of the troops. Crown Prince Constan

The troops then mai-lied past In the

crown prince, with his staff, was at
the head of the men, and conducted
them to the railway station at Athens,
en ruute for the port of Piraeus, tho
populace meanwhile cheering for Crete,
the army and the royal family. Sim
ilar scenes of nthuslasm were also
witnessed duilng the embarkation of
tho soldiers. The arrival of the trans
torts has already been reported from
U.e Island of Mllo. All of the Grecian
newspapers hall the departure of the
troops with expressions of delight.
There Is mucli activity at the palace,
King George personally directing af
fairs connected with the crisis.
It is stated that the British admiral
commanding in the Cretan waters has
orders to prevent any collision at sea
between the Turks and the Greeks.
Prince George ai rived at Canea on
Saturday. He received a vlBli from the
commanders of the forelen men-of-war.
Later he returned to Mllo with
the flotilla.
The foreign ministers nt Athens met
nt the Frenoh legation for the purpose
of considering the situation. It is be
lieved that they decided to address
further representations to the Grecian
government, which, replying to their
recent statements, declared that the
government, having full knowledge of
the situation, had not hastened to as
sume the whole responsibility for the
measures it had taken.
Grecian officers starting for Crete

Canea, Island of Crete, Feb. 15. The
Chrlstians occupied the heights sur
rounding tho town yesterday morning
and began to bombard Canea. As soon
as the firing commenced Prince Georgi
Berovltch, governor of Crete, with 30
recently enrolled Montenegrin gen
darmos, boarded the Russian man-of-
war. The Greek conBul also embark
ed on board another vessel. Tho
Turks, from the fortress, replied to tho
fire of the Christians. The fighting
was attended with bloodshed. Tho
military governor has been removed
from his post. The foreign consuls
also embarked on board the various
vessels lying oft the town of Canea.
The Greek consul at Herakllon went
on board the Greek warBhlp Nauar
chos Miaulls. The Christians at Her
akllon are also hurrying on board the
ships. Fighting ocourred around Ha
lepa Saturday. After a brisk fusillade
the Turks dislodged the Christians and
occupied Akrotiri hills. The Frenoh
consul was obliged to quit his country
house at Halepa and return to his of
ficial residence at Canea.
The report Is current here that the
Turkish authorities, considering that
resistance to the cause of the Chris
tians In Crete Is hopeless, have request
ed tha foreign commanders to ccupy
the town. The commanders of the
men-of-war have re-erred the bubj. t
matter to their respective governments
end asked lor Instructions.
The residence of the consuls was in
a state of great trepidation Saturday,
owing to the approach of the Insur
gents, who, joined it is stated by Greek
volunteers, assembled lrt great force
on Akrotiri peninsula, made an ad
vance in the neighborhood. The Hel
lenic flag was hoisted on the arrival
of the Greek warships, and was dis
played on the summit of an adjoining
hill. All of the members of the families
of the consular agents were transfer
red to the warships. The Greek con
sulate was garrisoned, with an lmpres-
Uatve show of force, by native Christiana
and sailors in anticipation of an at
tnok from the Mohammedans from the
vicinity of Canea.
The Mohammedans at Canea were
in a stata of extreme excitement, and
owing to rumors of afi intended attack
upon the consulates at Canea special
precautions were taken at the offices
of the British consul. About 400Baehl
Bazouks and a company of regulars
hurried out from Canea and attacked
the Christians. The Christiana were
finally repulsed, and pursued into the
Interior of the peninsula. Subsequently
tha bishop of Canea Invoked the aid
of the consul.
The governor demanded a written
assurance from the consuls that the
Greek fleet is not to molest the trans
port conveying troops to Sltla. This
transport was compelled to return Fri
day by the firing from a Greek war
ship. This assurance was given, with
the further pledge to prevent Greek
warships from bombarding the town,
provided the Mohammedan population
would abstain from acts of violence.

Washington, Feb. 15. The arrange
ments for the Inauguration of Precl-flent-elert
MrKlnlcy two weeks from
next Thursday aie rapidly nearing
completion, and the Indications are
Ibat in point of bil.liancy and attrac
tiveness the ceremonies, the decora
tions and the festivities Incident to in
auguration week will be more lavish
than those of former years. Tn the
decorations of the ballroom finer re
sults are expected than ever before.
All spectacular effects will be avoided,
and a more artistic and harmonious
arrangement of (lowers, lights and
bunting will be secured. About Jis.uuti
will be spent by the Inaugural commit
tee in decorating the main ballroom
and the private rooms set apart for the
use of the presidential and vice presi
dential parties.
The great height of the court of the
pension building, where the ball will be
held, will be overcome by bunting fes
tooned from the center of each of the
three divisions of the court to the top
of the second gallery. The bare walls
everywhere and all of the smaller pil
lars will be covered with bunting as a
background for the flowers and greens
which will be the prominent features
of the decorations. The bunting and
thousands of tiny electric fairy lamps
will be used principally to bring out
In greater relief the tloral designs.
The president and vice president,
with their families, will attend the ball,
and will be In charge of a reception
committee of which Major General Nel
son A. Miles la chairman. The cost of
tickets to the ball has been fixed at G
for each person, and Jl extra If supper
Is desired. In answer to many Inquiries
received at headquarters it may be
stated that no Invitations to the ball

of the senate and the speaker of the
house. The last concert, Saturday
night, will be in honor of the people
of the United States. Admission to
each concert will he BO cents.
Notwithstanding the fact that the
Pennsylvania National Guard finds It
Impossible to attend the Inauguration,
the probabilities are that the parade
will be very large. General Horace
Porter, of New York, with the mem
hers of hlB staff, Is busy with the de
tails of arranging the divisions. Gen
eral Porter will act as grand marshal,
and will have as his chief of staff Mr,
A. Noel Blakeman, of New York city;
Colonel H. C. Corbln, of the U. S. A.,

The parade will be organized In two
grand divisions, one civic and the oth
er military. General Grenvllle M.
Dodge will be bhlef marshal ot the first
grand division, to be composed of mil
itary organizations. This military
grand division will be sub-dlvlded into
three separate divisions. The first di

States troops as well as the naval bat
talions. The second brigade will be
composed of the National Guard of the
District ot Columbia, 1,500 strong, and

the various states, headed respectively
by the governor and staff of eaoh state.
The third division of the military

veteran organizations, and will be
commanded by General O. O. Howard
The civic division will be command
ed by Mr. B. H. Warner, of tha city of
Washington, as chief marshal, and
will be made up of civic clubs of all
descriptions. Prominent In this grand
division will be the Republican Nation
al League, of which Mr. D. D. WOod
mansee, of Cincinnati, 'Its president,
will act as marshal.
It Is estimated that there will be
from 40,000 to 60,000 people. In the pa
rade, and In order to move so vast an
army in the space of time allowed
they will be so formed that they can
be marched past a given point at the
rate ot 12,000 an hour. Conspicuous
among the civic organizations will be
the delegation of about 200 students
from the Indian school at Carlisle, Pa.
The decorations of the city promise
to be unusually attractive. The review
ing stands, for the first time, will be
decorated by the Inaugural committee,
and will be in accordance with a gen
eral design furnished by the- Floral
Exchange, of Philadelphia. The presi
