Columbus, O., April 21. The llrst electrocutions In Ohio took place short ly after mk'night in the annex of the Ohio penitentiary. The oleotroeutlon chair and appliances have been In piaco Ih the- old execution room for several Weeks. They are similar to those used In! New York. The electrocution" of William Unas was net for April 8, but owlne to the burning1 out of the armature on tho oleotroeutlon dynamo the electrocution had to be postponed, and Governor Bushnell fixed the date so that Haas would .be electrocuted on the day set for the execution of William Wiley. A. new armature, to be used .only for electrocutions, was secured. To prevent .any possibility of the armature being1 tampered with an ox tra guard was placed In the dynamo room. Haae and Wiley, tha condemned men, passed their last day In reading and. religious 'devotions. Tha' death warrants were read to them during -the morning. Haas, who was only 19 years of ale, had been Indifferent to his fate ever sines HI arrival at the annex. Haas was tha drat to be electrocuted. The condemned men were nervy to the last. The crime for which Haas was elec trocuted was thg criminal assault and murder of Mrs. Brader, the only oc cupant of tljo-house except himself. After cutting her throat with a razor, to cover up the crime Haas set fire to the house and fled. William Wiley murdered hia wife on the West bide of Cincinnati 20 days after Haas committed the above crimp. MAN AND THE APE. Dr, Sptncer Trotter Illustrates Points of Hcscmblance and Dissimilarity. Dr. Snencer Trotter of Swarthmoro col- logo delivered an illustrated lecturo at tho Aoadomy of Natural Sciences on "Animal Characteristics of Man." "In his brain struoturo." said Dr. Trot tor, "man Is ovldontly closely alHpd with tho npo, and tho dlffercnoo bctwoon man and any of tho hlghor npos In this rospoot la not so great at that which oxists bo tween tho apes and monkeys, taken-as a whole, and the other mammalian orders. And as Huxley says, 'The dlilorenco In weight of brain between tho highest and lowost man Is far greater, both relatively and absolutely, than botween tho lowest man and Inchest ape.' " Speaking of heredity. Dr. Trotter said It was a well known fact that the young of all animals tend to rovort to tho ances trnl type. "Thus," said he, "In a group oi closely alllod spooles of birds whoro some of tho species are solidly colored and some havo mottled plumngo and spotted breasts the young of tho solidly colored bpccIos oro often conspicuously mottled and spot ted. This Is notably the caso with tha thrnshoa, especially In tho caso or our rorj ln. So among mammals tho young of many snoclos exhibit marltlns qulto dif ferent from their parents. Lion cubs, for oxaiuple, show spots which ally thcin to tho leopards and tnolr Kinu. "Tho human infant presents many slm Ian features, which, though shocking ta tho fond parent, point novertheloss toward a oominou anthropoid ancestry. Among the most reinnrkahlo of those ovanescent characteristics aro tho plantar furrows or creases on tho solo of tho foot in newborn babies, which, as Dr. Louis Robinson has pointed out, proscnt n striking similarity to tho crousos on tho foot of tho apo. Dr. Robinson Unx also shown that not only tha planti i- fiit tow, buttilgo tho great mobility of tin . '. In young babies must havo had tholror. l.i in on arboreal nncestor possoss- lno a prcbunslblo foot. The disproportion nto strength of grip In tho hand of a young baby and tho tendenoy whloh it shows to cling to things further support the theory of an arboreal llfo on tho part of man's archaic ancestor. "Tho young apo is quite human in tho relatlvo foaturcs of tho head and face, while tho adult degenerates toward a moro bostlal character. At tho samo tlmo tno adult man approaches moro toward a low er typo In oertaln features, notably in tno greater development of tho brows and fa cial elements, and his scnllo characters aro docidodly simian." in conclusion, Dr. Trotter said that, whllo his ancestors may havo had advan tages lnjirotectlon from tho weather by n hairy covering and o more keen sense of hoarlng and smell, man had unnuostloncu advantages in tho development of his men tal faculties and tho skill of his hand. Philadelphia Press. A Novel Itarometer It has takon a clover Frenchman to dis cover a kind of barometer which may bo safely colled unique. Perhaps lie may reply: "Tho general feels soft Ho would advise you taking an umbrella." On tho other hand, If tho gingerbread U hard and unyloldlng to tho touoh, It Is safe to go rartn in one's best attire, umbrellnloss and ooulldonu The Frenchman declares that tho gen eral has never yet proved unworthy of the oonfldence plaoed in him, and would ad vita all whose purse will not allow them to purchase a barometer or aneroid, to seo what tho local bakcx, oun do for them in the gingerbread Hue. Ills Specialty Was tho Signatures of Early American Patriots, and Mis Forgeries Aro Trcnsured hy Many a Collector, llovr lie Was Detected. Ono of tho most expert of nu'tograph forgers flourished In this country and for a tlmo enjoyed a success only equaled by that of the notorious "Vrain Lucas, the Frenohmau who victimized Til. Charles, the savant, to the tune of 40,000 francs. Tho name of this rogtio was Robert Spring, aud though tho actual scene of his rusoal- lties was not New York, there aro many In Now York's collection that are jnfectcd by his fabrications, and that, too, in the department now held