Threw negro murderers nre dead. Thojmre Arch Joiner , nnd John Johnson, who nt tho Inst mo- ' Dient oonfossed tlielr xullt of tho killing I of Ave of the Cotton family, nnd Gus Will- 1 lams, alias Morrlssey, who shot nnd killed . his young wife. Tho bodies of the two 1 former were found hanging to A limb of a stout oak In the woods nbout half a mile from the house in whloh they butchered their vlotlms. Johnson's story of the slaughter of tho j Cotton family was peculiarly brutal, lie 1 aald that he had always liked the family, i nnd would not hare harmed them had It not been for the fact that he wns bullied into what he had done. He said lie armed 1 himself with an nz, not to hurt any of the people In the house, but to prevent their 1 'escaping, M he had been told to watoh a j door. The murder, Johnson snld, was planned by Hud Moltntght, a white man, who was a suitor of the girl, Maude Miller, whose mother, Mrs. Cotton, whipped her for allowing MoKnight's attentions. This is the only motive he knew for the orliue. He said at first that Arch Joiner shot Cot ton, tho head of the housoliold.wlthngiin, then struok Merven Stevens, the son of Mrs. Agnes Stevens, with an ax on the forehead, knocking him book on the bed and killing him. Joiner finished the men and then went into the room which was occupied by Mrs. Stevens, Mrs. Cotton and Lizzie Miller, with Maude and several children, aud killed the three woman. Three hundred men approached the oourt house, the greater part.on horseback, and immediately began searohlng the deputies, so that they oould get the keys. After a delay of about ten minutes the men found Deputy Wnlnwrlght In one of the rooms of the hotel and forced him to deliver up the keys before ho had time to make an attempt to hide them. The work of getting into the prison was simple. Johnson saw his exeoutloners and slipped on his shirt, so that when they opened his coll door he would bo ready. Jolnor was told that ho would be taken, too, and Immediately set up a wall that could be hoard from outside. He sworo that ho was Innocent, but the men who were to tako oharge of all three threw him down and tied his hands bahlnd his back. Johnson asked one of the mon who woro tying his hands If they meant to burn him or not. He was told that the orowd meant to do so. "Williams claimed that he shot his wife accidentally while endeavoring, at 1 o clock In the morning, to kill a rat with a Wlnohester. He was jeered at and told that rat killing was a bad prnotlce, and he should be hung for It. Knowing that his fate was sealed, Williams said nothing moro, going with his captors quietly. Tho threo negroes wero lod out into tho court groen, whore the horBomon sur rounded them and waited a little while until the captain of the squad announced his readiness to depart. Beforo going tho captain thanked tho people, and said that they woro thero lor business only, ana 11 any one wanted to join In and tako a hand In tho execution thoy were welcome. The throo captlvos, with long ropos attached to tholr nooks, woro lod by horsemen to tho Little Zlon church, on Oak street, In this plaoe, and there It was deolded to hang Williams to a tree that did duty be fore as a gallows. Ono ot tho men climbed up the oak and fastened tho ropes, whllo another slipped tho nooso over the unfor tunate s head. Whllo this was going on Johnson snld to tho mon about him that If they hung Arch Joiner, whom ho had Implicated in previous statements, thoy would be kill ing on Innocent man, as the men who Tielped htiu wore not In tho country. For his pains he was given t rip over tho head with a heavy piece ol rope, whloh flu l.e toil him for tho time. Williams was told to pray nnd ho did so, after whloh ho was ordered to get upon a horse. He became contrary and It was necessary for some of the men to lift him upon the baok of the animal. Ho was then quickly strung up aud the party pro ceeded with the other two prisoners. Jolnor and -Johnson walked nbout a mile, when Johnson said he oould go no further, as he was exhausted. A wagon was procured and both negroes hustlod Into It The rain oamo down In torrents and tho night was tllemnl, and this, oom blnod with tho grotesque appearance of overy ono as they rode slowly along muf fled In big overcoats was enough to fill tho hoarts of tho negroes with deepest nwo. Thero were probably 2,000 In line, all ox coodlngly ' lerly and quiet. When-th iy arrived at the Cotton place Jolnor set up a piteous moan, and begged his onpUjrs to shoot him, as he preferred death by being shot to any other mode. He then requested to bo permitted to light Johnson, saying that Johnson had got him Into all the trouble. Johnson signi fied his deslro to tight and they wero given an opportunity to gratify their passion for a fisticuff. Johnson, though muoh smaller than Joiner, put up a good fight, and dealt Joiner some telling blows. The speotaclo of the two men, on the very brink of tho great hereafter, fighting has probably never been witnessed before. It wns at first deolded to shoot Jolnor and burn Johnson at the stake, but the mode of death wns afterwards changed to hanging for both of them. At this time tho negroes were brought face to faoe with each other, nnd Joiner confessed, saying that he had killed Mr. John Cotton and Mr. Mervln Stevens, and Johnson reiter ated his first confession, made when ha was first caught, to the effoct that he killed Mrs. John Cotton, Miss Agnes Miller and Miss Lizzie Miller. After this statement by the negroes the men aonveyed them several hundred yards from the Cotton residence and hung them side by side, and fired a volley of shots Into their bodlei. Joiner's head was al most shot off aud Johnson was filled with bullet holes. Soothing for burns, scalds, cliappedfhands and Hps. Healiuj for outs and sores.
