On the night of March 31st, last, Charles Dobstris, a Pole, while walking along East Raspberry alley with n fellow conn tryman was suddenly struck up6n the head with a rock in the hands of his com panion and severely beaten while ho lay unconscious upon the ground. At the time It was believed that Dobstris had been fatally injured. He was picked up unconscious, but tecovered sufficiently to be able to walk home. He could not give the name or residence of his assailant, but evidently instituted n still hunt for him, as last night one Joseph Pntchulls whs taken before Justice Toomey, charged with tho assault. The hearing brought out a number of Interesting statements and made the case a perplexing ona for the Justice to con sider. While Patobulis denied that he assaulted Dobstris, or had auything to do with the case, It developed that the men were bitter enemies. Patchulls was ar rested for stealing n watch from Dobstris and served four months in the county jail on conviction. He claius that while he was in jail Dobstris was criminally inti mate with his wife and during the hearing he entered a charge, of adultery against Dobstris. It is said the company will hold the borough responsible and let the bor ough officials deal with the offenders. The secret of the trouble is that some peo ple are hauling to the place refuse that should be hauled n(greater distance, but to try anu cover ineir iracKs they dump the refuse Into the breaches. The only remedy the borough has Is to keep a strict watch for these people and when they nro caught apply the law to the full extent One or two earnest prosecutions will make nu improvement. The Borough Council will hold an ad, jourued meeting tonight to consider an ordinance which the Borough Solicitor has prepared for tho government of the public water works. The ordinance Is a very lengthy one, consisting of over forty sections. As soon as it 1b ndopted and is published it will be in order to elect a uperintendent of the water works. This will ue un important matter ana will no doubt nttract considerable attention. The office is a very important one and the candidates for it are quite numerous. The arrangements for the local baBe ball season of 1893 still hangs fire and it Is still uncertain whether the Lnkes'de Electric Railway Company will have any connection with the club. Some people who seem well informed say the company will be very much In the club before the season opens. If such is to be the case it will be necessary for the company to stir Itself. Manager Brennan says it the deal falls through the games will be played on the old grounds, which will be very much improved. The players signed for the club are to report here on the 15th Inst, There Is no doubt that tho club will be the strongest the town has ever had. All the collieries of the P. & R. C. & I. Co. are working today and will also be operated tomorrow, but no statement can be made for the balance of the week. Some of the officials say that the mines may be operated on Friday and Saturday, but it is not likely. The Reading Rail road Company handled an Immense ton nage of anthracite cosl last month, According to the monthly statement of shipments, with three days estimated, the total for the month was no lesa than 1,220,395 tons, which Is on a basis of 14,- tH4,74U tons lor tue year. II such an average should hold good for the year the company's tonnage for 1695 would show an Increase of no less than 4,282,296 tons. This, however, is not at all prob able, though the figures for March, which show an increase over the same month last year of 303,858 tons furnish a good illustration of the anthracite coal busi ness which the company did in that month. Considerable complaint Is being made about the muddy condition of the streets, and with Just cause, too. Supervisor McGulre is alive to the situation and now that the rain has stopped he will begin the work of doing away with some of the mud. Tomorrow morning he will put large gangs of men at work on Main aud Centre streets to get the mud in piles and the following day will put the teams at work. "All hands, fetch your shovels.'
