A young man has been paying attentions to her for some time and the friends of both parties had for some time looked upon a matrimonial alliance as u foregone conclusion. Last week it was agreed that the ban would be announced In the Greek Catholic church yesterday morning. The young woman was in attendance with her brother and a num ber of friends and arrangements had been made for the wedding ceremony to take place last night. The astonishment and distress of the unfortunate young woman may easily bo imagined when, at Nothing changes the appearance of a room to greater the appointed hour, the priest announced . .... He said the only relief they could get was through an action for damages for breach of promise, but as the faithless swain had no property a suit would be waste of time. He also reasoned that the young woman should feel rejoiced that she had not married the deceitful swain This view was also taken by the law seekers and they left the office with their minds made up to make the best of a bad bargain. 21 NORTH MAIN STREET, SHENANDOAH, PA. Imeii The Railway Accident. Editou Evening Herald : -Friday evening I read an account of the electric railway accident in your paper nnd wish to make a statement. I was on my way to Mahanoy City with a large load of furniture and when I got to the company housis below Bridge street I saw the car coming, and I at once crossed the tracks, I drove my horses to get to the broadest part of the street, but before I could get there the car was close to me. My team tried, of course, to get out of the road from the car; no It was coming at a rate much exceeding four miles an hour, and when they could not turn to the left on account of there being no room, and they turned as quick as a flash upon the track. Before I could get them from the track the car caught the polo of the wagon, knocking the righthand horse down and turned wagon, horses and all around before the car stopped. William Hehn is laid up in bed and I was knocked frbm the waeon. senseless, but wits not hurt. The one horse was cut a great deal but no deep wounds. If the motorman had reduced ths rate of his car it would not have happened. George F. Wimak. Shenandoah, Pa., April 20, 1895. Strouse for broaohes. Fresh Lemons 2 dozen for 25c. Constant oozing of filth at the corner of Oak strait and Pear alley caused the street at thaVplace to become In very bad condition and on Saturday Councllmen Dougherty and (Kane decided to take steps to abate the nuisance. The trouble arose from an old private sewer line and the Councllmen were unable to find out who owned the line. Exhaustive I inquiry threw no light on the matter. I The Councllmen hired a man ttu open the street and, alter nndlng tne break, ordered him to plug the pipe. This waB done and within a few hours after the owners of the sewer became known. It was found that tne line was from the Rob bins and Beddall properties on West Centre street. Today negotia tions are pending between the owners of these properties and the owners of the large sewer on West Centre Btreet, with a view to allowing the former to connect with the line. There is a hitch in the negotiations owing to the applicants cou sldering the terms fqr connection too high. The conditions under which the sewer line was laid contain a clause guarding against exorbitant charges for connection and there Is little doubt that all will be well. Messr Robbing and Beddall applied at the last meeting of Council for permission to run a sewer from their properties down Pear alley, but the request was not granted, Council being opposed to multiplicity of private sewerage lines and having decided that where suitable and convenient sewerage can be secured through pipes already laid connections with them must be made. The more the sewerage question Is agitated, the more pronounced becomes the reasoning that joint sewerage movements are cheap at any cost and that all people find this out in time. than ever. The electric fire alarm system had more fun with the people on Saturday, when it was still ont of order. At about one o'clock In the afternoon the bell tolled "one" and set the people thinking. Some thought the bell had been arranged to toll the hour of the day. The firemen were puzzled, because the alarm the bell tolled did not correspond with the number of any box. After some Inquiry all who gave attention to the matter settled with the conclusion that the system had not been repaired. At about half past three o'clock Satur day afternoon the bell again tolled. This time the indicators displayed the figures "3i." and suoooslng the alarm to be a bona fide one, the three fire companlei hastened to the corner of Main and PoDlar streets, where box 31 is located There was considerable swearing when the firemen discovered that there was no Are and that they had again been fooled on account of the alarm system being out of order. The system suspended opera tions yesterday and had not been heard from up to the time of going to press to day. Cor. Main and Lloyd Sis. Beer Brevities.
