New York, July 14. Mrs. Eufrenln rtelneman was the star witness yester day wlisn the dxnmlrtntlon of the four alleged Cdstn Hlen, counterfeiters, Louis IlnUamrvn, llrjt. lltsy Clievln, Frederloa Mora and Herman Dolm. b resumed before United Slates Cominlsdloner Shields. Mrs. Ilelnman Is also under arrest as One of the coun terfeiters, and has turned state's evi dence. Yesterday she tol- all she knew about th alleged counterfeiting of $1,000,000 worth of notes of the ltanit of Costa ltlca, at Ban Jose, to assist a revolution to overthrow President YgleelHH and the provernment of Costa ltlca. Mora was to be the new presi dent of Costa ltlca In the event of the success of the revolution. Mrs. Ilelnman said that on March 2 lost Itlcnrdo De Itequeseus, who owns the Spanish American printing estab lishment In this city, and who Is also under arrest as one of the counterfeit ers, went to her room Just prior t,o his departure for New Orleans, on his way to Costa Rica. Ho had a satchel which the witness opened. She said that she found It packed with 100 pesos notes of the Bank of Costa ltlca. The notes were similar to the alleged counter feits which are In the possession of the district attorney. De Desqucsous said that his mother-in-law, Mrs. Betsy Chevln, had packed It at her home In Long Island City. Afterward. Mrs, Itelneman said, she went with De Itenueseus to his printing place, he carrying the satchel. Mora,- Hausman and several other men were there. 'I felt bad about De Requeseua go ing away." said the witness, and I told Mora that he wus sending Dj Ttequcseus to his death. Mora told mi' If I thought that way I ought to go with him to Costa Rica. I asked Mora If he knew what was In tho valise, and he pretended that he did not know. Mora accompanied Do Requeseus and mj'Belf to the Pennsylvania Btatlon. Then De Requeseus took the train for New Orleans. Mora carried the Bat- chel to the station. The next day Mora Insisted that I should follow De Reque seus to New Orleans, and I did so, meeting Pe Requeseus at the St. Charles hotel In that City, De Reque seus had the satchel In his room all the time. Before I left New York Mora gave me a letter, which I handed to De Requeseus at New Orleans." Mrs. Helneman then told or tne trip to San Jose, Costa Rica, where they. remained two weeks. She and De Re queseus then returned to this city. She then qontlnueu: "Mora caueu on uw Requeseun nnd myself the next day. I told him about the nrr?st. of Jose Cam po on the steamer at Port Llmon, Cflstn Rica, and he exclaimed! 'My God, tp government must have got the bill of lading for tho sofa.' He referred to the sofa which contained the $500,000 worth of counterfeit Costa Rlcan bank notes. De Requeseus told me of the sofa and Its contents when we were together In New Orleans and showed me the bill of lading. De Requeseus and Mora had a quarrel, and Mora said that De Requeseus had spoiled the game. Ho said that everything would have been all right If he had carried out his original plan and sent the money to Costa Rica In a. piano, Jrtora was much put out, and said that the revolution was a failure. On May 10 he advised Pe Requeseus and his fprp man, Hausman, to leave the cty, as ho feared they would bo arrested," On cross examination she stated t,hvt De Requeseus told her that he had made the counterfeit notes for Mora's political business, and that Mora would redeem them when he became president of Costa Rica. When she saw the money in the satchel she was surprised that the two men, who owed her a great deal of money, should have so many bank notes n their possession. She had been supporting Dp Requeseus and Mora for a long time. Chief Hazcn, of the secret service, paid today that young Dohn had con fessed to him that after the arrest of Pe Requ, eseus nnd IJrfl, Relneman he became frightened and threw t)ip litho graph stone.i from which the notes were printed Into the North river, near tho Pennsylvania, ferry slip. Th$ stones were eight In number, and weighed 76 or 80 pounds, Chief Hasten said that ho had two divers at work looking for the stones, and that he ox- pected to find them shortly. "The Inter national Christian Endeavor conven tion of 1897 will pane Into hlxtnry as In some respects the greatest and most memorable of all Its 16 predeccsurs. "An attendance of more than 40,000, a r irlstratlnti of over 20,000 actual Christian ISndeavoreri, which Is equal to an attendance of 80,000 in any large eastern city, when we remember that half of the attendants cross the Ilocky mountains in order to reach the con vention. "Hut better far than the numbers, nnd more worthy of note, was the spirit of the convention Its earnestness, its genuine ring, its high spiritual quali ties. "It brought a blessing to California; it will leave a blessing to California; It will leave a blessing behind it, and all the delegates will take a blessing home with them nB they scatter to the remotest parts ot the world." The above message, written for the press by the founder and leader of the Christian Endeavor movement, con cisely summarised the work of the con vention. Yesterday many of the dele gates departed to their homes, and many more are leaving today. A large portion of the strangers, however, will Visit various points of Interest before returning to their homes. There was a council of Btate presi dents at the Palace hotel yesterday. President Clark commented favorably Upon the fact that it was the largest similar meetlni? ever held by the so ciety. ThlB he considered remarkable, considering the great distance most ot thnse present had to travel In order to be present, Tlie question of where the conven tion of 1899 should be held was con sidered, but no action waB taken. There are several applications for the privilege of entertaining the delegate. Cincinnati and Detroit being the c(t les most spolten of, but It was thought hat to awttlt offers from other cities before coming to a conclusion. The matter, therefore, remains In abev ance. , It ws deckled that during the com ing year action should be taken by the officers of the association looking to wards a closer affiliation of the Chris tian Emleavorprs with kindred asso. clatlons. The laea 1b to widen the sphere of Christian fellowship already existing within the order until all aux- lliary church workers are In harmony throughout the world. Nntlonnl Hcpiililtcau Lcnguc, Detroit, July 14. The National Re publican league convention opened yes terday with a fair attendance of dele gates for an "off year" In politics, Nearly ftll the Btates are represented, although the quotas of delegates nro small In several Instances, The nb sence of party leaders who aro prom inently identnien with tho adminis trative and legislative departments of tho national nnd state governments Is a conspicuous feature. The radical partisanship ot the lengue men was Il lustrated In the fact thnt Mayor May- uury, a jjemocrat, was not Invited to offer a weicome to the delegates, Col onol II, jr. Dunield havlnc been bo lected Instead by the local committee. In his address of welcome Governor Plngree voiced his well known oddo- sltlon to favored corporations. Old People. Twelve Cubans, the last survivors ot an Insur gent camp In the province of Cttniaguy, reached Rio Neuvo, a little port on the north side of the Island, a few days ago, In an open boat. They were In a terrible condition of exhaustion, as they had been TO hours In making the passage. The little oraft, which had been constructed in the camp just be fore their departure, was found to leak in several places, and owing to the high winds and the heavy' seas the refugees were compelled to take turns at bailing her In order to keep from being swamped. Again and again they were on the verge of destruction, the waves washing over the boat and Ail ing her to the very thwarts.