in highest esteem that of American history, and especially of Washlngtonlana. Spring wns a Londoner born, and served his time as indentured clerk to n scrivener of that city. This person, Furnival by namo, was a noted bibliophile, and it was in his employ that Spring doubtloss ac quired his knowlcdgo of old books and his marvelous facility In using tho pen. It was In 1S45 that Spring came to this country and opened a brlo-a-brac shop In Haltimoro, dealing also in raro books and autographs. In the last lino his business was largo and profitable, as he made tho autographs himself, needing no other tools than tho stump of a quill pen, a bottlo of brown Ink and a few blank leaves taken from the volumes on his shelves, Enoour aged Ly his success, ho overdid the thing, and Raltlmoje becarao undcslrablo as a place of residence So he removed to Phil adelphia In tho early fifties (1854 it is sup posed) and opened another ourloslty store on South street, west of Uroad, and for n numbor of years did well and evon pros- pored. Collecting autographs was a fashion of the time, und Spr)ng fabricated thorn by tho ream, asserting In later years that ho hod sold at least 000 Wushlngtons, besides many Clymors, Franklins, Hopklnsons, Joffersons, Whlpples and others. He was very partial to the signatures of tho sign ers, in foot, and supplied them to tho trade ad libitum. Ho not only had much knowl edge of out of tho way Revolutionary his tory, but also was an oxcollont narrator, and is his convivial moments a most amus ing companion. His frauds must have been almost numberless, for ho did a large business, both In Now York and Canada, selling to n lawyer in this olty 00 bogus letters from Benedict Arnold and his wife Margaret, whllo ho supplied tho erudite Kanuoks with many Franklins and Wash lngtons. Suspicion was first aroused against him whon tho library of ono of the early Amor lean judges, a connection of tho Washing ton family, was sold at auction in Phila delphia. Many of tho books had In them tho autograph of Washington, and theso naturnlly brought high prices. But it was thought extremely odd, to say tho least, whon In ono of tho volumes a letter of Spring's was found, worded ambiguously and offering his servicos to somo ono in terested in tho salo, a nephew of the judge. Moreover, a copy of a book printed in 1801 was also graced with Washington's signa ture It Is dillloult to seo how Washington could havo written in o book published after his death, and this posthumous pro coediuu provoked much taik, woll Informed bookmon being of tho opinion that Spring's omnivorous Industry in deception had boon employed In giving n fictitious voluo to volumes with tho nutocruphs. Howovor, this was mero suspicion, and came to nothing. Perhaps, Indeed, if Spring had led a regular llfo ho might never havo been more than dimly suspected. But for his drink ing habits It Is a question whether ho would have boon dojeoted at all. Wary and reticent when sober, ho was just the oppo site when drunk, and toward the last of his life this was his usual condition. Whllo intoxicated ho would mako no secret of his forgorlcs, but would toko up a pen nnd show his skill by writing a Ponua Cly mer or a Morris. To a friend he declared that ho had sold to a country clergyman an autograph of Pontius Pilate for $3, and he desoribed with much humor tho trcm bllug eagerness with whloh thlB modorn Dr. Primrose secured his fancied prize. Ills actual detection was duo to a Dr. Davis of Philadelphia, to whom he had Bold o number of the signatures, of tho slgnors. By oooidont ono of them became wet and faded out. It was then found that It had not been written with Ink, but With a brownish pigment which tho forger hlmeolf had mode. Dr. Davis' inquiries made Spring's swindling manifest. Spring was arrested and taken beforo Mayor Mo Michael, who declared that thero was no exeuso for such pranks. "Collectors," ho proceeded to say, "had tho means of test ing tho characters of theso writings by comparison with numerous authentic spool mens of the handwriting of the Immortal Washington, to whom wo are so Inuobt ed," etc. Accordingly, A Washington nu tograph was borrowed for the moment from the Independence hall collection about tho genuineness of which thero could be, of course, no doubt. This autograph waB laid side by side with the forged pa per. Their agreement were startling, but confusion and tribulation followed wj)n Spring said quietly: Why, gentlemen, tnat's one oi mine too!" For a few seconds there was silence, and then unmitigated disgust at themselves among the collectors assembled in court. Then tho mayor told spring that the dig nlty of tho law would be vindicated in his case some day, and the forger left the room as soon as possible. Deprived by exposure of his former income, he lived meanly and miserably, waiting In wretched dlsslpa tloh tho few dollars he made by petty forgeries. Finally his habits demoralized him completely, and he hecamo reckless In his swindling and escaped imprisonment frequently only on the plea of extreme poverty. At length he died In the l'enn sylvanlo hospital of asthma; aggravated by Intemperance. (Though he lias boon dead many years, his fabrications still ex iat in large numbers and enrloli many ool .lections. Valueless papers ate hard to truce, and, moreover, somo collectors would object to tho tracing. It is not al ways agreeable to havo the authontluity of nne's collection questioned. New York fiun.
