Little IIock, Oct. 18. Tho clihncoa for it mooting nt Hot Springs 011 Oct. 31 be tween Corbett nnd Vltzslntmons npiieftr to bo much brighter toilny thun ut nny tlmo during tho past few days. Indeed, It would now ioem that the Only obatnelo In tho way of tho men meeting In a glovo contest Is Fltzslmmona' expressed deter mination not to agree to tho revised ar ticles. Governor Clnrke returned from Hot Springs yesterday. Ills conference with tho citizens' commlttoo certainly made an lmprosalon on the governor, but what tho lmprefislon Is no ono knows, and tho gov ernor himself stoutly refusos to say any thing on tho subject. When questioned In regard to IiIr visit to Hot Springs tho governor merely said he had gono over there In response to a telegram from Brig adier General Taylor, and that ho had been present at a meeting of tho citizens' Com mittee and others lntorosted, whon thoul ject of prlzo tights, boxing matches and kindred sports was discussed. The gov ernor declined to say whether the discus sion had caused him to discern tho differ ence botweoji a prlzo fight to a finish and ft limited round contest with soft gloves. All that ho would say was that his detor mlnntlou remained unchanged. When asked If ho was Willing to let the courts settle tho matter tho governor said that ho was not roiuly to say, that a gov ernor could not afford to go on record as antagonizing the judiciary of tho state, nnd that it was best to say nothing on tho subject. Thb faot that Corbett was ar restod on a warrant sworn out by Stato's Attorney Teague soon after tho governor's visit to tho Springs brings many people to bellevo that Governor Clarke has decided to let tho courts settle tho wholo matter. Should Corbett be roloased on a writ of habeas corpus, of which thero sooins Uttlo doubt, It Is Lelloved that thero will bo no further Interference on tho part of tho governor, since tho granting of tho writ would in effect bb a judicial declaration that boxing In Arkansas is not u violation of the law. On tho other hnml, however, should' Governor Clarke still adhero to his deter mination to stop tho coutost at any cost, under authority of tho riot act, ignoring tho writ of habeas corpus, then tho judic iary nnd oxocutlvo will como in direct con flict, and troublo of a serious nature might occur. This, however, now seems improb able, ns it is known beyond a doubt that Brigadier Genonil Taylor personally Is far from entertaining tho warlike view of tho situation tlint his recent Interviews would seem to indicato, and whllo ho would, of course, do his duty woro ho called upon, his personal feelings in tho matter should not bo overlooked In sizing up tho situa tion. General Taylor Is said to liavo used his influeuco while at Hot Springs with Gov ernor Clarke In persuading tliu governor that a boxing match is not to bo regarded as a prize light. The general Is said to bo an admirer of tho manly art himself, and formerly Intended witnessing tho bout be tween the heavyweights. As an indication of General Taylor's feeling in tho present matter Is a fact vouchsafed for by Gover nor Clarko himself that tho brigadier gen eral has had himself photographed at Hot j Springs with Champion James J. Corbett I on ono sldo and Mauuger William A, Brady on tho other. It would seem from looking over tho sit uation today that tho courts will settle tho wholo matter, and that no troublo will oc cur. The people in charge of the contest have deeli' red their intention of abiding by tho law, and if tho writ of habeas cor pus in Corliett's caso bo refused tho con test will likely bo declared off. If it bo grunted, tho contest will tako placo. The warrant against James J. Corbett was issued from Justice Kirk's court at 2 o'clock yesterday afternoon. It charged that he lias threatened, Is conspiring and is about to commit an unlawful assault upon tho person of ono Bob Fitzslmmons. It was placed in tho hands of Sheriff Houpt, .who proceeded to the Arlington hotel and served it. Tho warrant was is sued at tho lnstuuco of Profccutlng At torney C. V. Teuguo. Corbett was brought In tho court by tho sheriff, und the prose cuting attornoy asked that lie bo put under bond to keep tho peaoo. Judge Kirk mado tho order, as asked, placing tho bond at 810,000. Corbett refused to glvo tho bond and his attorneys, Martin & Graves, through Mr. Martin, has sued out a writ of habeas corpus before Chouccllor Loath onnan, asking for his releaso. Tills will bring tho quostion up for judi cial hearing as to whether a glovo contest such as Is now proposed will bo a viola tion of tho state statutes. If tho court de cides that It Is not It is believed that tho state authorities will respect tho decision, but if to the contrury It Is thought tho wholo matter will bo abandoned.
