J. r'oanlsn, who was tax collector of Shenandoah for three years ending 1806 wa at the Commissioners' office yesterday. His errand was a peculiar one, in fart one that present an unpleasant condition to Shenan doah in aft It phase. Mr. Scaulan stated that there are In ShennndoHh 4,000 foreigners, of the Polwli.lluiigarian-Lithuaniau typo assessed and on tbe duplicate. Of this mini ber only 700 are naturalized. Under the new alien tax law alt the rest must pay three cents a day and they cannot lie assessed for borough or school or other purposes. Mr. Seanlan therefore wanted to have these men exonerated. Now, here ! where Shenandoah comes in for the worst end of it. If the men aro ex onerated the town will bo out a big sum of inor.ey in the way of taxes. Tho school dis trict, however, will be the greatest sufferer, fur not only will the amount of the school district duplicate lie reduced to tho extent of the taxes on 3,800 people, hut its state appro priation .will also be cut down quite a big sum. Tbe school law governing the distribu tion of the appropriation is based ou the number of taXAbles iu a district. With over 8,000 taxables oil' the registry lists it is easily seen that Shenandoah will losea large portion of its state appropriation. The loss wjll be keenly felt, as Sheuaudoah lias 00 teachers and n large anil expensive district. TO THE LAND OF SUNSHINE And Plotters, tho Iliind of Aincrlcn, Call lornln.
