three standards. The principal difficulty which the Mohmunds' punitive expedition has encountered thus far Is In getting stores and transport animals to the front. The entire railway between Peshawnr and Meerut Is practically blocked from lack of locomotives. Long lines of loaded trucks are waiting to be forwardi-d. All the available trains are being used to hurry the troops to the front. Oenpral A'eatman-Blggs, advancing along the Samana ridge to the relief Of Fort aullBtan, found the enemy en trenched In considerable force In the Goira hills. The third Gurkha regi ment stormed the position. One sepoy was killed and five wounded. General Yeatman-tllgge relieved Bangar, one of the posts on the Samana ridge, which had been hotly attacked. The enemy is visible In strong force at Sarnchnrl, and It la feared that, flushed with their success In the cap ture of that police post, they may at tack.
