A great indignation meeting was held here yesterday in order to protest against the bombard ment on Sunday by warships of the powers of the insurgent camp near Canea. Shouts were raised for war, and tlie speakers vehemently declared that the oountry wns now fully de termined to sacrifice Its blood and treasure In aid of Crete. Premier Dely annis addressed a crowd of people from the terrace In front of the ministry of finance, and declared that the cabi net was In uerfect accord with the nation, which might be assured that the government will debits duty. The minister of foreign affaire has called at the foreign embassies and has lodg ed a protest against the bombardment. Greece has declared that if the bom bardment of Insurgent positions In the Island of C'unea Is repeated she will break off diplomatic relations with the pouerg. It Is also stated that Asslm Bey, the Turkish minister at Athens, threatens thnt Turkey will break off her relations unless the Greek troops are withdrawn from Crete. Later reports are to the effect that the English men-of-war opened the bombardment. The others followed. Tho Kaserln Augusta fired melinite shells. The commander of tho G resit man-of-war Hydra cleared for action in caBe the necessity should arise. Some shells fell In the town of Canea, raising clouds cf dust. Fifteen Chris tians, including three nuns of the Ellas convent, were wounded by the bom bardment. Five thousand insurgents arrived within half an hour after fir ing commenced. The English, Italian and Itusslan consuls have returned to Canea from Selinos, accompanied by 170 Mussul man fugitives. They were unable at ilrst to hold conferences with the chiefs of the belligerents, who are conduct ing n war of extermination. Both sides have mutually massacred prisoners. Two thousand civilians and 2B0 Turk ish soldiers are resisting the advance of the insurgents with three cannons. Their position is extremely critical. The consuls proceeded to Cadano on board a ship. The Christians there. although advised of their arrival, fired on the consuls, lp spite of the white flag of truce which they carried. The consuls returned to Selinos, where the Christians occupied fresh positions. Here, also, the consulB were fired upon, the shots falling all around the ship. innally they met the insurgent lead ers at Selinos, where they proposed an armistice or one week. This proposi tion was accented bv both Mussul mans and Christians. The Insurgents have rehotsted their flag at Halena, but they have not fired on the Turks, who have planted a flag l,6U0 yards from the Insurgent posi tion. The Greek ship Thessalia has re turned to Mllos, having failed to land arms and provisions anywhere on the Cretan coast, owing to the foreign warships. The Greek warships here have been ordered to start again for Crete immediately, under the com mand of Prince George. It is believed that It has been decid ed to call out three more classes of re serves. It Is impossible for the king of Greece to draw back. If he should do so there would be neither crown nor government within 21 hours. Anarchy In Oreto. Paris, Feb. 23. An oincial dispatch received here from Admiral Pottler, the commander of the French squad ron off Canea, Island of Crete, state that the admirals have Informed their respective governments that anarchy continues to Increase in Crete, and that they cannot any longer he an swerable for the avoidance of conflicts unless they are authorised to prevent the landing of all provisions and the powers obtain the recall of the areek troops and warships. The use of the surgeon's knife Is be coming so general, resulting fatally in such a large number of cases, as to occasion general alarm. Mr. William Walpole, of Walslitown, South Dakota, writes; "About three years ago, there came under my left eye a little blotch about the size ot a sraan pea. It grew rapidly, and shooting pains ran iu every direction. I became alarmed and consulted a good doctor, who pronounced it can ter, and said that it must be cut out. This I would not consent to, having little faith in the Indiscriminate use of the knife. Read ing of the many cures made by S. S. S., I determined to give that medicine a trial, and after I had taken it a few days, the cancer became irritated and began to discharge. This after awhile ceased, leaving a small scab, which finally dropped off, and only a healthy little scar remained to mark the place where the destroyer had held full sway. A Real Blood Remedy.
