Water is now the leading topic In town anil In nil quarters people are discussing the possibilities of the new plant aud tho probable effect of the Borough Council's action In cutting down tho water rates to half the figures charged by the old water company. As thus far canvassed the peo ple of tho town seem to approve everything Council did at its last meeting and there Is little doubt that the first year's duplicate will contain fully as many names as Council anticipate. There Is speculation as to whether the old water compatiy will reduce rates to meet or heat the cut made by Council, but with tho speculation there is a prevailing sentiment in favor of tho public water works. Beveral prominent citizens were, heard remarking last night that no cutting1' the water company may do will hurt the borough's duplicate. One gentleman said, "There is something that will work in favor of the public water works indepen dent of the question of revenue and rates. I am not prepared to say what it is at present, but keep your ears open and you will soon hear what it is." The first to swear allegiance to the pub- lio water works are the people of Turkey Ituu. Yesterday Superlnten dout Betterldge, Ex-Counciltnau Gallagher and some workmen went up to tho patch to make connections so that the peo ple could get the long looked for relief. Tho actions of the people showed that the resolution of Council requiring tho super intendent to enforce advance payment of water rent was superfluous, bo far as that part of tho town is concerned. As soon as the superintendent mado his appearance the people ran to him in a mob with qua ters in their hands to pay the first mouth's rent. If Turkey Eun had a band it would have been out yesterday. It was a gala day for the patch.as it marked tho abandonment of trips to Maple Hill with barrels, wash boilers and other receptacles for water. People who own property In that section are also jubilant, as the introduction of water in that section will undoubtedly enhance the value of their holdings. Three hydrants have been located lu the place for the present. Others will be located as soon as tho contract for making all connections is awarded, The Turkey Eun people have an excellent force of- water, Among the first arrivals at one of the hydrants was a small boy with a big tin bucket. Ex-Councilman Gallagher turned the water on. It shot into the bucket like a bullet from a rifle and the people stand ing near were covered with spray. "Gee whiz I" exclaimed the small boy, "we'll have to tie tho bottoms to tho buckets." The second of tho loyalists to the public water works is the Phoenix Hose Com pany. The contractor who is to build the company's new bulldlug will begin work next Monday aud steps were taken last night to mako the water connections, which must be attended to at once. Mr. F. J. Brenuau applied to Councilman Gable, chairman of the water committee, and received from him a permit to connect the property with the public water works. The Company is to do the work at Its own expense in order to do away with the delay that will attend tho awarding of the contract for the general work. Apropos the consideration of water in this town at this time comes the announce ment that the IIekald'S recent article concerning a project to connect GIrardvllle with the publlo water works of this town proved a chaser. Capt. IS, C. Wagner, the representative of the Girard Estate at GIrardvllle, heard of the project and at once took steps to improve the water supply of that borough. "Water was turned on from a socond of the Itaveu Run reser voirs and tho supply has slnco been muoh better, so that It is quite likely that the project will be dropped. Chief of I'ollco Tosh, Policemen Leo and Hand and Special Officer Martin Mullahey raided, the house of Alex Semlauls, the saloonkeeper, at the south, west cprner of Centre street aud Pear alley, at about 10:30 o'clook last night. It Is said that yesterday residents of the vicinity complained of the place as a nuisance aud Chief Tosh detailed Police men Lee and Hand to do detective work In citizens clothes In the vicinity of the place, Shortly before the raid was made tho attention of the pollco was attracted by a great noise on the second floor of the house. Chief Tosh was called aud ho and Mullahey entered the front entranco to the saloon. Lee nnd Hand went In tho Pear alley entrance and subsequently Lee and Mullahy ascended the narrow stairway to the second floor. They found a door locked and demanded admittance, which was at first refused, but the proprietor opened the door after engaging in some discussion. Upon entering tho room the pollco found nnd arrested Mrs. Mary Fritz, of East Coal street, and six Polish men. Tho prisoners wero marohe,d to the lockup, Seiniauis followed them nnd raised a fuss in the lockup, hut was ejected. A short time nfter a second report of disorder was received from tho vicinity of the raided place. Chief Tosh wont back to the saloon and Semlauls came out. He was in au ugly mood aud addressed foul language to the officer. Tosh admonished the saloonkeeper to behave himself, but he failed to do so and Tosh took the man to the lockup. Later In the night all the parties wore arraigned before Chief Burgess Burns. Tho women aud all but one of the men paid flues aud costs aud were discharged.
