A IJoy Dies From liijtirics ltocelvcd In In dian Kldgo Jlreaker. William Lewis, Jr., 10-ycar-old son of Will iam Lewis, an aged miner residing on South Bowers street, died last night from frightful iujuries received in tho breaker of the Indian Ridgo colliery yesterday afternoon. Although tho boy was terribly mangled he survived for about four hours. Ho failed to rally from tho shock. Drs. .1. S, Kistlcr and G. M. Hamilton wore called to attend tho boy as soon as ho was removed to his homo, but they pronounced the case a hopeless ono and said there was nothing to bo dono but make tho victim as comfortable as possiblo under the circumstances until death should relieve him. Young Lewis was employed as ovorsCor of tho small rollers located in the middle of tho breaker. Tho place is very dark and the boy worked witli a light. A set of rollers became stalled and, in acenrdanco witli his duty, Lewis cleaned them out and the machinery wns again bet in motion. Lewis went to another place and it is believed that on his return he stepped into tho opening above tho rollers. They aro covered by a sheet iron box having u door in the top. It is thought Lewis left the door open when ho left tho placo after the niachiucry was set in motion again. Tho agonizing cries of tho victim at tracted the attention of men in other parts of the breaker and they signalled the engi neer, who promptly stopped tho machinery, but not until tho unfortunate boy's left leg had been drawn through tho rollers up to tho hip joint. The limb was frightfully mangled and the pelvis and hip bonos wero also horribly crushed. Lewis was removed from the placo to tho engine house ot tho colliery until an am bulance could bo secured, when ho was re moved to tho home of his greatly distressed parents. Notwithstanding tho teiriblo naturo of his injuries the boy remained conscious almost up to the moment that ho passed away. Much sympathy is expressed for tho father of the deceased. Ho is a very old man who is incapacitated forlaboron account of miners' asthma, and tho boy was ono of tho main supports of tho family. There aro two other sons, one older than tho deceased.
