Surely the country is assuming proiier shape, the "croak ers" notwithstanding. j "The chaplain prays, Jerry brays, and the House adjourns," says the Pittsburg Times. At the same time the Senate stays, avoids tarill delays, nml the country hooriiys. Tiik contest for Sheriff within the Republican ranks Is becoming inter esting. So far us the Deniocruoy is concerned, Hon. Thomas J. Higgins, of town, is conceded thu nomination. About this time annually the house wife prepares a piece of sponge oi other sweet cuke with four or live Htrawberries stuck on top of it, to which she applies the name of straw berry shortcake. Tim lamp was stolen from Senatoi Tillman's bicycle the other day. This is particularly disagreeable, as the Senator is in need of all the light he can get. If thu thief had stolen Tillman, all would have been forgiven. Tiik Legislature has adopted a revolution calling for adjournment on July 1st. There will be many bills left over, if the provisions of this resolution prevails. When adjourn ment is reached some of the members from this county will need to make peace with their constituents for sins of omissions and commission. The Pennsylvania Society of Sons of the Revolution have passed reso lutions urging the general observ ance of Flag Day on Juno 14th, with the hope that the national flag will be displayed on that day. The secre tary has been directed to transmit copies of the resolution to the Presi dent, Governors of the states and territories and the various patriotic organizations. Tiik report that Gen. Weyler is Liberal shows that sometimes there is less in a liamo than even Juliet sup posed. "What is the name of this ?" demanded John Randolph of a waiter in h restaurant, pointing to a bever age which the waiter had brought him. "If this bo tea bring me coffee, and if it be coffee bring me tea." If Weyler be a Liberal, and in good standing on his side, all the decent Spaniards must belong to the other party. Tiik recent reports to the Comp troller of the Currency from nationnl banks of the leading cities of the country show an increased activity in loans and discounts and other branches of tlioir business. This is an additional evidence that tho promised return of business activity has begun and is going to continue. There is no more accurate test of business conditions than those bank statements, and tho evidence which is thus being received in Washington of a revival of business prosperity is unmistakable. Thk political outlook for the gold Democrats is not very cheering when they turn their faces in the direction of the so-called Democracy. In New lork, New Jersey, Virginia, Ohio, Kentucky, Iowa, and in pretty much very state where there is to bo an election this fall, the free coinage of silver is being made a leading issue, and such "leaders" of that party as William Jennings llryanand Richard Parks Bland are loudly proclaiming that there is no place in that party for men who do not believe in the free and unlimited coinage of silver. WlIATKVBB else may be said of Gov. Hastings, it cannot be alleged that he has been or is unmindful of the general interests of thu state, or that he has withheld from the Legis lature his clear outspoken views in regard to the duty of its members. In a special message sent to both Houses, published in last evening's Hkkald, the Governor indulged in some very plain talk upon subjects of vital importance. He advised shortening of the session, as far as it could be done consistently with the public interest. Furthermore, he cautioned our lawmakers against in dulgence in extravagance in any direction, because of the fact that tiiere is a prose!t of a deficit of several millions in the treasury. He says it being practically impossible at this t iuta to iuerease the Income to meet ex i -Mug outlay, the only other ulterimtiw is to reduce expenditures m that the expenses shall not exceed the income. He deprecates thus: The enormous expense incurred by investlgntlntr eotrmilttce, Home of them, pprhaiw, of doubtful mu'esHlty, anl thp liberality with which public funds have been heretofore need in contented election canes, have very properly arrentetl public attention, and 1 earnestly urge upon your hon orable bodies the ctirtaihuent of ex penses of this character." The message generally Is full of sound ad vice and wholesome suggestion, and should have the effect of bringing about economy in the appropriations and such attention to business as will bring about an early adjournment. By the decisive vote nf 42 to 19, the senate yesterday adopted an amendment to the tariff bill pluclnu raw cotton, the great prod uct nf the south, on the dutiable Hat at 20 per cent, ad valorem. It Is the first time in the history of tariff legislation that a duly on cotton has been Incor porated In a bill. The amendment was proposed by Mr. Bacon, of Georgia, on Iris Individual responsibility, and with out the approval of the finance com mittee, which thus far has been requis ite to the success of every amendment except a minor one which went through by default. The amendment led to a spirited de bate, Democratic senators disclosing a wide difference of views and at times exchanging sharp personal criticism, nn the final vote six Democrats Bacon and Clay of Georgia, McBnery of Louisiana. McLaurln and Tillman of South Carolina, and Rawlins of Utah voted with the Republicans for the Bacon amendment, while the nega tive vote was solidly Democratic, with one exception Kyle, Populist. The debate on cotton took up moat of the day, and but little progress was made on the bill. Early In the day the sugar schedule was passed over and the agricultural schedule taken up. Less than two pages were disposed of during the day. The paragraph on cat tle went over, but the balance of the agricultural schedule, up to and In cluding paragraph 228, was agreed to as reported, all amendments except that of Mr. Bacon being rejected. Republican Senators' Cltuoui, . Washington, June 9. The Republl-. can senators' csucub yesterday was well attended, nearly every Republi can senator In the city being present. After the caucus adjourned Senator AI tlrlch said It was very successful, that the Republicans were going to stand together on allschedules of the bill, and that an agreement would be reach ed where differences of opinion existed. No agreement was reached In regard to the Hawaiian treaty, and the com mittee Is expected to report some amendments or a provision which will supply the provision In the house. The Important feature of the caucus was the determination reached to vate to gether as a party, which insures fa vorable action on all contested sched ules and the passage of the bill as ap proved by the majority. He dressed more like a tramp than a wealthy man, and lived and died In a house which was only five feet wide. This place has been caMed the "Spite" house. It was built because the Bitr roundlng property owners refused to meet Richardson's terms for the nar row loti He afterwards refused fabu lous sums for the little piece of ground on which his house stood, amid the tall houses on the best part of Lexington avenue.
