When about in front of Burkhart's storo Mrs. Bogart stepped aside to allow them to pass. Four did so, two passing on tho iunor side and the other two on the othor. The fifth passed closoto Mrs. Bogart, and in doing so turned his head and spat violently into her face. Mrs. Bogart carried a satchol In one hand and held her cloak closed with the othor. Had her hands been freo she would undoubtedly have slapped tho loafer in the face. Sho mo mentarily stopped and glared at her insulter. One of the young men exclaimed in re proachful tones, "Teto,' what aro you doing?" The loafer who had spat in tho in offensive woman's face replied, "I ain'tdoing anything to her." Mrs. Bogart says sho continued down tho street. She was made exceedingly nervous by tho incident and sought momentary rest at a store, after which a gentleman escorted her home. Tho five young mon walked up Main street, and then turned and walked back to tho post office building. RILLED 01 fi RftlltROflD -T' .Awaiihmaii Met Death of Duty. at Ills Post HIS DEATH WAS INSTANTANEOUS. He First Stepped Ont of the Way of the Train That Killed Him on to a Side Track and Walked to His Death Near the Swltoh. A sad accident occurred at an early hour this morning, on the Lehigh valley railroad, near the red bridge, by which John Mc Donald, of North Plum alley, met his death. McDonald was employed as watchman on the railroad. He had held the position for seven yean and was a sober, oarcrol and dili gent man, so that at first his friends refused to credit tho news that he had been killed on the railroad. The circumstances of the accident were that McDonald was walking eastward on tho west bound track of the railroad wien he heard tho approach of tho east-bound minors' train that leaves town at 0:40 a.m. for the run to Mahonoy City and Delano. The train was in chargo of Conductor Koch and Engineer Scboup. McDonald stepped from the mnln track to tho siding a little east of the red bridge, and which is used to run coal trains to the Kehley Bun colliery, and continued walking eastward on the siding until lid al most reached tho junction of both tracks, when tho train struck him. It is believed that he became momentarily absent minded and supposed tho train had passed him. The train was stopped and tho crow hurried back to tho unfortunate man. They found him dead. Death had been instantaneous. The only mark upon the body was on ono side of the head, whero one of the cars had struck him and fractured tho skull. He was knocked from tho main track and escaped mutllatiou by tho wheels of the cars. Tho remains wero picked up and brought back to town on a freight train. McDonald was 50 years of ago and is sur vived by his wife and seven children, the youngest being a boy seven years of age. He had been connected with the section gangs on tho Lehigh Valley railroad for about twenty years and never met with an accident bo fore tho one through which he met his death. It has been erroneously stated that tho accident was duo to a cavo-in on the railread and that in avoiding the breach McDonald stepped upon the only track in use and in the front of tho train. The cave-in is near Yatosville and about a quarter of a mllo cast of the placo whore McDonald was killed. It is a large one and extends under the east-hound track, rendoring it useless for traffic and one track is in use for several hundred yards east of that point. A large gang of navvies was engaged tQ-day in fill ing the breach with culm taken from one of tho Packer collieries. Coming, Florida on Wheols, to L. V. depot. Last Night's Assembly. JOHJJ SHEUM IS THE Wt The Ohio Statesman Will Uead flcKin- ley's Cabinet. GOSSIP ANEHT THE WAR PORTFOLIO General Kussel A. Alger, of Michigan, and Senator Hawley, of Connecticut, Now Spoken of for the Succession to Secretary Lamont. Washwotoh, Jan. 14. Speculation as to who would be the Ohio member In the cabinet of the president-elect has persist ently hovered about the names of Sena tor Sherman and Hon. Mark Hanna, the chairman of the national committee, the former being mentioned in connection with the state and treasury portfolio and the latter In connection with the head of the treasury and postofBce department. It has been known for some time, however, that Mr. Hanna's ambition was a seat in the United States senate. The retirement of Ohio's veteran senator to accept tho position of premier In Mr. MoKlnley's cabinet will probably open the way to n gratification of this ambition. Mr. Sherman's term as senator would expire two years hence, March 4, 1899. The vacancy created by Mr. Sherman's retlremont will be filled by appointment by Governor Bushnell, pending tho as sembling of tho Ohio legislature In Janu ary, 1898. It Is understood that tho old war In Ohio between the Sherman and Foraker factions has ceased, and that complete harmony has been rostored among tho leaders. This carrios with it tho strong Implication that Governor Bushnell will appoint Mr. Hanna to tho vacancy In the senate when Mr. Sherman stops out to assume the grave responsibil ities connocted with tho hoad of the de partment of state. Sonator Sherman declines to make any statement relatlvo to tho important an nouncement which was made last night, John snEniiAN but this In no wiso militates against Its authenticity. Tho definite announcement that Mr. MoKlnley has soloctod tho koy stono of tho arch upon whloh his adminis tration will reH recalls tho fact that It was Mr. Cleveland's selection of Judgo Walter Q. Gresham for secretary of state of the present administration which was first given to tho public. As socrotnry of state Mr. Sherman will round out a bril liant publio enreor which began forty-two voars ftirn in t.hn hnnoa nf mnmutnt ,,tlTna and has covered four terms In the lower Drancn or congress and six terms In tho upper houso, bosldos four years at the head of the treasury department under Mr. Hayes' administration.
