Thk Klondike gold excitement has brought into existence a number of exploration and gold mining com panies which make enticing represen tations to induce people to subscribe for stock in their companies. Ono of these companies was investigated by the New York Herald, with the result that one of the chief promoters was shown to be a man under indiotment for perjury, and had in other matters an unsavory reputation. The incident should be a warning to all investor in Klondike ventures. Even with a company organized with honest and responsible men at the head of it, there may be a chance of failure. But witli irresponsible men running it, there is almost a certainty of loss. News from the grain producing states continues to lie most eucourttg ing. A telegram from Nebraska says the Burlington Railroad hat) started all ito ill ops running full time, and other Hues in the state are doing the same in order to keep their box cars moving to handle the unprecedented large crop of wheat now about ready to go forward. The telegram adds that the demand for grain ears ex ceeds all the hopes of the railroad men, and all foreign cars in the state have been seized by the Nebraska lines in direct violation of contracts with other lines, deeming the urgency of the occasion such as to justify tile proceeding. I faot all accounts from that state tend to sow that railway officials are much concerned over the movement of the abundant crops. Nebraska evidently can pro duce siiiucthing the country wants more badly than it wants WUIjjun J. liryan. Secretary Long has taken the preliminary steps toward the creation of a board of naval olll cers to ascertain the cost of a govern ment armor plant. The members of the boaril have been selected, Com modore llowoll, commandant at the League Island navy yard, and Captain Mccormick, of the Norfolk navy yard. The experts are of the opinion that it Is probably necessary, In making ar mor, to begin with the steel ingot at the very moment it is forged and be fore it has cooled once. This Is done In the best practice, and If it should be held to be absolutely necessary the government will be obliged to estab lish a steel plant alongside Its armor plant If It embarks In the business of armor making. The board is to report to congress at Its next session.
