New Combine
1'iiit.AtiRI.PitiA, May 3. The iniprewlon
Is now general that harmony will shortly re
unite the Ilepubllran party factions in this
city, and may extend to Pittsburg. By the
middle of this week the new combine of
ward leaders will be formally organized at a
meeting to lie held for that purpose.
It i claimed there are now twenty two
wjhIi. containing 831 divisions, and couse
ciuenMy entitled to 5R1 delegates 111 a county
I convention, iu the harmony movement one
I nf tho ward leaders stated that In calculating
the number of delegates the new combination
j would control, the entire number from each
of t lie wards represented In the movement
was counted. It ii argued that tboe which
, i mild not be controlled by their representa
tives would he more than ottt by delegates
j from oilier wards, so that tho new Combine
I li ronfldt ut that it Is already In a position to
dhtnte nominations, if not to enforce
hitiminy.
In thii connection it might lie staled that
Senator Durham will have mote than ordl
' muy Influence In the federal appointments
1 in this eity, and that he is heartily In favor
( of the harmony movement. Senator tjuay
1 as practically decided to loavo the appoint
ments iu the eastern part of the state to Sena
tor Penrose. This was made plain the other
day when nn applicant from an eastern
county called upon Qury for appointment,
and tbe caller was Informed that Penrose's
endorsement was tho great requUHo.
Tills Is construed to mean that Senator
Penrose will also name tho next Postmaster,
Collector and Surveyor of the Tort, Naval
OIHcer, Superintendent of tho Mint, and
other ofllcera in Philadelphia.
Sirs. Miles Hurled.
The funeral of Ellen, widow of Patrick
Miles, took place this morning from the resi
dence of her son-in-law, P. J. Gaughan, on
West Oak street. High mass was celebrated at
the Annunciation church and Interment mado
iu the Parish cemetery. A large number of
friends of tbe family attended the funeral.
The pall bearers wore J. B. and P. B. Mona
glian, Edward Burke, Jamos Wade, E. F.
Gallagher ami Michael Dougherty. The ser
vices at the church were conducted hy Hov.
Father O'lteilly, the pastor. After tho abso
lution he preached a touching and impressive
sermon. Ho said Mrs. Miles had lived
several years beyond tho patriarchal ago of
70 years, and that her last moments had been
consoled by the sacraments of the religion in
whicli she had n simple and abiding faith.
"Fur twenty-five years, "said Father O'Kellly,
"She wasn near neighbor, living just across
the street, aud never in thoso years have 1
i-een her that I did not marvel at her in
dustry and feel odified at her circumspect
conduct aud manner of minding her own
btibineBS. If sitting stilt her hands wero en
gaged in some useful employment; If sho
walked abroad it was still for tho purposo of
uttcudiug to sumo duty. In this she re
minds us of tho MartEa of the scriptures,
whose duties were about the household.
But the deceased went farther, for liko Mary
sho also looked after hor spiritual affairs.
She was unostentatious iu her piety, and
frequently she partook of tho Bread of Life
at tho altar. Altogether there were many
tilings about her lifo that are commendable,
and she is now enjoying the reward which
God has provided for hor, for her piety no
less than fur her industry."
