Unfortunately statements by somo of tho School Directors concerning tho rules of tho School Hoard as bearing upon tho charity entertainment to bo given at Ferguson's theatre have been misconstrued by somo of tho teachers and tbo result is that tho vory harmonious relations between tho Hoard and tho teachers aro now slightly strained! but fortunately the matter will havo no benritnt ono way, or tho other, upon tho entertain ment. It seems tlmtn few days ago somo of the Directors expressed tho opinion that recently tho teachers have not been treating tho School Hoard with tho courtesy duo It and i that twico within tho past two months tho teachers have undertaken projects expressly I prohibited by tho rules, and without asking j tho Hoard for a dispensation. Tho trans-1 gresslons were specified as sales through tho 1 schools of tickets forcntortuinmcnts. Tho teachers heard of tho remarks, but evidently misconstrued them as being bids for complimentary tickets for the approach ing entertainment, and when thb matter was discussed at their meeting on Monday even ing there were Mmo pretty flat-Hooted com ments, as one report of tho meeting goos, Ono teacher is charged wllh saying that tho statements were based upon Ignorance. Of course this by no means served to mend matters. Somo of the Dircctots were Very much nettled when they heard of it and ono has threatened to ask tho School Hoard to pass upon constructions of tho rules at its uoxt meeting. However, tho discussion over tho matter resulted in tho teachers adopting a resolution inviting tho School Directors to attend tho coming entertainment in a body and notify ing them that seats have been reserved for their use. This has added new fuel to tho I fire, as it tends to strengthen tho miscon- struction that was placed upon the original i statements, and ono Director wrote at tho bottom of a copy of tho resolution handed him "Tho Hoard should bo charitable and 1 pay for their seats. Now como the statements of several Direc-1 tors in justification of the original remarks. They state that (1) tho teachers havo violated tho rules of tho Board in advertising an entertainment "under tho auspices of the Shenandoah Public School Teachers" without consulting tho Board : and (2) that they havo transgressed rulo 15 of "The Duties of ! Teachers," which provides that teachers .1i1l ,,nt. ",lUril,t,, r,.ll IW. nr. ..it..' . ... ... 11....1L.... , , '., ... mem to ne uisinouicu or soiu in 1110 ficnooi I room by anyone, for the benefit of an enter-1 tainmcnt of any kind whatevor, unless it ho I for an entertainment connected with the public Fchools, and then Only under tho I direction of the Superintendent." j The Complaining Directors lay stress upon tho point that their solo objoct In making tho criticism was to call attention to a second Hagrant violation of tho Hoard's rules within two months and to icpudiato any responsi bility in connection with the sales of tickets through tho pupils of tho schools. They claim that if a halt is not called tho practice will becomo an abuse which the rulo ailtici latcs. In justice to tho Hoard it should be stated that soveral of them had purchased tickets for tho entertainment before tho question arose, aud judging from tho sentiment that exists all who expect to attend will do like wise. The entertainment will bo a big tlnaneial success, as tho sale of tickets is alieady very large. t PERSONAL. W. W. Mason, of llinghainpton, X.
