A regular meeting or the Borough Couucll was held last evening with Messrs. McGuire, Coakley, Schoppe, lloehm, Straughn, D. K. James, Gable, ltceso and Edward Murphy. In the absonco of President James, Mr, Straughn presided at the meeting. After Mr. Iioohm, of the roads and high ways conimltteo, made report on work dono and the announcement that tho weather will not permit any more work this season in laying crossings, etc., Mr. Straughn an nounced that the finance committee had almost completed Its work on the 1891 tax duplicate and that Tax Collector Scanlan has made a GO-day payment of a little more than (4,000 to the borough and $7,000 to the School hoard. Mr. Med u ire moved that the Schuylkill Traction Company bo taxed for tho six cars it runs into tho borough, and it was so de cided. On motion of Mr. Gablo It was decided that the tax rate remain tbe samo as last year 8 mills for borough purposes and 8 for water. Mr. Rceso, of the lire apparatuscommlttee, reported that all fire plugs liad been tested and put lu good condition. It was finally decided that all boxes remain in their present locations aud two new boxes be pur chased to meet the recommendations. Mr. D. K. Tho room and stationery committee Is to present an estimate at the next meeting for putting the Council room ill suitable condi tion, Including re-papering, new carpet and individual desks. Mr. McGulro wanted to know what had becomo of tho borough's suits for collections against the Schuylkill Traction Company and tho question was referred to the law committee, which will look up the cases. This brought up a discussion of tbe condi tion of paving along tho Schuylkill Traction lice on West Coal street aud resulted In a motion by Mr. Gable being eanled to tho effect that tbe law commltteo proceed to compel tho compauy to fix the parts com plained of, that the road be laved to tbe borough limits, and that the committee be authorized to employ additional counsel if necessary. The sanitary condition of a gutter at the south end of Main street was a subject of discussion and tho matter was referred to tbe sanitary committee to havo tho nuisance abated, Mr. Gable announced that the extension to tbe bollor house at $ie pumping station of the public water works would be completed to-day.
