Mo.VTGOMnny, Aug. 4. Tho slzo of tho ' Democratic majority seems to bo nbout nil that remains In regard of yostonlny's Btnto election. Incomploto re turns from about half tho counties so far received Indicate Domocrntlo gains In all but Mobllo and Macon. In tho former tho Democrats appear to have lost 600 votos by stay-nt-homos, but tho county Is still In the Democratic column by BOO majority. In Macon county, which gave Oates n majority of 800 in 1891, tho rosult is doubt ful. Tho Domoorats, on tho othor hand, havo carried Tuscaloosa county by 1,000 majority. It gavo Kolb 200 majority two years ago. Marshall county, which wont for Kolb by 000, is close and probably Democratic. Loo county, which had a Populist mojority of 500, Is llko Marshall. Chambers county, with 400 majority for Kolb In '04, is In tho Deinocrntlc column. Talapoosa, with 000 majority for Kolb at tho last election, is close and may bo Dem ocratic. Fayotto, another Populist county, Is in tho doubtful column, as are also Coosa and Dokalb. In tho counties which Governor Oates carried two yoars ago thcro havo been In creased Democratic majorities in all so far hoard from oxcept two. In tho "black bolt" every county will roll up its usual largo Democratic majority, ranging from 8,000 to 0,000 each. Jefferson, which gavo Uatos loss than a hundred majority, will givo Johnston probably 600 majority. Oroen county increases Its Democratic majority. Tho samo Is truo in nearly every north Alabama county. In this section, where tho Populists aro stronger than olsowhoro In the state! that party lost heavily. The negroos in north Alabama gonerally voted for Goodwy n, tho Populist Republican nonilncofor governor, but tho numbor of Populists who voted for Johns ton was larger than tho negro voto cast for Goodwyn. Captain Johnston said this morning that ho stands to his original figures of 40,000 ns tho lowost estimate of his majority. From reports which ho has received ho feels llko increasing thoso figures to 60,000, with two-thirds of tho legislature Demo cratic. Stato Democratic Chairman J. B. Knox paid: "Johnston's majority Is probably larger than that of Governor Oates two years ago, which was 27,000. I think wo have tho legislature by an Increased ma jority." . At Populist state headquarters tho chairman was not on hand, being absent from tho city. 1 he secretary, 1' rank nlt zollo, said: "Wo havo received no returns whatever from tho stato. Wo feel that If wo have had a fair count Goodwyn has won. Tho slzo of his majority would bo governed by the number of votes the Dem crats.; steal In tho 'black belt.' I nm not preparing to givo out my figures, but I be lieve wo will carry eight counties which Oates got two years ago, and loo two which Kolb carried. Wo oxpoct tho horse back malls to show Goodwyn's election," P. G. Bowman, another Populist, snld ho bellovcd Goodwyn would havo from 15,000 to 20,000 majority, but had soon no returns upon which to base his claim, which was founded nltogothorou opinion. William Vaughau, chairmou of tho Re publican stato central committee, mado tho following statement: "Tho news of tho election in this stato Is meagro and noth ing llko an accurato estimate can bo made. But It Is evident that the returns will givo Joseph V. Johnston.Domocratlo candidnto for governor, u majority of somo 20,000. Tho usual count out has ovidently been roiorted to in order to defeat A. Most of tho testimony taken was unim portant, and was only Introduced to es tablish the fact of tho collision and tho deaths resulting. Superintendent Dray ton, of tho West Jersey railroad, coullned hlmsolf to an oxplanatton of tho operation of tho block signal system. According to Mr. Drayton, tho block system is tho near est npproach to a perfect safeguard against collision that human ingenuity has yet in vented, but the superintendent was forced to admit that Its perfect operation ilopomls upon tho parfoct oliedlonce of orders by railroad employes. A. T. Dlco. superintendent ot the At lantic City (Heading) railroad, said he was nt tho sccnoof thoaccldeutabout lOo'clock on tho night it occurred. Upon reaching tho sceno witnoss found thecautlon signal on the distant and danger on tho homo signal. Upon reaching n cautionary sig nal, said Mr. Dice, and uniting it in a horizontal position tho train must be pro pared to stop at tho homo signal unless tho right of way Is given by tho tower man. This system of signals applies equally to both roads, and nro given in tho same manner. Any danger signal can bo put In position at any time, but It Is not possiblo to givo "clear" slgnnls on all tracks at tho samo time When "clear" signals aro shown on ono track the signals on tho other track must necessarily bo locked nt danger. Tho tower operators nro paid 40 a month for twelve hours' work a day. Nicholas Ivong, the tower operator, the best witness of tho day, has bold that plaro about eight years. He was on duty on Thursday last, from 0:45 In tho morn ing until 0 :38 at night- Ho left tho tower nbout 0:40, being relieved by Goorge V. Hauser, who got thero on tho lteailing freight train nbout 0:33. Ueforo Hauser reported to the witness nil signals wore set at dangor. Ho was posltlvo of this. Ho did not remember anybody being around tho tower that day, and know nothing of a boy from Wilmington, Del., who was salil to havo boon seen In tho vicinity. As soon ns tho freight passed witness throw tho signal back, put tho tlmo on tho sheet, reported to tho main olllco nt Camden, and after exchanging a word or two with Hauser left tho tower and locked tho basement door. Ho started to walk homo. Tho signal tower and Its appliances were working properly that day. hen ho gavo tho clear way to tho freight nec essarily tho dangor signals went upagalnst every other track. Then no returned tnem all to tho normal danger signals. Witnoss hnd gouo about 800 feet away from tho tower when ho saw tho West Jersey upproachlng. Ho looked at the homo signal aud saw that tho West Jer sey hnd n clonr track. Thon ho heard tho whistlo of tho InlKinnd Heading express. When ho honrtl tho Heading whistlo tho train was alxnit a half inllo off. Ho paused and watched hor approach, expecting to see her stop. Tho Wost Jersey was going very slowly. As soon as ho saw tho posi tion of tho trains ho felt satisfied thnt tho Heading should havo had tho right of way, ns was customary. Tho tower man who relieved hliu, however, had gl von tho West Jersey tho right of way, and tho Heading train should havo como to n stop. The tower man has tho right to stop an ex press to lot n freight train pass If ho sees lit. Thon camo tho crash. Witness hurried to tho "tower and found Hausor thoro ulouo. Together thoy reported tho accident to the railroad companies by wire. In answer to further questions Long said that if a train rang tho track bell ho would not givo It tho right of way until he had looked ovor tho other tracks. If ho had been in tho tower nt tho tlmo ho cer tainly would havo given tho Heading tho right of way, uocuupo she had tho prior right, according to the agreement, and would havo crossed bef oro tho West Jersey got there.
