Iir Gloucestershire, England, nearly every family has what Is called tho "death chair," the use to -which it is put being described as follows: "Many of those whose dwellings aro on the banks of the Severn die of bronchitis. When the end is near, and the suf ferer from that disease cannot breathe lying down, he sits over the fire, propped up in the "death chair." The high back sheltors him from draughts, and the projeoting wings are meant to support his head, when it falls over quietly in death. A "death chair" stands in tho best bed room of every farm house, and the parson and 'squire each keep one to lend to cottagers in time of need. Tub wailing and lamentation in the office of the Mahanoy City Ameri can ever since Saturday last is some thing appalling. In that interview Secretary Sherman Is quoted as sav ing: "England Is a great country, but it Isn't always safe to assume that she Is ready to follow up every quarrel with blows. She quarrels oftener than she fights." The Westminster Gazette declares that the Interview is "a frultv ex ample of Sherman's saloon stylo," and the St. James Gazette says: "Secre tary Sherman's utterances afford no material for dental by his friends of the statement that he is suffering from senile decay. But, after all, Mr. Sher man represents America, and we are certain all International courtesies will be observed." The Gloiie on this subject says: "Sec retary Sherman had better rid himself of the Idea that Uncle Sam is going to boss the show, either on the gold fields or In the fisheries. We are not ready o follow every quarrel with blows, but when we strike we strike hard, and the idea of our being afraid of a third rate naval power like the United States could only have occurred to a lunatic or to Mr. Sherman, Judging from the latest performance we may charitably assume thnt the rumors that Mr. Sher man is suffering from mental disturb ance is correct."
