The dawn of to-morrow will usher in an other New Year tho day on which another cycle of liopo and labor, of shadow and sun shine, is born. The present year will pass into history as one of tlio mot momentous of all that have preceded it. When its history is written, and tho details of tho progress of events are placed conspicu ously before tho world, it will bo a suhject for boast by all who have lived through it, that rarely have men and women been per mitted to pass through a twelvemonth so unusually eventful. But whatever progress has been mado has been gained chiefly by Individual effort. The masses are but a collection of units. It is to individuals wo must look for tho eleva tion of mankind ; it is to them wo apjieal in the nation's dire need, and to each citizen is given a duty to perform, tho fulilllment or neglect of which has a corresponding efl'ect upon mankind. Many resolves will bo niado to-morrow, and during tho licit twelve months many of them will no doul t bo broken, but an individual resolution to Hvo uprightly and to obey tho precepts of Clod can bo productive of iniidi good if honestly maintained. It is worthy tlio endeavor, no matter how many failures tho past may show. While standing upon tho throshold of '00, and looking over tho events of the pastyoor, tlio peoplo of Schuyl kill county.and especially Shenandoah, have many reasons to bo thank ful to a kind Providence. The peoplo of this conuty have witnessed a revival in business, although porhapsslight ; tho avenues of com merce have given employment to a greater number of working people, and tho financial condition of Schuylkill is in much better shape. Shenandoah 1ms boon ospoelally favored. Duo of tlio most sovoto seasons of drouth experienced in this section of tho country is recorded in 1S03, and its ovil effect was o;.pecially folt lu tho coal region. Manu facturing Industries of all kinds woro com pelled to caneo enerations for a limited time ; collieries suspended work, throwing tbou--tndsof men and boys out of work; railroads wero greatly inconvenienced and canal boats ceased their trips, while in some localities there was lwrdly sufficient water for the actual necessities of lifo. When other towns were suffering from an insufficient supply of the precious liquid, Shenandoah had an abundance, and furnishing enough to keep the wines In operation and its working lieople In employment. The majority of our lieople do not appreciate this fact, but had t ie supply of water been limited to domestic purposes, aud men thrown out of work at tho utiles, they would then have realised tho benefits they enjoyed. Tho resident of Shenandoah can remember the old year with much pleasure becaiihc of many other favors granted them. No serious outbreak of disease is recorded, and the avenues of business aud oominorco havo ex perUluwd a somewhat revival and activity. Jt is true the Grim lleaper has visited our midst and removed l niinibor of prominent and valued resldoiits, but tho mortality rale doos not exceed tlio nvomgo. In a retrospective vlow of tlio dying your, wo an truly enter upon tho now with few ro Krets for the lt, and rosolvo that eneh will live n more Just, kindly, puro tuid charitnblo life. It Is always worth wlillo to do ono's Lost, mid nn honest ofTort Is ncvor wasted. If we so resolve our town will ho all tlio hotter, and as Individuals ours will ho tho reward. PITHY POINTS. The storm that visited this section hist night was ono of tho severest of many months, but aside from tho flooding of a few collieries no damage was douo. To tho con trary it had a very beneficial effect upon tho streets of the town aud left them as clean this morning as if a largo brigade with brooms and shovels had been at work during tho night. The gales did their work well and left littlo water upon tho streets and pavements, so that when Jack Frost got in his work ho did not niako much ieo to en danger the limbs of pedestrians. Window panes suffered in several parts of the town, hut tho damage did not accumu late in any particular place, although Louis Goldin, tho South Main btrcet clothier, nar rowly escaped a heavy bill of damages. Tho galo loosened one cud of a large swinging sign in front of tho store, which swung in dangerous proximity to tho new show win dows, but fortunately somo ropes became twisted about the sign and prevented it from crushing through the expanse of glass. Tho Kllangowan colliery was flooded last night and operations could not bo resumed this morning. The Maple Hill colliery was in a similar condition and the mine remained idlo to-day. Tho Kchley Ifun colliery was also rendered idlo by tbo same cause, as were also tho Wm.
